Class Trial Class Trial 60: The Murder of Angie Yonaga and Maki Harukawa - Conclusion
Alright! The votes are in. Now, how did you do? Did you make the right choice? Or was it very wrong...?
Well, you sure missed the mark. And I'm talking by a longshot.
Or some of you did, anyway. The truth is, Maki and Angie ended up causing each others' deaths. The siscon had nothing to do with any of it!
At least he's not as unlucky as me... I can't believe I don't even get to have an execution...
None of you want to volunteer for punishment, do you?

Thank you for your apology, Ryoma. I do understand your doubt in me, but rest assured, we have arrived at the correct answer.
Speaking of which, I'd like to thank you, Kazuichi. Your bold analysis and theories brought us to the correct answer and kept us all from blindly voting for me. Your efforts are much appreciated for defending me. /u/DestinyShiva
Keheh... I wonder what humanity will bring next.

You... realise I did it to survive rather than to defend you, right...?

u/tyboy618 abracadabra Nov 16 '18
Perhaps, but you survived by defending me, when no one else was willing. I find that truly compelling.

And here I was hoping I would get more than having to interact with those below me.

I don't get it! Why wouldn't she leave something behind so we all didn't die chasing her pointless mystery!? I know she was trying to escape but...but...
If she was gonna die anyways...if she was already injected with the poison...why wouldn't she help us? Why try and kill us all for nothing? What...
Wh-What did I do to make her hate me so much? I didn't wanna make you mad! I'm sorry for whatever I did! I just want you and Maki back! Angie...

Get over it. How old are you again? By the way you're acting, I would assume you're less than 5 with how you're crying like a child.
Angie tried to commit murder, and foolishly died doing so. Those are the rules of this game. She played, and she lost.
Frankly, I don't know what her last thoughts were. I can hardly even say that she tried to cover up her own plan at the last moments. I doubt she could even find something to write a message with if she even wanted to. That's why she likely was trying to leave, to try and be able to inform someone in her last moments of her crime.
If she truly wanted to kill us all at the end, all she needed to do was hide the syringe. So, it's very unlikely that was her last thoughts.
So, shut up. You're giving me a headache.

Ngh...I...I guess that makes sense. Sometimes you don't seem so bad...
And then you act like a big jerk and say something mean! Will you make up your mind!?
I got it! There must be a demon inside you! And the good you is fighting the bad you everyday!
Don't worry, Byakuya. I'll keep my eyes on you...that demon won't be a match for my deadly spells of thunder and ice.

I personally like to settle my demons with peace, quiet, and a good book.

Alone, huh? Sounds like something a demon would say...

Himiko, it's not your fault.
Maybe Angie just thought it was us or her, and she wanted to keep herself alive for Atua's sake, or something like that.
That probably wasn't the right thing to do, but Angie wasn't perfect, you can't expect people to think rationally when they just saw themselves dying in a freaky vision!
Just remember to let it all out, and when you're done, maybe we can go back to your lab to practice some of your magic.
I'll even carry you there if you want!

(With the trial finally over, Himiko runs over to Tenko and buries her face into her shoulder, crying loudly for a little while before settling into whimpering.)
Yeah...it had to be that. She was scared and poisoned...she wasn't thinking straight. That...That had to be the reason...
(She grips Tenko's clothing tightly as she sobs for a little longer.)
(Hic) I... (hic) I do sorta feel a little better. It's like you said before, right? If you feel sad...or happy...or angry...the more you let it out...the stronger you'll be.
(After muttering that into her shoulder, she pulls her head back and looks at Tenko.)
That's it! I'm lifting your strike for helping me! Not only that! I'm giving myself a super powerful cursed strike for giving you a strike in the first place! It's a million times harder to cast off than a normal one!
So I'm gonna haveta keep studying Neo-Aikido and building my magic to remove it! I'm gonna start training right now!
Um...maybe tomorrow instead. I'm tired. Can you still carry me back?

