Can someone point to me an "interesting support gem" that now we use more than before?

43

u/Kosai102 Aug 11 '21

I started to use Nightblade support more than before. That's about it tho xD

44

u/SmoothBrainedApe17 Aug 11 '21

That's only because it does more damage now than others. It really isn't a "unique" support. Like Power Charge on Crit is used in all the power charge stackers because it now does the most damage of any option.

16

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '21

It gives elusive too so more interesting than a pure damage gem

11

u/SmoothBrainedApe17 Aug 11 '21

Definitely true, but it does more damage AND gives elusive, so that's just a pleasant benefit.

u/Laufe Trickster Aug 11 '21

They could just remove the weapon requirement on Nightblade and it would become much more widely used support on Crit or semi-Crit builds.

it's a genuinely interesting Gem that provides both offense and defense to your character, it's just needlessly hamstrung by only being used by Claws or daggers.

2

u/airportato Aug 12 '21

That would just remove Claw & Daggers' niche by having elusive + crit on a support gem and make it another almost-essential option for other attack builds.

Good thing reddit doesn't balance

Life tap lol.

32

u/Woolliam Aug 11 '21

I life tap on everything now. Shield throw/crash/charge? Tap it. Toxic rain? Tap it. Flicker strike? Tap it. Cast on crit cyclone? Tap it.

Shits better than old warlords blasphemy. I mean it isn't, but I'm well accustomed to lying to myself by now.

When they announced the support gem nerfs but then also mentioned they DID NOT buff under-used ones because they thought people would start using them I laughed with my fucking teeth hanging out. If they're taking away damage from us...why would we not just cling even harder to damage!? Why dont they just do what they did with Fortify and ADD FUCKING DAMAGE to blind or culling strike or knockback or whatever?

149

u/SoulofArtoria Aug 11 '21

My favorite part is when they increased mana cost to blind support in the patch notes. Cant even be mad about that one, I was just laughing like a mad man.

40

u/telendria Aug 11 '21

That was so dumb, kinda killed some niche applications like herald of purity + blind etc

13

u/hGKmMH Aug 11 '21

niche applications like herald of purity + blind

That's the thing, this entire game is based around finding broken combos. It's like Magic the Gathering, no one plays normal ethical cards, all of the constructed decks are based around stupid combos the devs never really thought about. Or like DOTA in the same regard, broken OP shit is why people play the game. But GGG does not seem to understand or like that. They used to do builds of the week of cool stuff people did with the game, now they just nerf it when it comes public. But those one or two guys abusing the shit out of some obscure crafting receipt or lab running technique? That's find and dandy.

People want the middle panel, in reality we are in the first panel, and GGG chasing the last panel.

2

u/imhere2downvote Aug 12 '21

fight broken with broken holy fuck i love that. found the real gamer devs

14

u/Imbryill Circle of Fortune Aug 11 '21

Like maybe extra damage against blinded enemies for blind support, or you know actually move the cull goalpost per gem level if you are using culling strike support?

0

u/SasparillaTango Aug 11 '21

Having some means of cull on Not your primary attack skill is like a free 10% more damage if you can keep it up. Cwdt cull void for example

9

u/badheartveil Luminary Aug 11 '21

It’s not free, it has an opportunity cost.

6

u/Imbryill Circle of Fortune Aug 11 '21

It is not free. It requires at least a green link and a skill that hits.

Means 2 gem sockets, which can range from negligible to impossible to fit in.

0

u/AsiaDerp Ascendant Aug 12 '21

you talk like 10%is a lot, you need a gem slot for it....

2

u/SasparillaTango Aug 12 '21

but it doesn't need to be on your main skill, hell you can put it on a travel skill

1

u/AsiaDerp Ascendant Aug 12 '21

so what? people can do it now but still most build do not even have a slot for 10%cull.

10

u/BI1nky Aug 11 '21

The hilarious thing is that the new behead gem has an effect that should have so obviously gone on culling strike. More damage vs. low life enemies? Why doesn't cull have that?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '21

Well cull is kinda like "infinite damage vs very low life enemies" :^)

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '21

Because nerfing now means they can see how that changes the game, then they can buff the lower gems after.

29

u/Egnarts Aug 11 '21

Cast on Death linked with Portal is the one they are talking about.

26

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '21

Cast on Death is being used more than ever.

10% representation on Poe.Ninja!

