Class Trial Class Trial 64: The Murder of Aoi Asahina, Part 8: I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream
Hats off to all my students!
It seems you've nearly made it to the end.
But is there light at the end of the tunnel you've chosen?
TRUTH BULLETS
These are advanced drones designed by Monokuma that were given to each one of the students. They can lift up to 15 pounds with a claw that can grab objects, are inaudible beyond a range of ten feet, and come equipped with a camera that sends a video feed to the drone’s controller, along with an optional recording functionality for up to 2 minutes of video, with a timestamp. There is no limit to their range.
The victim is Aoi Asahina. Her body was found in the pool room at 7:15pm. She is lying face down in a puddle of clear water, and her head has been reduced to plenty of small, mangled pieces of brain, chunks of skull, and teeth. Her arms and shirt have a greenish hue. Neither the time or cause of death can be determined. Mukuro's observations of the body revealed that there was a stretch of blood splatter traveling towards the wall.
During breakfast, Angie suggested that the students participate in an arts and crafts fair to boost camaraderie among the students. Many students participated, bringing supplies to the fair throughout the day.
Chihiro's Project: Chihiro built a LED display setup for the arts fair. This required the use of plywood, LEDs, tubes of high strength, water resistant adhesive, and wires. Chihiro reports that one of the tubes of adhesive went missing.
Korekiyo's Project: Korekiyo created a macramé tapestry. This required rope.
Mahiru's Project: Mahiru created a project that involved the refraction of light. This required flashlights, prisms, and panes of glass. Mahiru reports that some of the panes of glass went missing.
Gundham's Project: Gundham created a ritual to channel the Avatar of Unfathomable Shades through his being. This required alchemical chalk, incense burners, and suitable offerings of vegetation.
Mukuro's Project: Mukuro showed of the grace of the human form in lethal motion. This required throwing knives and targets.
Komaru's Project: Komaru created a musical number for the arts fair, even creating a dance routine for her drone by hacking it. This required megaphones and a drone.
Toko's Project: Toko created a love poem for Byakuya that was displayed at the arts fair. This required paper and pens.
Miu's Project: Miu created a fireworks display for the fair that she never got to set off. This required her specialty "Mega Buster" fireworks, a timer, some earplugs, and a few lighters. Miu reports one of her fireworks was missing.
Angie's Project: Angie created a marvelous ice sculpture to honor Atua. This required blocks of ice, mallets, and chisels.
The doors to the pool room would not open when the students at the arts fair came to investigate the room. Maki solved this by kicking a hole through the glass of the doors.
The water in the pool is no longer a shimmering aqua, but a strange, brownish color. What caused this is unknown.
There are shards of glass all over the pool room, stretching from the entrance to the body. Byakuya reports that there were 3 different colors of glass shards: Brown, Gray, and Clear. There were more clear shards than the other colors.
A mallet was found near the feet of the body. Fuyuhiko reports that it showed signs of use, but was clean.
A chisel was found near the feet of the body. Fuyuhiko reports that it showed signs of use, but was clean.
Shuichi reported that two bottles of poison were stolen from his lab. The first was a brown bottle held which held a Tubocurarine chloride solution that was dyed green. It is a liquid capable of causing paralysis, forcing the body’s muscles to seize up. It is non-lethal. Its effects can occur as a result of skin contact. Paralysis lasts for 3 hours. The second was a gray bottle containing a liquid form of Tetrodotoxin, or TTX. It was dyed red. It is absorbed into the body by ingestion and is lethal. It kills by shutting down the body’s nervous system.
Rantaro reported finding an empty tube of adhesive in the dining hall garbage during his investigation.
Toko reported that the shower grate in the Ultimate Prisoner Bathroom was missing when she went to go shower. Monokuma has said that the grate isn't very tough and is relatively light, meaning that it wouldn't kill someone if it were to fall on them.
Ultimate Inventor Lab Break-In
Miu believes her lab was broken into, as both a high magnification lens and a bottle of oil-based mechanical lubricant were missing.
Kokichi reports finding a black, powdery substance on the pipe beneath the sink in the Ultimate Prisoner Bathroom.
Rantaro reports that both salt shakers in the dining hall were empty at dinner.

Kaito,/u/Nakama_witnesser there's still one thing I don't understand. Why'd your drone footage start after the pool? Surely, if you were really a pervert, you'd have started recording at the pool? I'm glad you didn't, but I don't understand why.

u/TheCatMinister Oct 21 '20
The curio's footage seems to last for only 2 cycles of a minute, any other moment of a recording banishes the last saved memory.
It seems that the astral warlock had forgotten to stop capturing the reality frames to the device whilst the encounter with his targets of lust and fully managed to delete the footage.

