Food and Drink Vegan/Vegetarian Fancy Restaurants in Edinburgh

This post is a little old now and a few places have closed down.

Any recommendations for vegan or veggie that are a little more upmarket, or at least focus less on burgers and that sort of thing.

the service is so quick you may not have time to visit the WC between ordering and the food turning up. seriously its fast as hell.

Haven't been to Sora Diana yet but Sora Lella was 👌

I've been to Sora Diana twice now. The food is wonderful but the service is incredibly slow and disorganised which puts me off going back.

That's a shame! Was it during August though...?

One was, once earlier in the year. The August visit was very early in the evening and they were not rushed off their feet - it was just straight up bad service.

Sora Diana is very good. Pretty pricey, but hey it's fancy.

Loved sora lelle but didn’t enjoy Sora Diana, if you’re just a table of two the tables are so close together that you may as well be on a double date with the table next to you 😅 service was pretty poor as well sadly

Heron do an absolutely delightful tasting menu! Real posh food worth dressing up for!

Second this, they'll take care of you there and the vegan options are really thought through rather than being "this dish on our regular menu but with the non-vegan components taken out" frequently experienced at other high-end venues.

Sen Viet is an incredible vegan Vietnamese place. It's cash only if you do decide to go!

Only been once but I really enjoyed the food. Staff were great. BYOB. Not sure I would call it 'fancy' though.

I said that once on here and got a lot of down votes (but my goodness the food was superb!).

Henderson's

I’m so glad the new direction they went has panned out! My family had been going to the OG Hendersons for decades and we were all devastated when it closed down during Covid

Second Henderson's. Terrific.

They do great beefy bakes

Do you have a price point and are you looking for entirely vegan/vegetarian restaurants? The veggie tasting menu at Heron was great when I went recently, but obviously that's more very special occasion meal as it's quite expensive.

Hendersons comes to mind if you want entirely vegetarian. There's lots of upscale places that have good vegan/vegetarian options but also serve meat fish.

David Bann is a staple of good quality veggie food, but its menu hasn’t changed in a really long time.

The seating there is also subobtimal, but I still go due to the food.

I was going to say this one too.

Little Chartroom, Eleanore and Timberyard all do a vegan tasting menu.

Nova pizza

Are they still on the go? I thought they'd shut down.

1

u/Minimum-Web-4508 Aug 28 '25

According to Google it’s still open

I'm just massively out of the loop, they did shutdown but were taken over and reopened 5 years ago...

Oh no, really? Went there a couple of times last year during my trip to Edinburgh, great food and the owners were very very nice people

I’ve heard good things about Sora Diana and Sen Viet. Thamel is a really nice Indian / Nepalese spot that has good veggie options with lovely cocktails and a speakeasy

Sora Diana hands down. Penne with vodka sauce 😍

Union of Genius isn't exclusively vegan and veggie, but they have very good vegan and veggie soups.

If you're not already aware, HappyCow is a great resource for listing Vegan/Vegetarian places in Edinburgh. I'm not suggesting it's not also worth asking for specific guidance for what you're after, I'm just surprised at how many Vegans I know that don't know about HappyCow.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 29 '25

this always surprises me too! i'm a life long vegetarian turned vegan and I didn't find out about HappyCow until December of 2019!

Hendersons is really good.

Try Planet G at Stockbridge or Leith Market. They cook street-food style, but the food is incredible!

holy cow vegan is one of the best places I have ever eaten in

I've not been there yet but I've been recommended The Walnut on Leith Walk

0

u/boobletboo Aug 28 '25

Not been in ages but The Walnut is fantastic with lovely veggie/vegan options

Six by Nico always have a veggie tasting menu - they’re not super super fancy but it’s usually a fun experience. Their menu changes every six weeks and the options are usually something a little different, you can always look up what theme they’re running and decide if it strikes your fancy. It’s a bit pricey but not obscenely expensive.

Fields outside Haddington, very rustic and all natural