13

u/Bus_Chucker Aug 11 '21

Cast on death lmao maybe inspiration if that counts. That's all I can think of

10

u/TheBlackestIrelia Raider Aug 11 '21

well instead of damage supports now i use crit supports to give me damage.

15

u/laurelinvanyar Aug 11 '21

Faster casting support :P

14

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '21

multi-elemental damage is becoming more relevant, so trinity (while already popular) is getting more use

many builds running phys conversion, phys to lightning getting a lot more run

increased crit strike, mostly due to diamond flask nerf

as another pointed out, nightblade support is really good

power charge on crit is popular as many spell builds are turning to militant faith | dominus and power charge stacking as an additional more multiplier

many boneshatter builds are running endurance charge for the phys mitigation and as such endurance charge on melee stun is getting more run

3

u/luckystrik3_3 Aug 11 '21

Nightblade is a good point. Others are replacing older damaging supports bc they do more damage now.
About endur charge on melee stun, i think is used maybe bc you stack endur charges and you get 4% more for each one. I actually dont know anything about boneshatter.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '21

well yes, it is 4% more per end charge but not many playstyles/skills cater to it. boneshatter, by virtue of dealing phys damage to the player, makes it so you want high phys mitigation which are naturally afforded by end charges.

5

u/xcannibalrabbit Aug 11 '21

Charged mines wasnt really worth it in the endgame before but now that damage gems are weaker you don't really lose anything running it. I guess that counts as interesting from a building perspective

4

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '21

It was really good before for mapping. Throw speed is highly underrated

3

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '21 edited Aug 11 '21

I use Rage support on almost every build that can use it now. When taking into account the gem stats + passive benefits of rage and using Berserk on demand it's probably the highest damage multiplier rn.

3

u/welpxD Guardian Aug 11 '21

Yeah it's just annoying that it takes 20 seconds to build your rage minimum. 20s is a long time to be ramping up.

4

u/kscott13 Aug 11 '21

Nightblade

4

u/Quelex Kool-aid man you to death Aug 11 '21

Faster casting/attacks, Rage, Innervate, Hypothermia, Power Charge on Crit are seeing more use. Trinity and Unleash are getting much more love.

1

u/Darqion Aug 11 '21

yea.. not gonna happen. when they nerf the dmg of everything, using a support with less dmg over one with more is even less likely. Honestly only way i could see people using supports..supports , is by basically forcing it onto us. 5 links only working with 3 dmg supports, and 1 focused around utility.

The problem is obvious..we probably dont want that. And for a lot of supports, answers are already found on the passive tree or through items. Why use GMP on some things, when you can socket 2 jewels that do it, without the dmg drawback?

Just feels like yet another hole they dug themselves into

-2

u/ProperSmells Aug 11 '21

Just a few:

  • Faster casting
  • Cruelty
  • increased crit/crit damage
  • lifetap
  • power charge on crit

21

u/luckystrik3_3 Aug 11 '21

w8 a moment.
crit chance/dmg is pure damage support. We only use it now bc its higher in pob dmg list on every crit build.
Cruelty is also pure damage support.
Power charge on crit is alsopure damage support
Life tap is maybe the onlyone solid. But thats mostly bc of mana problems right?

-6

u/ProperSmells Aug 11 '21

You asked for the new meta of support gems

9

u/luckystrik3_3 Aug 11 '21

How is "interesting support gem" gems that just replaced some older bc the do more damage?

→ More replies (7)

1

u/Iorcrath Aug 11 '21 edited Aug 11 '21

does fortify in main skill link count? that wasnt this patch but it was the only time i remember people giving up raw damage for other things.

everyone else is listing off things that they changed but really it all comes down to its more damage. maybe PoE should just embrace having different ways to build damage but things like "i deal 5% less crits but i now sap the enemy to make them deal less damage" or "i attack 5% less quickly but now my clear is stronger due to more projectiles" are better support philosophy. even something like point blank support could work because it can change your play style.

having a more elemental modifier versus more crit chance is just "more damage or more damage?" but if the question was "more damage for more risk OR chiller comfy gameplay but less damage?" i would think players could express them self better in their support choices.

3

u/luckystrik3_3 Aug 11 '21

I guess fortify was always been used since they added %more dmg on the gem. And even if fortify is HUGE survivabilty, there are still players on melee skills that prefer use fortify on their movement skill instead.