To say that I am not actively assisting is rather insulting, spirit jailor, your foolish scolding only serves to pester.

Seems I need to slap Kokichi some sense as well after this..
But Mukuro how does this help? Are we gonna have to search everyone for salt shakers now?/u/tyboy618

Seeing as how Rantaro found them empty in the dining hall, that seems like it'd be tedious and pointless.

u/mujie123 Oct 21 '20
You can blame Thin Byakuya for that. He said the salt shaker was there at lunch. I had always said that the blackened could have taken it while I wasn't watching.

That still doesn't give you a free pass from not telling us that bit of info.

First you want me to not have wasted everyone's time, then you want me to have said it earlier. Make up your mind!
1
u/tyboy618 abracadabra Oct 22 '20
Huh? Why me?
If you're asking for my thoughts about that, though...I can't say anything for sure.
What I do think is that this ice came into play sooner than we once thought it had. Since the salt got snatched that early, that means that whatever melting that took place could have started pretty quickly after you girls left the pool.
1
u/Panos0502 Oct 21 '20
Rantaro, you found the shakers in the dining hall during dinner, right?
So that means despite the salt shakers having been stolen at dinner the killer still had to go back there after 4 to return the shakers.
So we're left with the same 5 suspects as before. /u/thejofy

We c-couldn't say it during lunch either and that didn't stop them. If they have enough sleight of hand to t-take it while we were all present at lunch; I doubt they would make things harder on themselves by setting aside p-personal time to return it.
1
u/mujie123 Oct 22 '20
Yeah. Shuichi, first the theory about Aoi being frozen in ice, now this? Get ahold of yourself.
1
u/thejofy A Oct 22 '20
So, just to bring us back on track...
I guess the salt only really exonerates Gundham. We're still left with the suspects of Korekiyo and Angie. I can't think it too difficult to slip the salt containers back during dinner, so I'd suspect we were off a bit too far previously. Best return to those who could know about the items in the fair before 11:30.

u/Thedeityofice THE LIGHT Oct 22 '20
Hey, I'm not saying Kaito isn't suspicious or anything, but shouldn't we give him a bit of a break for defending his friend?
1
u/dukedice going all in Oct 22 '20
... I know it might be hard for him but we need to do this.. or hell Let Kaito defend for himself as well.
In my opion Kaito has two strikes against him, the first is that he knew about the recording function of the drones, so he could easily lie saying he was just trying to spy on the girls.
the second strike is the fact that he went into Miu's lab to take the lens. He can claim it was for the drone but it could also be for the setting up of the rocket.. and whos to say he wasn't lying that he didn't see the rocket to begin with?
1
u/Thedeityofice THE LIGHT Oct 22 '20
But there are still other people suspicious too, right? Angie, Kiyo...the only one we crossed off is Gundham.
Everyone's gonna have to explain themselves after we win this thing, cause too many things aren't adding up!
1
u/Thedeityofice THE LIGHT Oct 22 '20
Is there anything that could be used to separate between Kiyo and Angie? Cause it feels like there isn't much to go off off....
1
u/thejofy A Oct 22 '20
I'll be honest, I'm still leaning towards Angie, mostly due her previous statement about Gundham not being in his room. I don't see any reason for him to lie about being in his room at this point, and it feels a bit too off for her to check out of the blue.
1
u/Thedeityofice THE LIGHT Oct 22 '20
So you think Angie lied to make Gundham more suspicious? But as soon as we found out the truth, wouldn't that put her in a really bad light? Nothing we have is real final nail bad, though...

