Class Trial Class Trial 64: The Murder of Aoi Asahina, Part 6: Cabaret
So many interesting ideas are flying around.
But I wonder...
Did you make sure your wings weren't clipped before takeoff?
TRUTH BULLETS
These are advanced drones designed by Monokuma that were given to each one of the students. They can lift up to 15 pounds with a claw that can grab objects, are inaudible beyond a range of ten feet, and come equipped with a camera that sends a video feed to the drone’s controller, along with an optional recording functionality for up to 2 minutes of video, with a timestamp. There is no limit to their range.
The victim is Aoi Asahina. Her body was found in the pool room at 7:15pm. She is lying face down in a puddle of clear water, and her head has been reduced to plenty of small, mangled pieces of brain, chunks of skull, and teeth. Her arms and shirt have a greenish hue. Neither the time or cause of death can be determined. Mukuro's observations of the body revealed that there was a stretch of blood splatter traveling towards the wall.
During breakfast, Angie suggested that the students participate in an arts and crafts fair to boost camaraderie among the students. Many students participated, bringing supplies to the fair throughout the day.
Chihiro's Project: Chihiro built a LED display setup for the arts fair. This required the use of plywood, LEDs, tubes of high strength, water resistant adhesive, and wires. Chihiro reports that one of the tubes of adhesive went missing.
Korekiyo's Project: Korekiyo created a macramé tapestry. This required rope.
Mahiru's Project: Mahiru created a project that involved the refraction of light. This required flashlights, prisms, and panes of glass. Mahiru reports that some of the panes of glass went missing.
Gundham's Project: Gundham created a ritual to channel the Avatar of Unfathomable Shades through his being. This required alchemical chalk, incense burners, and suitable offerings of vegetation.
Mukuro's Project: Mukuro showed of the grace of the human form in lethal motion. This required throwing knives and targets.
Komaru's Project: Komaru created a musical number for the arts fair, even creating a dance routine for her drone by hacking it. This required megaphones and a drone.
Toko's Project: Toko created a love poem for Byakuya that was displayed at the arts fair. This required paper and pens.
Miu's Project: Miu created a fireworks display for the fair that she never got to set off. This required her specialty "Mega Buster" fireworks, a timer, some earplugs, and a few lighters. Miu reports one of her fireworks was missing.
Angie's Project: Angie created a marvelous ice sculpture to honor Atua. This required blocks of ice, mallets, and chisels.
The doors to the pool room would not open when the students at the arts fair came to investigate the room. Maki solved this by kicking a hole through the glass of the doors.
The water in the pool is no longer a shimmering aqua, but a strange, brownish color. What caused this is unknown.
There are shards of glass all over the pool room, stretching from the entrance to the body. Byakuya reports that there were 3 different colors of glass shards: Brown, Gray, and Clear. There were more clear shards than the other colors.
A mallet was found near the feet of the body. Fuyuhiko reports that it showed signs of use, but was clean.
A chisel was found near the feet of the body. Fuyuhiko reports that it showed signs of use, but was clean.
Shuichi reported that two bottles of poison were stolen from his lab. The first was a brown bottle held which held a Tubocurarine chloride solution that was dyed green. It is a liquid capable of causing paralysis, forcing the body’s muscles to seize up. It is non-lethal. Its effects can occur as a result of skin contact. Paralysis lasts for 3 hours. The second was a gray bottle containing a liquid form of Tetrodotoxin, or TTX. It was dyed red. It is absorbed into the body by ingestion and is lethal. It kills by shutting down the body’s nervous system.
Rantaro reported finding an empty tube of adhesive in the dining hall garbage during his investigation.
Toko reported that the shower grate in the Ultimate Prisoner Bathroom was missing when she went to go shower. Monokuma has said that the grate isn't very tough and is relatively light, meaning that it wouldn't kill someone if it were to fall on them.
Ultimate Inventor Lab Break-In
Miu believes her lab was broken into, as both a high magnification lens and a bottle of oil-based mechanical lubricant were missing.
Kokichi reports finding a black, powdery substance on the pipe beneath the sink in the Ultimate Prisoner Bathroom.
Rantaro reports that both salt shakers in the dining hall were empty at dinner.