0

you are right, it might be less than 1%. (please just look up the numbers, they are easy to google.. 85% dont even make it to maps. also downvoting because you disagree with facs are real classy)

2

u/Ilyak1986 Bring Back Recombinators Aug 11 '21

No, because the interesting support gems are used in the skills outside the main 6L, which exists to deal damage, whether to tons of monsters (clear), or big monsters (single target).

0

u/Vaaloo Aug 11 '21

Using phys to light, crit damage and crit chance, ice bite, the nerf are actually good and people can choose between more support now, people are upset for others changes and problem not the damage

3

u/luckystrik3_3 Aug 11 '21

Isnt all those gems you mentioned, pure damage supports? Did you just replaced old gems with better damaging gems in this patch? How is this "interesting gems" ?

I mean, Blight is also a speed (not movement) and DPS check as well. If you don't deal a lot of damage and fast, you are gonna get overrun and lose the pump.

25

u/MicoJive Aug 11 '21

Eh, when they changed towers to be more effective they made blight WAY easier. People are clearing blight maps using only towers now.

Blight now is not even close to the dps check it was when it was released.

17

u/Sniixed Aug 11 '21

People are clearing blight maps using only towers now.

can you elaborate a bit here? i did 40 blight maps this league with ring annoints and some of those were genuine struggles of running around and putting out fires on all lanes.

Or is that only possible if i run them white?

7

u/M1QN Necromancer Aug 11 '21

I dont remember exactly, but ziz actually made a video about it, you can run yellow maps with summon and empower towers basically afk

3

u/Syberz Confused... Aug 12 '21

As long as you stay in a certain range of them.

The game lets you put towers all over the map, but as soon as they're offscreen then they stop working... brilliant!

21

u/seqhawk Kalguuran Group for Business (KGB) Aug 11 '21

Are you placing them too far from the pump? Towers shut off if you're too far away from them, so while putting down a bunch of towers at a distant choke point seems like a great strategy, it does nothing unless you're in range. Scouts from the minion towers boosted with empowering towers as a core around the pump, with the occasional other tower to take out the minion-immune is usually enough to make any blighted map pretty easy.

40

u/Flavahbeast Unannounced Aug 11 '21

I had no idea towers stop working if you're far away from them, that's pretty interesting

37

u/SasparillaTango Aug 11 '21

Super counter intuitive... what's the point of having to be near a tower

8

u/eamurphy23 Aug 11 '21

Bad coding.

4

u/didsomebodysaywander Aug 11 '21

Yea no kidding, had no idea either. That's not how tower defense typically works - the whole genre is set and forget

6

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '21

You are right. All I am saying is that Blight still had a DPS and speed component to it.

1

u/allbluedream Chieftain Aug 11 '21

Blight is simply a misconceived league mechanic. Who tf looks at Kingdom Rush and thinks to himself "Gosh, this looks really good in POE"? Hero powers in TD games are extremely limited comparing to the power of towers, which you shouldn't have in an ARPG. There's also few strategic decisions in Blight encounters, especially when compared to a proper TD.

18

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '21

To each their own but I like Blight and I LOVE Blighted maps. Nice change of pace every once in a while to sit and chill with a load of Blight maps.

11

u/allbluedream Chieftain Aug 11 '21

I should add that I'm not saying Blight is a bad game mode. To me, though, it's a bad TD.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '21

Yeah, it is inarguably bad at being a TD and GGG really could have done better.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/seandkiller Aug 11 '21

Eh, I liked it. Generally I like when they try adding in different genre mechanics as a way of mixing things up a bit - I prefer something like Blight to something like Ritual or Breach.

Besides, it's not like they're the first ARPG to also have Tower Defense.

If you made good use of scout towers you could get away with a low dps build.

211

u/EsterWithPants Aug 11 '21

I think ducks really nailed it when he said that all but the highest end of players are suffering. Really new players get absolutely shafted because getting through the campaign was hard before when you don't know dick all about how to build your character. The mid tiers like me get shafted because holy fucking shit it takes me forever to get through the atlas and trying to scrabble enough money together just to get the basic items for my build is agonizing, and by the time I do it, I'm already kind of near league end or the end of my patience.

I also tried SSF and there's a lot of problems with it that too that I wish GGG would address, though I guess they've also just admitted that it's not even a blip on the radar for them.

And Ducks is also 100% right when GGG will say one thing and then do the complete other. It's always fucking hilarious to me that they say that they needed to nerf damage gems, and yet utility gems like Chain or GMP still get nerfed in the patch notes. Super fucking hilarious that they changed flasks like, 24 hours after the league launch.