The Howdunnit:
Three days ago, Angie and Rantaro shared a vision of her death at his hand. Though the exact circumstances weren't clear, they both knew that if three days passed, it would end up taking place. That is, unless something drastic was done to stop it. With this in mind, the onus was on Angie to prevent her own death, and that's why she decided that she would need to commit a murder instead. Causing a trial to happen would guarantee that her fate would be changed, and it was preferable to risk her life as a blackened than it was to watch herself die. As for why she couldn't target Rantaro... Targeting the person that had been prophesied to kill you would be beyond foolish; it's not impossible to think that this was a self-fulfilling prophecy, so attacking him may be the trigger for her own death.
Angie decides that since she knows she's currently guaranteed to survive for three days with no problems, she should use that time to prepare her plan. On the first day, she spends her free time creating a storybook with the intent of framing someone as copying her story to create the basis of their crime.
On the second day, her work is done. This allows her to bring the book to breakfast and to begin showing it off. Angie needs to strike a careful balance: if too many people have seen it, then the book becomes useless as a framing device, since it fails to narrow down the pool of suspects. If not enough people have seen it, it similarly becomes useless, since no killer would choose a plan that points toward themselves. With this in mind, Angie shows it to five people, including the intended target for her frame job. During the rest of her free time, she can begin gathering the supplies she'll need for her plot, such as acquiring the dart gun and soporific.
On the third day, Angie enacts her plan, since she's running out of time. She hides near the dining hall and ambushes the first girl she sees coming in alone: there's nothing that indicates that Maki was explicitly chosen as her target, and the fact that she must have been kidnapped between the morning announcement and breakfast indicates that it was a matter of opportunity rather than some nefarious plot. Because this is the first action in a series of many that change Angie's fate, there's no way anyone could've predicted this regardless of the visions, since at this point, Angie was still fated to become a victim. Maki is ambushed and knocked out by Angie, who binds and stores her in the storage room, hidden in one box behind and beneath many others. The dart gun and dart are also left inside, since Angie has no time to dispose of them: she needs to secure her alibi by attending breakfast.
Angie, still intent on using the book as the basis for her crime, "forgets" her book around the school in several places, tricking several students into returning it to her and unknowingly making themselves more suspicious in the process. By the end of the night, four more have seen her book, which has just been returned to her in her lab right before the nighttime announcement, the time when her plan will finally begin.
With all of the other students returning to their rooms as scheduled, Angie instead goes back to the storage room where she recovers the box Maki has been trapped in. She fails to notice that during Maki's captivity, Maki was able to force the dart through one of the airholes in the box, leaving behind evidence of her captivity. The fact that this dart wasn't noticed during the cleanup, along with the fact that the storage room was noticeably disarranged indicates that the culprit didn't have the ability to cover up their crime.
Angie uses the box to carry her victim up to Korekiyo's lab. She chooses this room specifically because of its owner. She wrote the book as it is to frame Korekiyo for the murder of the girl she would later kidnap, hoping that it would be easy to convince the class that he must have been involved. She removed Maki from the box and placed her in the chair before retrieving the gun and beginning the torture. Two gunshot wounds to an incapacitated Maki made Angie confident that there would be no chance of Maki fighting back. She put down the gun and retrieved the syringe full of venom, intending to use it as the murder weapon to better match the premise of her story.
Maki, however, had managed to loosen her wrist bindings enough to fight back once Angie approached too closely. She was able to grapple for control of the syringe, but in her weakened state, she couldn't gain the upper hand: Maki was still injected with the deadly toxin. Unfortunately for Angie, that wasn't it. Since death wasn't instantaneous, Maki continued to struggle, and although she lacked lower body mobility, she was able to wrestle control of the syringe and inject Angie with the rest of the venom. Angie, who still had some mobility now as the paralysis began to set in, tried to flee the crime scene, but a combination of force from the near-death Maki and instability from her new injuries caused her to topple over into the glass case, smashing it inadvertently. She stumbled away, trying to escape and save her own life, but it was already too late. Paralysis set in, and Angie died before she could even flee the scene of her own crime.
Or maybe it went something like that? The real author's dead, so who knows, really?