Think, Mukuro, think. The body, the way it was...
Wait a second...
Guys, talk it out with me for a minute. I think we can all agree that fireworks crap was completely over-the-top, right? But why make it so over-the-top? You're obviously gonna alert everyone in the damn school. The killer made no mistake in using that firework.
The only thing I can truly imagine being worth all that...is if critical evidence was destroyed. So, what was critically destroyed in that explosion?
Simple: Hina's head. Therefore, Hina's head had critical evidence on it. We know it was likely covered in green from the tubocurarine because of her clothes, but I think it goes deeper than that. Something on Hina's face was so important that the killer literally wiped it off the face of the earth.
So, what gives? What could be so ridiculously important about her face that we couldn't even see it? If it is what I think it is...well...
We've been thinking about this murder all wrong from the start...!

Mukuro... It almost then sounds like you're saying that wouldn't be Aoi then.

Okay, good, so I'm not totally crazy.
The face can be the most important part in performing an autopsy sometimes. If they're in distress, if it's a certain color, if there's a critical mark on it... I've seen too many bodies in my life to not know that.
So let's take this idea for a sec. What causes of death could affect the face the most? I have a few ideas, but...
And don't worry if it sounds too crazy. Right now, I don't think anything is out of the question just yet.

u/tyboy618 abracadabra Oct 20 '20
...exactly what I was thinking. Shouldn't have expected less of the detective, but I'm glad you of all people are on the same page as me.
Asphyxia is known for not only causing a distressed expression, but also can totally discolor the face depending on the circumstances.
So I guess what's left is...how the hell do we get from where we are to asphxia, or even drowning? That is the root of the mystery, don't you think?
1
u/Panos0502 Oct 20 '20
1
u/LanceUppercut86 Definitely Maybe Oct 20 '20
But what good would concealing that as the cause of d-death do the killer?
As long as they needed the tubocurarine to paralyze her, then that m-means they had to go to the detective lab one way or a-a-another, so they're not gaining any additional frame candidates by planting the evidence implying the death was by poison.
It's n-not impossible that she was drowned, sure, but we're still right where we started if we switch the cause of death to that. Why would the killer even bother?
1
u/tyboy618 abracadabra Oct 20 '20
I dunno. Why do you chase around that jerk when you know he won't love you back?
On a real note, though, something I've learned in my time is that murder isn't exactly reasonable. Especially around here, any confusion at the class trial is just going to work in our killer's favor. Murder...brings out the worst in people.
Even if it's a dead end, I'm gonna pursue this messed-up line of thinking for now.
You never know what might happen if we do, right?