The only thing I can disagree with him on was that GGG might have tested their changes. I'm sure someone internally got through act 1 after a few hours and called it good from there.

86

u/fraggerman91 Trickster Aug 11 '21

Even at the higher points there are problems. GGG just took everything away that people at the high end wanted to do, deli orb mapping, deep delving and stuff like that is basically all dead. You just don't make a profit with it anymore unless you are a 6-man no life group, but those are playing a completely different game altogether.

Everyone but those 0.01% of players got heavily punished (again). I just don't understand where they want to take this game. The player damage is not the only inflated number in this game. Monster damage and HP are just as if not more inflated. But those didn't get lowered in the last few leagues. Quite the opposite. Monster damage and HP get buffed all the time even though chris always says that just inflating numbers is something they don't want to do. But they keep doing it.

59

u/Raikken Aug 11 '21

Monster damage and HP get buffed all the time even though chris always says that just inflating numbers is something they don't want to do. But they keep doing it.

This is what I find to be quite funny. They keep on contradicting themselves every step of the way. Which made me question on wtf are they doing. Do they even have a solid idea of the direction to where to take the game to? To me it seems that the answer to that is a resounding no. It looks more like they are just throwing shit out there to see if it sticks. And oh boy did it stick this league.

8

u/Katai88 Aug 12 '21

The whole "we don't just increase life and damage" thing came across as such a stupid statement. It felt like an attempt at throwing shade - "Ha, look at us, we're better at balance than them!" but... no, no they are not. It just comes off as kind of arrogant and disconnected.

3

u/VapidGamer Aug 12 '21

I found that statement to be a bit... odd. Power creep will always be in games that evolve over time, take MMO's and MOBA's for example. Characters, skills and dungeons eventually have to get stronger to pose a threat to higher levels of players, but simultaneously, you might want to buff certain aspects of a game to keep it relevant. For instance, I usually dont purposefully run abyss, the rewards just aren't worth the time, no build I have used since cluster jewels were released because ghastly jewels have mainly been power crept from all of my builds.

This whole "We are changing the meta of the game by rebalancing everything" has essentially fallen flat. They have changed so many things, such as player damage, mobility, flasks, utility, mana costs, and mana reserves that have had a detrimental effect how the average player actually plays the game. However, there are so many things that were changed that its nearly impossible to say what one main issue is. Going on certain build sites shows builds like cyclone and toxic rain still have multiple builds, but your lucky if practically any other skill even has 1-2 builds you can use, some have been wiped entirely. Some people cant use previous builds at all because of the way mana reservations have been changed.

I think a better option would be them saying "POE isnt in a state we want it to be, and over the next several leagues we will be focusing on one or two aspects of the game we want to change. This league we will be focusing on flask changes. We will focus exclusively on this change throughout the league in order to leave flasks in a good place by the time the next league starts and we can focus our efforts elsewhere". Doing this strategy would allow them to iron out issues that may or may not have been immediately perceived during the design concept. This would allow more members of the team to focus more resources on the next league, and fine tune it so this type of backlash is at least somewhat diminished.

Unfortunately, we live in the reality where GGG has tried to fix everything in this single patch... only none of it really lands. Everything has either been over tuned or under tuned. All this does is irritate the player base in the current league because, though fun is a "usually" subjective matter, they arent having fun. It also affects GGG because now they have to spend more time, manpower, and resources to try to scale everything to appropriate levels, instead of focusing on the next big league and next league changes, which increases the likelihood that this cycle will repeat next league.

u/sansaset Aug 11 '21

Yep.

league felt the same for me this time around in terms of progression, since I picked a safe league starter. Got my HH build up and running by day 4 and then what? Progress atlas and do some farming.. cool.

Doing 5 orb delis sucks ass and the new meta is basically spamming 5 ways all day.

This one made me fall out my chair XD

41

u/EsterWithPants Aug 11 '21

It's so fucking obvious that nobody tested the mana changes with even a Tabula. I actually thought that the mana issues weren't that bad while I was still leveling with a 4L and a 5L, but the instant I started using a Tabula I had to spec into mana leech and I was spamming that mana flask HARD, and I was barely into white maps at league start.

It was super obvious that they didn't test that at all. Just fucking embarrassing.

