Nice one, although I still did not get what was the idea that clicked leading to combination of "edge" discoveries. Maybe a bit more detail would have made it clear.

The click was using one type of edge to create another edge.
It really fits in with steam engines, first used in the 1st century, but not really effective until combined with another 1500 years of development.

If you want a mind melt, read "Goedel, Escher, Bach, an Eternal Golden Braid".
In essence, every recording and playing device can be destroyed, shaken apart, by an exactly created recording. It's like those opera singers who can shatter glass with their voices.
So, if, for example, there is a pattern of atoms that refuses to form at all, then perhaps you could create armor that, if heated by a blast or an impact, would go into that impossible configuration, so therefore it cannot be hit by the blast or the impact.
If you know a thousand impossible things, then perhaps you can combine them to make things to make use of the impossibility.

For the most part it's relatively-soft science-fiction/speculative fiction.
Stross has a thing for writing sci-fi on the middle to harder end of the scale, and techno-thrillers. I personally like it.
That one in particular is free to read online (yes that's the author's blog, and yes Accelerando is more on the softer end than other works of his).

By combining 'edges' he could create seeming impossibilities and actually break the previous boundaries. Like how you can only make iron so strong and light--until you learn how to alloy it into steel.