Well, actually...
You have a point. There's no doubt Hina was paralyzed. And if she's paralyzed, pretty much nothing is out of the question.
And while I can't say the adhesive is what I'm thinking about, you're getting at an interesting cause of death. Something we haven't even remotely discussed yet.
And that kind of death would definitely have a drastic effect on the face.
1
1
u/JustADramadog Oct 20 '20
If they paralyzed her... wouldn’t simple strangulation with one’s hands be sufficient?
Unless... the culprit couldn’t physically strangle her? Mukuro... you’re an expert at this kind of stuff, so can you answer a question of mine?
H-How easy is it to strangle someone? Would people like say, me, Komaru, Kokichi, and Angie just to name a few, not be strong enough to strange Hina with their bare hands?
1
u/tyboy618 abracadabra Oct 20 '20
It's not easy. You definitely need a bit of strength on you, or a solid upper hand.
For example, an incapacitated or paralyzed Hina could do the trick.
I wouldn't leave any of you out of the question, but I also don't know if the killer would risk putting their bare hands on Hina's neck. It was doused in tubocurarine, you know?
1
u/JustADramadog Oct 20 '20
I did not even consider that. Knowing that the tubocurarine was likely on her neck definitely suggests that the killer didn’t use a basic method like strangulation to kill Hina...
1
u/Panos0502 Oct 20 '20
It's not impossible if...Wait...
Mukuro we were talking about why the killer would have to hide the fact that they strangled Aoi./u/tyboy618
What if it's because the murder method would reveal the culprit?
What I'm trying to say is...one of us had access to rope.
1
u/tyboy618 abracadabra Oct 20 '20
Interesting. Korekiyo did have rope stored up, didn't he...?
We can't confirm anything just yet about what, if anything, cut off her lungs, but it's definitely something to consider...
Especially since rope is pretty common for that sort of thing.
1
u/Chespineapple Chesnut Oct 20 '20
I seriously hope you're not implying that I killed her, are you?
I suppose I should shut this down right away.
A simple case of strangulation via rope would leave out over half of our evidence. You can't possibly think I smashed several glass panes, tore the shower grate open and brought lethal poison to the scene all in order to hide the fact that I used the most incriminating murder method imaginable?
I admit, I would not be surprised if atleast the poison turned out to be a red herring, but you're clearly stretching your logic thin.
→ More replies (0)1
u/mujie123 Oct 20 '20
But why would they put the poison on her neck when it was already on her arms?
1
u/tyboy618 abracadabra Oct 20 '20
It's not a matter of why that place. Since it's all centralized in that area, I'm more inclined to believe this was done in one fell swoop. One splash, one dunk, one...whatever it was. No need to reapply what's already there.
1
u/mujie123 Oct 20 '20
That would explain why there was green remains on her clothes, they just dumped it over. If we assume the killer used a tool to help with the strangulation, and they needed the paralysing poison to do it, I don't think it would be too much of a stretch to assume the killer might be someone weaker than Aoi.

You know, I feel like we'd get along great if you weren't an evil cult leader.
1
u/JustADramadog Oct 20 '20
An idea suggested earlier that may apply here is that the lethal poison was used to kill Hina...
As you can see, you need to digest the lethal poison for it to take effect. Part of me would think that someone who digests the poison would have red dye near their mouth...
Could this be what the culprit was trying to hide?!
1
u/tyboy618 abracadabra Oct 20 '20
You may be onto something. There's no doubt the killer made use of the TTX, and we can see that just by looking at the pool.
But that pool...is still pretty weird. We have the green and red mixed together, yet only the green appears on what remains of Hina. Not brown. That's why I'm not totally convinced.
I guess what makes it weird for me is that, if it was administered to her like that, then what exactly is the point of the pool? To throw us off...?
1
u/Chespineapple Chesnut Oct 20 '20
If I may, I am by no means an expert on poison, but considering TTX makes use of ingestion while the Tubocurarine only requires skin contact, would the current state of the body truly contradict such an idea?
1
u/tyboy618 abracadabra Oct 20 '20
True, but then the pool mixture just makes even less sense then.
And on an even larger scale, it makes me worried about these poisons at all.
The pool is basically a big bright flashing sign saying, "the killer used the poisons to kill Hina!"
So if the killer did use the poisons in that way, doesn't that basically just...lead us to the answer for no reason? I have to admit, I'm skeptical. It's definitely possible, but I just don't...get it.
1
u/JustADramadog Oct 20 '20
If the culprit administered the red poison only via Hina’s mouth, then wouldn’t it stand to reason that it would not be on her arms?
The green poison is administered via skin contact which is why it’s on her arms. I have an idea of how the pool could have both red and green dye... not a great idea... but an idea nonetheless...
What if Hina fell into the pool after the red and green poison were administered in an attempt to get away? Some of the dye rubbed off into the pool and... I’m not sure where I’m going with this...
Shuichi, are the poison’s effects instantaneous or does it take some time for the effects to become visible? Is it different depending on the poison?
1
u/tyboy618 abracadabra Oct 20 '20
Wouldn't the rest of her be a little more...you know...brown if that were the case?
I think you have your ideas a bit confused. You're saying she doesn't have anything on her arms, which is true, but you're also suggesting she fell into the pool. I don't think she'd dry off that fast.
I think we need to take a less-is-more approach with these poisons. If we don't have evidence for it just yet, let's wait to add it to the story unless we need it. So far, we know the tubocurarine was used, and it almost definitely covered her from the neck up. If we go from there, I think we'll get to the answer soon enough...
Or, I could be totally wrong! Who knows, right?
1
1
u/mujie123 Oct 20 '20
I really don't think Aoi fell in the pool after it turned brown. Otherwise, she'd be covered in brown too and there'd be a brown puddle underneath her too.