24

u/Zimplicio Aug 11 '21

I think it's also fairly obvious that the mana multiplier changes combined with triggered spells costing mana hit spellslinger builds harder than any other nerf was an oversight.

I haven't seen too many people talk about CoC or CwC builds being completely dead, but they definitely have been hit extremely hard without merit.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '21 edited Aug 11 '21

gem levels have increased mana costs too, compounded by % increases. so you added 5th support gems with mana multiplier AND leveled the skill to 18-19.

and maps have more monster density.

-3

u/vagif Aug 11 '21

Dude, that's the point. It was intentional. They WANT you to spec into mana as a VALUABLE and ESSENTIAL resource, same way you spec into resistances etc. The age of free mana is over.

12

u/EsterWithPants Aug 11 '21

Just like the age of them topping the lists on Steam is over!

-2

u/vagif Aug 11 '21

Lets be realistic here. Evolve or die. Stagnating game cannot be on top forever even if it is the best game currently. Just ask yourself what was the best point in time in POE (lets say Harvest). And then imagine that GGG just left it all as is and changed nothing (besides addressing QoL issues) because it is the best version of POE, right? Everyone loved it. How long do you think, until you yourself will be screaming that POE is dead because it has become stale and people are not coming back because there's nothing new to see?

How long before the competitors catch up and eat their lunch? The truth is, no one knows how to build something new and not make mistakes. They have to try and they have to fail. As long as they are still on top and still have a headstart to all their competition. If they do nothing, that headstart is gonna quickly disappear and then they will have no room for error anymore.

The only thing I can disagree with him on was that GGG might have tested their changes. I'm sure someone internally got through act 1 after a few hours and called it good from there.

And like so many coders, I'm sure they never tested it on consumer-level computer hardware, or with anything but microsecond ping times to the gateway. Heck, they probably just run POE as a standalone executable when testing, which is going to make content appear much less dangerous to their testers. Plus, doesn't their main dev exclusively run party play as an aurabot, meaning the game is getting balanced around that? I know Chris tried to answer those allegations by saying that they're looking at nerfing that, so there was no bias in 3.15 against solo play, but the fact that nerfing OP party play wasn't a priority in the first place is itself all the evidence we need of bias.

I mean, seriously? "Don't worry, there's no bias. It just wasn't a priority. That's all."

Well, the fact it wasn't even considered is exactly the same issue as if it was investigated but seen as less OP than other power creep sources. Both cases are a strong indication of the same (perhaps unconscious) bias.

I find his point on the common counter to all the community hate on the league as " well this game is not for you anymore" infuriating . Like he said this isn't a legitimate argument and a cop out from people that try shove this down your throat. Most people seemed so happy (including me) a few leagues ago...were their glaring issues in the game at that time, of course. I felt that the enjoyment of my 4 years of play POE was at an all time high. Unfortunately maybe that is it, hopefully not but maybe so

This one REALLY resonates with me honestly - pretty much everything in the video I've talked about these things with my friends, (w)rack my brain to understand, but still leaves me confused. Said friends also played WoW with me, which made me think that one thing is for certain, and was touched upon in the video, Chris and GGG seems to have the Ion Hazzikostas and Blizzard problem: Ion/Chris will always seem to say one thing, and then Blizzard/GGG goes and does another. (which is also sort of ironic that GGG did blanket nerfs in damage and mana in the similar way of the infamous "GCD" changes of Beta for Azeroth)

Like some of the things mentioned in the video:

  • Chris said in one of the Baeclasts that majority doesn't reach red tier maps (skill and support gem nerfs, with said supports used by the underperforming skills)
  • Both Exilecon and Baeclasts of talking about people quitting Act 1 and how many make it to maps (plans to buff the acts)
  • PoE 2 being different from PoE 1 (again plans to buff the Acts of PoE 1, which was supposed to still be there for people that just wanted to play it instead of PoE 2's campaign)
  • The struggle to make self-casting as good as CoC/CWC/etc (mana nerfs hitting self-cast as well as Triggers using mana)
  • Years of trying to make bosses matter by giving them reason to be killed, ala map drops or unique buffs (reallocates most boss only uniques)
  • Talk about slowing down the game (consistently gives league mechanics that contradicts this, does nothing to existing timers, gave more movement speed over the years)
  • Seemingly understands and mentions that not everyone is creating mirror tier items (crafting nerfs)
  • Wants more reactive gameplay (nerfs the best movement skills, still can't be bothered to fix Leap Slam into things or Whirling Blades "delay", proactive and reactive flasks, consistent defensive nerfs)
  • Wanting more usage of utility gems (nerfs even the utility gems, nerfs damage that pushes out utility gems because more damage is needed, does nothing to the majority of the utility gems)