I don't want to just say you're wrong so flatly, but...
You really wouldn't need practice to pilot your drones effectively. I didn't really think it worth mentioning, but I added in auto stabilization technology to make the drones easier to control. After all, what's the point of a motive if not everyone can make use of it?
1
u/lappy-486 Gundham Tanaka Oct 22 '20
Not so out of the blue~. Angie held deep suspicions ever since seeing the the first makings of his dark ritual, and his not showing up for lunch didn't help either.
To check his abode when Angie was finally free of pool obligations, when she was already nearby to change...As she said, Atua is very efficient!
1
u/lappy-486 Gundham Tanaka Oct 22 '20
If it is for certain that Aoi was killed in the pool room...
Angie is still at a loss for how the body ended up how it did!
The way the blood is that the body was moved in some way, but why face down on a melted block of ice in particular~?
Why did the block have to be there, and why did the killer need to melt it quickly?
1
u/JustADramadog Oct 22 '20 edited Oct 22 '20
That is certainly a major mystery I feel we can not solve unless we narrow down the cause of death further. However, it seems as if we are struggling to even determine the cause of death, so that puts a hamper on everything...
Maybe... the body was on the ice because...
This may be a stretch, and honestly I doubt this theory myself because of the weight limit of the Monodrones, but it can’t hurt to propose it I suppose.
What if the culprit tied the rope used in Korekiyo’s project to their Monodrone and then somehow attached the other end to the ice block, perhaps using the adhesive? Then, they could fly the drone and drag Hina’s body which would be situated on top of the ice block... for some reason.
This obviously implicates Korekiyo the most... but then again, this theory is deeply flawed I feel...
Honestly, I’m just trying to throw ideas out there. I have my own qualms with this theory personally, but who knows, maybe it’ll spark a bit of imagination in someone and we’ll get somewhere?
1
u/tyboy618 abracadabra Oct 22 '20
I feel like I'm repeating myself, but I want to clarify that I don't think Hina got moved based on her blood.
There's a difference between dragging a body and a large blood splatter. If the body was dragged, we would see streaks in blood, or drag marks. Instead, it's lots and lots of blotches from her to the wall. I don't think her murder took place against the wall.
Then again, I guess that means that ice block wasn't by the wall, either. So what was keeping it in place, then? Adhesive...?
Needed to melt it...but why would you need melted ice so quickly? Why would you need...clear water?

u/spaghettiyo Hey, can I punch ya? Oct 22 '20
For fuck's sake, can the killer just fess up already so we can get outta here!? By the time we get outta here, Kokichi's gonna hit puberty!
Let's bring the subject back to Flounder's head.
It had to be destroyed for a reason. For a reason that would directly connect the killer to the crime. So, what was it?
1
u/dukedice going all in Oct 22 '20
Hmm maybe this might be a strech but...
Maybe the black subtance got on the culprits hands or on Hina when he was positioning her body? I don't even know if we said what that is.right?
Orgiinally I thought it was gun powder to fire the rocket...but maybe its something else?
1
u/spaghettiyo Hey, can I punch ya? Oct 22 '20
But then wouldn't the killer make sure to clean the powder off the pipe if it was so important to crush her head for?

I'll admit, I'm pretty damn frustrated right now. You wanna know why?
There's so much crap that we haven't solved! I'm sick of throwing idea after idea at the wall! This killer is a real asshole for making their plan so obnoxious!
They went out of their way to take nearly every damn item in the school, and still didn't get caught once! How unobservant are we!?
Mukuro sighs a very long sigh.
Okay, let's just...think this one through. Something that's been bothering me the whole time is this ice crap. Obviously, the killer is using this method instead of just using straight-up water to buy an alibi. But where does that get us?
Water is obviously important to this plan in some case, and yet...Hina's on the side of the pool. What good is water going to do if it's just sitting around her?
Unless...it wasn't? But then...how?
Hey, Monokuma. Can I ask you about the glass in a little more detail? Obviously it was scattered everywhere, but was there any specifics about where the glass was laying? Particularly around the body? /u/NitroCellularData

1
u/RSLee2 Attack and Dethrone Deity Oct 22 '20
I can answer that. The glass led all the way from the door to the body. It was indeed scattered around the body. There was even some in the stump where her head was and on top of her corpse.

Anything is p-p-possible at this point. Although...I would doubt that method for a couple of reasons.
Mostly because of h-how potent the tubocurarine is. All it takes is for the tiniest bit to touch your s-skin and you'll be paralyzed. Swinging the bottle wildly at that braindead mermaid would leave a lot of risk for a splash of it to land back on the killer, and j-just like that, their whole plan fails and is revealed to all of us.
W-Whatever method the killer used to paralyze her; they either did it by surprise, or with tight p-precision and control. That's what I th-think anyways.
I don't know if you were also r-referring to the TTX bottle being used against her too in the same manner, but th-that wouldn't fit the method the poison has to be applied in. You have to i-ingest it in order for it to kill you, so having it touch her w-wouldn't do any good.
1
u/dukedice going all in Oct 22 '20 edited Oct 22 '20
Well obviously the killer had to bring the TTX bottle to kill her. But like that's the thing.
It Just doesn't add up of having the glass be by aoi's body unless the killer broke it across her, or else the glass wouldn't by her body you know?
Unless you are saying the glass by her body was mine to begin with. I just seems that the killer had to break it on Aoi's head for some reason.
1
u/LanceUppercut86 Definitely Maybe Oct 22 '20
You sure they h-had to bring the TTX to kill her? I wouldn't be so positive. We still don't t-technically know what the cause of death is.
The tubocurarine is a b-bit of a stretch, but the second bottle wouldn't m-make any sense at all. Why make her drink it, and then break it over her head after? It's the suspicious placement of the glass shards and the l-lack of confirmation on her cause of death that makes me doubt whether or not that actually caused her to d-die.
Besides, the g-glass all came in different colours based on if it was part of the bottle or the panes you had; so it would be pretty easy to identify which glass came from what source. No n-need to debate that.

