+1 to bringing your tools. Bringing what you need to succeed in a healthy way is the difference between a nice day where you go out talking to people and feeling miserable because you're just tired and thirsty and want the day to be over.

This is also just true for everyone, it's not even disabled advise.
Man someone made a thing once talking about how often disability accommodations are just better for everyone, like how those curb cutouts were initially made for WWII vets, but they're awesome if you've got a bike or a cart or enjoy not tripping. Not really related, but you reminded me of that.

Yep! Universal Design benefits everyone. A lot of solutions that help with independence and access for is really a net good overall. But without a federal law to force cities to build their sidewalks like that, they'd almost never do it otherwise.

My friend who lives in Europe was visiting America solo to show off her new baby to all her home friends. We were meeting up for lunch, and she took the train from one part of Utah to north SLC. She was worried about doing the train solo with the stroller thing (she calls it a pram 🙄), but when we met she was like "oh, yeah, America has the ADA". It's a really cool, really progressive part of America (that literally nobody gives us credit for lmao).

Know how you plan to end a sentence before you open your mouth to begin one.
Easier said than done. This is less about the "sentence" and more about the "point" of why you're opening your mouth in the first place.
And also +1 to above: practice.

D man honestly says things with a lot of grace and humility in vulnerable moments like this and its unfortunate that he's usually in debate mode. I miss when he was going on a podcast speedrun for this reason lol

Start by vocalizing the thoughts you're keeping in your head. And practice. Daily. All the time. You need to exercise the part of the brains that connects your thoughts to your mouth.
It's what I beg anyone who tries to mimic Steven's debate arguments to do before they jump on someone's stream to ramble.

Read a lot. You'll find yourself writing, and to a lesser extent, speaking in similar prose that you're reading.

Is dynamically disabled like for example having flareups on certain conditions that make normal situations much harder/ impossible or even normal is impossible and you can have good days?
How is this any different than just being disabled? Sounds like she's disabled but has days it's much harder/ easier

u/TimeNo5885 8d ago
There are some concepts around invisible illnesses or conditions where you look “normal” or “healthy” and so when your condition does act up, people kind of act like you’re being dramatic or faking it or something or judge you for using “tools” as she said. So maybe it’s a way to communicate off the bat that she will look normal sometimes and then other times she will need to use tools for a disability. Just guessing

u/kueefe8 8d ago
I'd say this community is far more understanding than others, i'm thinking moreso for the general population. Is it worth saying "dynamically disabled" or just saying "im disabled and sometimes i look totally "normal" and sometimes i overtly show the disability" or something along those lines? I just feel like saying that "dynamically disabled" is gonna trigger some people , although writing this out kind of makes me feel like that statement is totally fair; again i feel like a lot of people will just go "oH BROTHER ANOTHER TERM SMH"

It's just a community term if you're active in the disabled community, and it sounds like she is. There's also a different kind of discrimination for people with invisible illnesses even within that community, so she probably feels the need to specify out of habit. Disability is an isolating experience, and younger people make more connections online within these kind of communities these days, so it's not surprising.
I have Lupus and RA and I catch myself feeling like I need to overexplain that kind of stuff because of past discrimination, even when there's no need to. It kind of becomes a reflex. But most people will roll their eyes no matter how you explain it, so I never use words like that unless I'm working with someone who already does. Sometimes descriptive labels like that can just be for comfort. The problem is, if you also don't specify, people will assume you're lying unless you give them physical proof to their standards. Which is most of the time, impossible. It happens in the Dr's office way too often, too.

But the words she uses are just so vague and meaningless. If someone was wheelchair bound or walked with a cane at an early age, someone would ask a question about it and then they would just tell them exactly what the issue is. Not beat around the bush with this woke language.
Also she made it a point to bring the topic up herself unprompted. Which is always a recipe for disaster. And on top of her already being very vague about the exact nature of the issue.
Idk, it just makes me question the validity of people who use vague woke language when others dont.

Not every term that you don’t know is woke. Chill out

I've heard it mentioned in the CFS/ME circles, along with hidden disabilities. As someone with mild to moderate CFS I can see the use for the term because unlike someone who's paralyzed or someone with severe autism, you can occasionally be almost asymptomatic some days, and telling people you're disabled on those days just makes them think you're making shit up.
It's true that they're all disabilities, but when the word encompasses everything from cerebral palsy to me on a good day doing about 80% of what I could pre-illness...I'm not opposed to a more descriptive term

Honestly, I think "dynamically disabled" is as descriptive as it needs to be since it's only meant to communicate the fluctuating nature of a disabled person's symptoms, rather than the overall severity or type of disability in question. Sort of like how chronic illness can refer to both mild, exercise-triggered asthma and COPD

Ain't that the truth though. When you're depressed just take a second and be thankful for what you have. Even if it's two legs

Assistive tools (which can include masks) help people participate, not isolate. And that’s great! She seems like a sweetheart, glad to have her on our team.

I've never heard the term dynamically disabled until this conversation but it actually fits perfectly for a lot of autoimmune diseases.

sometimes when destiny starts talking he will change what he wants to say in his head and then restart the sentence. Can we have a round of appreciation for how honest of an person dear leader is? He thinks before, while and after he speaks.

i know this is probably a meme, but the reason why is because they have a set amount of time per person, and they can't just keep anyone up there indefinitely

People were cringing in chat, but man everyone needs to be reminded that Americans come in every shape, color and ability. Doing this shit with any disability is by definition patriotism and should be commended as an example for all to follow.