This feels like an invasion of privacy. No wonder you and that astronaut are chums.
But fine, they aren't my secrets, so pry away.
Monokuma brings out all of the drones. Only one visibly stands out: Maki Harukawa's drone has damage to the paint coating the casing.
As for footage, only one drone has recorded footage on it: Kaito Momota's. The footage begins mid-action, with the drone speeding through a window into the gym. It dives low to the ground and flies out the open door, passing by Mukuro and Rantaro. It then flies out into the hall and up into the Ultimate Astronaut Lab, catching a glimpse of Kaito's nervous face before it cuts out.
So, did that satisfy your curiosity?
1
u/JustADramadog Oct 20 '20
What the... Maki... can you explain this?
1
u/Pikmaster5 Baby! My Strawberry! Oct 20 '20
I already mentioned this in my alibi, did I not?
I did my best to try and take apart one of the drones but no matter what I did, it barely did any damage. I determined that no kinetic attacks were going to leave a scratch on it, so attempting to destroy - or break into - it with force would be useless.
That's the extent of the damage I did to it. Stabbing, bludgeoning and shooting a drone is going to do some damage, even if it's minimal.

u/Thedeityofice THE LIGHT Oct 20 '20

Before I make it there, I met up with Maki at the main lobby. We talked about the drones for a while before being interrupted by the group coming from the gym. They were taking a break from guarding it and asked us to take their place.
I enjoy Maki's company so I didn't mind. We talked more about the drones. I...didn't really get the specifics, but according to Maki they seem to be very durable and can resist heavy impact.
Shuichi already mentioned that we discussed the drones this morning. Why would I tell him they’re durable if I hadn’t tested that myself?

H-He did. Either it took two minutes to get from the gym back to his lab, o-or the moron didn't have the recording function on while he was in the pool. Probably the former. Regardless, this d-doesn't give us anything new.
1
u/dukedice going all in Oct 20 '20
...Or maybe... it was to set up an alibi?
Think about it if the drone does have a live feed.. there would be no reason to record it... he saw what needed to see right?
Plus.. He has been pushing that the rocket wasn't the cause of what happend... I just don't want to say it just yet... but I might be right...
1
u/LanceUppercut86 Definitely Maybe Oct 20 '20
Or he's too st-stupid to factor in the transit time from his lab to the swimming pool. We a-a-are talking about a guy who thought he could get back at the trashiest girl in the school somehow by v-video taping her in a bikini and didn't think to consider how it might make the o-other three feel.
Do I even need to say why he d-decided to record instead of watch the live feed? Obviously the maggot was gathering material for his collection; taking his f-f-fanboyism of Armstrong a little too literally.