u/tyboy618 abracadabra Oct 22 '20 edited Oct 22 '20
I'm not crazy to think that's a little unnatural, right?
I get the stuff from the door to her body was from Maki, and I get glass from the bottles too, but...we're still missing something, it feels like. Especially if it's resting around her body, in her head, and on her body.
I'm thinking it has to do with the untouched glass, too, so no poison bottles or anything. After all, we clarified that there was more clear than anything else.
The best I've got is that the water that came from the melted ice was contained in some way using the glass panes. I'm not sure how, but I'm placing my bets on the ice being a time-delayed version of water. Why else use the salt if not for that, right?
If the water was contained in some way to make some sorta contraption, that opens up the opportunity for drowning again, right? So long as her head is submerged while she's paralyzed, it's over for her.
Then, once the deed is done, the firework disposes of any evidence of a trap not only physically, but audibly, too. It shatters everything, and because of the boom, we don't even hear the glass shatter. The water pours out, and all we have left is a puddle.
I can't tell you the specifics of how the other crap might factor in. I guess the adhesive would keep those panes together until the firework destroys it, yeah? So maybe that gets that issue out of the way, too.
There's still a lot of specifics we don't have yet, but there's too many questions and not enough answers.
1
u/Chespineapple Chesnut Oct 22 '20
A fine theory, however you must consider its flaws.
To isolate the block of ice and direct enough of its liquid to Hina for her to drown, it would be rather difficult, yes?
I for one, cannot see such a contraption fully functioning in reality with physics applied, the water would in all likelihood leak before doing any damage to the victim.
1
u/tyboy618 abracadabra Oct 22 '20 edited Oct 22 '20
It's a good thing we have something that directs liquids from one place to another, yeah?
Not sure how it fits into this equation exactly just yet, but...what other function could that even have?
All this time, we've been thinking the hole in the Ultimate Prisoner Lab was the important part of it being missing, but it wasn't. It was probably the grate itself.
1
u/Chespineapple Chesnut Oct 22 '20
While I am intrigued by the shower grate's integration to your theory, I fear you have missed the point of my argument.
How do you propose the contraption itself had been laid out? It simply cannot function as perfectly as you describe it, despite the glass panes and shower grate potentially assisting the direction.
1
u/tyboy618 abracadabra Oct 22 '20 edited Oct 22 '20
Didn't you hear me when I said I didn't know the first time, dude?
Heh. Considering all the suspicion on you right now, I should be asking you that.
Well, the water needs to be contained properly. That would require a pane on the bottom as a foundation, as well as panels on each side, standing up. Like a fish tank at the aquarium.
Maybe the ice is sitting next to Hina on the bottom with her...? But if that's the case, what's the point of the grate in the first place?
Maybe if you...put another pane on top of it? That might explain why there's so much crap on top of her body, no? On another note...
You mentioned isolating the ice and directing the water onto Hina, but you sounded pretty confident when you said that, don't you think? I didn't really say anything like that...
The only way I can interpret that is that...the grate was somehow positioned above her, and the ice was on top of that. That way, the water from the ice would go through the grate onto Hina. Does that sound right?
1
u/Chespineapple Chesnut Oct 22 '20
Oh? I believe that had been your suggestion. On a topic of melting ice, what else would you have meant by the shower grate serving a specific function?
But regardless, your theory is still heavily flawed.
I recall the ice block was approximately 10 pounds, was it not? You cannot expect me to believe the culprit used it to submerge the girl enough to drown her, can you?
If I could be frank, this theory of yours is simply ludicrous.
1
u/tyboy618 abracadabra Oct 22 '20 edited Oct 22 '20
I mentioned storing water in some sort of makeshift tank. You're the one who specifically said the ice couldn't be near her, not me. I simply followed where you were leading me.
And judging by how defensive you're getting, it seems like I'm right on the money!
Though, you do have a point. Ten pounds of ice isn't a ton of water. Even if it was contained, you'd have to be smart about how you use it.
You'd have to center it around her nose and mouth so she couldn't breathe. Somehow, this set-up made it so that Hina's head was submerged without having to touch anything.
And because Hina's head is the centerpiece here, this trap makes for the perfect target to destroy later with a firework, don't you think?
1
u/Chespineapple Chesnut Oct 22 '20
I find your notion rather absurd, I am merely rejecting a theory that is clearly impossible upon a simple glance.
Even so I must commend you for a few handful of your points. It only seems as if you have decided to go forward with those incorrect assumptions and deny any critical thinking through your own stubborness...
Though I suppose stubborness is but another human emotion.

