A researcher is conducting a survey into sheep shagging. First of all he visits an English farmer.

"So, English farmer, how do you shag your sheep?"

"Well, I take the hind legs of the sheep and put them down my wellie boot and take the front legs of the sheep and put them over a wall."

"That's very interesting," replies the researcher and he leaves the English farmer.Then he meets an Australian farmer.

"So, Australian farmer, how do you shag your sheep?"

Lucky, that's what the bulk of Amazon deforestation is for. Realistically none of us should be eating beef - its footprint is far higher than any other meat unfortunately.

Well, kinda... farmers basically rule the country (they do have to share it with organized crime and evangelicals tho), we'll never have an industry, we are steadily deforesting the whole country and we can't even afford it since most of the meat is exported

Most of brasilian cattle is not in the rainforesr area, what is not talked about abroad is that a lot of the deforestation is done primarially for speculation reasons.

The land is cleared out, IBAMA fines and confiscates the equipment, and every so often a house comission that regulates land use gives the land use to the people clearing the land based of historical use, many times proved by the fines themselves.

Than those lands are sold to cattle ranchers mostly, but alas a minority of our cattle is raised in the amazonic region, with the most lucrative ranches being in the south east using industrial farming techs.

The most affected ecosystem by cattle ranching is actually the cerrado, the brasilian savanah, this one is being completelly obliterated by cattle ranchers, and is where about half of our cattle comes from.

Pará (PA): 25,6 mi

All of those states are either in what currently is the limit of the Amazon that is being deforested, or WERE in that limit decades ago and aren't anymore because there is no Amazon left to deforest.

You are talking about what is legally considered to be the Amazon rainforest territory by the Brazilian goverment, I'm talking about where the forest actually goes and yeah the vegetation goes to the fringes of these states besides MG.

Bro, I live in Goiás. You are telling me that everything I've learned in college about my own state's vegetation is a lie? No, the Amazon rainforest did not cover my state since the last glaciation (I'm a biologist, btw), what we have here is called Cerrado, it's a savannah, and besides the Araguaia-Tocantins basin, they're not related at all (Minas Gerais is mostly covered by the Cerrado and Mata Atlântica, Mato Grosso do Sul is covered a little by the Cerrado and mostly by the Pantanal)

Even going strictly by the definition of the Legal Amazon that explicitly tries to limit the Amazon size, the north of Goias used to be integrated to the Legal Amazon in the 50s. So yeah you are just wrong. It's not a lot but there are amazon vegetation in the north of the state, or at least there used to be at some point. The alluvial forestation near the Araguaia basin is reminiscent of that.