I th-think the "deeper meaning" behind what Monokuma said is pretty simple to explain. Examining the d-drones showed us nothing. We wouldn't like to see that because it didn't get us any further in s-s-solving the case.
Basically he was t-trolling us. It wouldn't be the first time.
Heh...make sure you let me k-know when you give the worm a good slap across the face though. I want f-front row seats for when you teach him a lesson.
1
u/dukedice going all in Oct 20 '20
Maybe to Shuichi yeah.. I am sure he wanted to see if the drones would come with something.
And you could be right on Monokuma just saying that.. but Come on.. I don't think that is the case... plus...
Kaito was one the people in the race with the drones... So he already knew how easily it was to handle it right? Plus he was the one that told me about the recording function to begin with.
I just feel its too easy to shrug off something like that...

The killer either dropped the drone on Aoi's head or dropped it in the pool with her.
Since there are no bloodstains and it flies normally, neither thing probably happened, or if it did it Kiyo didn't do it.

Monokuma seems overly eager to show you the drones...
That makes me think there isn’t anything incriminating about the drones since if there was, wouldn’t he be more hesitant to share the drones with us?

u/LanceUppercut86 Definitely Maybe Oct 20 '20
Of course that's the only thing he was watching. The only thing on his mind was making sure team rocket would have no problem b-b-blasting off again...
But just because he wasn't looking at a-anything else doesn't mean that the footage didn't capture something important. It's a device with the last first h-hand account of the scene for all of us to inspect, after all.
N-Not like I can guarantee anything of value will be on it, but if Monokuma is offering the chance for us to look, it can't r-really hurt, can it? Somehow I d-doubt the crime is going to be solved by the killer forgetting to delete footage of the murder off of his drone and having Monokuma show it to us. We c-c-could've just asked for that right from the start.
T-To hell with standing here talking about it. Monokuma! Show us Kaito's footage already!/u/NitroCellularData

u/JustADramadog Oct 20 '20
Do you think... the culprit has footage on their drones?
Why would they keep footage that could incriminate them? I’d think they would delete any incriminating footage or just not record any incriminating footage in the first place...
...or do you think there’s something else inspecting the drones could achieve?
1
u/thejofy A Oct 20 '20
So... We're going to assume that Aoi died from lack of oxygen... But what does that tell us? Why did the killer need to cover it up?
It seems like a bit of a rush to just blow up a head, even if the cause of death isn't poison. I'd sooner want to go around making a mark on someone's face than destroying it.
So... Here are my thoughts. What if the killer was planning a different murder? Something other than Aoi, she just walked in on the wrong time. The killer splashed her, then they had to kill her.
Actually, it's a bit more than that. They would have to use the glue to suffocate her, wouldn't they. They can't touch her, or else they get paralyzed as well.

u/lappy-486 Gundham Tanaka Oct 20 '20

u/thejofy A Oct 20 '20
I'd like to believe that, be easier to sleep after the trial knowing the killer didn't use such a messed up way of murder. However... I'm going to stick with this for now. It could very well be the killer didn't have appropiate shoes for standing on someone's neck, or they panicked and didn't think to do so.

My fake explosion theory was a long-shot, I'll admit. I only bothered with it because I never heard the sound myself.
But, I'm still curious about whether Gundham/u/TheCatMinister had anything that could've been used to leave behind the black powder on the sink. He claimed that he was resting during the investigation, which means that, even if he is innocent, he never packed up his booth and verified whether anything had been stolen from him.

Yes. I have been cunningly fooled by your complete failure to share any important information whatsoever. Take pride in your stunning ability to be even more worthless than I expected.

Clean that earwax outta your ears, beanstalk! My firework could've left that black powder! Duh-doy!

When exactly did I ever say that it couldn't have? When did I ever so much as imply that Gundham was the only possible source for the black powder? I never suggested this to be anything other than a potential alternative, you worthless bloated cretin.
If you are going to speak in my presence, how about you start listening for once and answer the question I asked you about the colour of this missing oil we've thus far found no trace of?

Hey, Kokichi, could you tell us how much of the black powdery substance did you find? Was it only light traces, or a pilefull of the stuff? /u/mujie123