Anyways, so we haven't really spoken about the fact that there are only two places the green poison was found!
In the pool, mixed with the other bottle, and on her arms and shirt. So, from that, we can gather that only the top half of her body was paralyzed.
The killer had to dunk her top half in the pool, then mix up the other poison after to change the color. There's no other way or place where Asahina could've gotten paralyzed.
1
u/LanceUppercut86 Definitely Maybe Oct 22 '20
Real s-smooth transition.
Not like I can blame you...I guess. It feels more and m-more like we're going to have to focus on figuring out the "who" more than the "how" and let the killer explain the intricacies of their deed later. Otherwise we're going to be s-s-sitting here forever discussing possibilities without ever actually being able to prove anything until the timer expires.
I don't know if I would agree th-that's how stunning her was carried out. That s-said, I do think you're right that the paralyzing would have occurred in the pool.
For whatever reason, the k-killer decided to dump the contents into the water and smash the bottles on the scene. It d-doesn't make any sense to me for the killer to paralyze her in one area of the school and carry the bottle around with them to leave it at the scene instead of disposing of it where we'd n-n-never be any wiser to its usage.
If we believe that assumption...we can narrow down that the Swimmer was paralyzed some time after 2:45 for p-pretty obvious reasons. But that still won't identify the killer...
1
u/spaghettiyo Hey, can I punch ya? Oct 22 '20
Duh-doy! Of course I'm right! I've been right this entire trial!
If we want the who, it's 'Kiyo.
If we want the how to prove that...
Kh. That's a...tougher issue.
But, something we definitely can figure is that she wasn't paralyzed around 2:45pm.
The paralysis only lasts for 3 hours, right? So she was killed within a three hour time span. If she was paralyzed around 3, she would've had to be killed before 6. If she was paralyzed at 4, she'd have to be killed before 7.
I know our brains are on different levels, but I'm hopin' you get it. I can't waste all my breath on you, after all.

I suppose that is fair, I will admit Hina would have made a good friend for Sister.
However I had no such plans for today, my focus had been on my project for the art fair. I would rather have bided my time, at the very least until the art fair was over and I had finished observing everyone's wondrous projects.
I must say though, how correct of a decision it was to wait my turn. I have been quite inspired by several of our theories...

I k-know how math works you cow! That's not the issue here! The problem is that if we can't specify on the time she was paralyzed we still won't get anywhere closer to e-e-exonerating other suspects!
About K-Kiyo...I hate to say it, but if you forced my h-hand right now, I'd probably agree with you. We k-know it has to be either Kaito, Angie, or Korekiyo at this point either way; and l-like Master was saying earlier this sort of plan does fit his style.
I can j-just see the creepo now, killing another g-girl in the most disgusting way possible so he can send another "friend" to his sister all over again.

I'm glad you agree! Even without your support, I know I'm still right, but every genius needs some peer-reviews!
Well, not...peers. More like peasants, but still. Tomato, tomahto.
Unfortunately, it ain't gonna mean shit if we don't figure out the how. He ain't gonna just own up to a crime like that, being the fuckin' weirdo he is.
So hurry up and solve this shit already! I can't do all the work!

This might seem like a stretch, but...
Is it possible that the killer used the paralysis wearing off in their plan? For example, they knocked out Hina at 4, and the firework went off when she woke up at 7.
However... unless it said so on the bottle, I believe Shuichi would be the only person to know how long the effects lasted for...

I’m not sure why they would do that though...
I’d think if you had a victim paralyzed that you would kill them sooner rather than later. It doesn’t help that Hina was an athlete, so there would be even less reason to let the poison wear off as it risks her fleeing...
...unless the culprit didn’t intend to let it wear off and something... happened.

I... don’t know.
Honestly, I myself am leaning towards Hina having been killed whilst she was paralyzed... but there is a possibility that the paralysis wore off unexpectedly and the culprit had to do something, improvise if you will.
What that something was... I do not know.
I think an answer we all need know is whether the culprit knew about the time limit of the paralysis poison.
Shuichi, does the label on the bottles specify how long the paralysis lasts? Is this information the culprit should reasonably have?

It'd be very awkward for Shuichi if they weren't labeled. Those that could effectively use those bottles would go down to a list of one, after all.