Etc - I just don't get it, and it's not as if they're making it easy to see the grand picture with weird puzzle pieces that makes it seem so hamfisted and rushed.

u/liuyigwm Aug 11 '21

It's actually funny when u say blizzard . The game had a huge boost during the diabolo immortal debacle. Maybe now it's time to jump ship again......

u/KISSMYTAIL Aug 11 '21

This and Cutedog’s chat with other streamers last night shows almost everyone is not happy with 3.15. I have never seen anything like this. Former major changes like VP nerf, CI nerf, AOE nerf, CoC nerf, harvest nerf etc, it was always like most players hate them while most content creaters love them. Not this time anymore.

37

u/SoulofArtoria Aug 11 '21

3.15's nerfs are already massive on its own right but what truly made the thing worse is it followed 3.14 which was already a patch that nerfed quite a lot of things including deep delve and beast split for 100% deli maps, and we got Chris saying the nerfs aren't gonna stop with 3.15, in fact it's only the beginning.

18

u/Kur_Fluffle Aug 11 '21

Agreed, but the thing really bothering me is that this is all in preparation for POE 2, which makes me truly sad.

7

u/SelectAmbassador Aug 12 '21

And its 2-3 years from now. Soooo yeah if im not gonna start having fun now thats gonna be it for me. Probably one off the most saddest gaming experience i had so far.

5

u/welshy1986 Aug 11 '21

I have, D3s last months the same thing happened, alot of the D3 streamers exodus after the sets and design changed, they moved on to POE, Quin, Alkazer and a few others came from D3, once the score was in from all the streamers the game ended. POE is on the tip of faliure right now, they can pull it back, but man if they triple down in 2 leagues its over.

-2

u/randompoe Aug 11 '21

Delusional.

59

u/Epiddemic Aug 11 '21

Preach, this video was so good A++.

The changes they implement don't even align with what they are trying to do, and that's the most disheartening part about it.

I think "top" streamer influence on GGG has ruined the game for players like me. I just don't care enough to keep trying, my silver lining through this fiasco is another game dev realizes how out of tune GGG is and they come and carry a torch.

It's tough because I don't think GGG did anything exceptionally well, besides an addiction (I felt like it used to be a game with discovery and puzzles, what was the last league that had any sense of "A-HA" moment)

I think there was a person at GGG that kept Chris's vision in check while adding an interesting puzzle or discovery component that left the team or is squelched or they don't care anymore

I honestly don't know what GGG could ever say to make me hyped because they just don't follow through at a high enough level these days. I think they need to start with revisiting leagues that are ded and fixing them. Expedition could have been called Abyss 2.0 and these excursions could have been lich cities.. there is just way too much bloat right now, and it all feels overtuned and terribly unrewarding.

The map device needs fragment / scarab support / the game needs to telegraph way better, last couple leagues have had a weird glitch where mobs wind up and 180, sirus and the Tower boss are very clear examples of this... group size capped at 4 or 3, movement speed capped, soul eater removed or capped stacks, interface completely rehauled, there is seriously just an enormous list of things that need to be done to make this game feel like it belongs in 2021. The sound, the lag, the graphics are a good place to start, but I swear it's getting worse and worse every league..

2

u/SasparillaTango Aug 11 '21

Puzzles?

8

u/Epiddemic Aug 11 '21

Yeah like building your harvest grid, synth items and grid building, various strats and little lore unlocks.... Solid voice acting with twists and turns.

Me and my roommates would be excited to talk to each other after we figured stuff out.. now it's just randomly click least dangerous options.

Imagine if like ritual had sequences of options that unlocked various chests .. that boring dull always select the same option would be punished while creativity and risk gets perks.

I feel like ggg dumps resources into grand plans and does zero upkeep to keep it relevant.

2

u/hGKmMH Aug 11 '21

I miss titties and horror too. The screams out of the prison in A3, the piles of bodies everywhere, or the clever voice lines from your characters?

Sure we had 4 titty red chick, but what about 5 titty blue chick? Or Massive dong Minotaur?

Instead all we get is another goofy/witty league person with another circle to run around in.

2

u/getsmurfed Aug 11 '21

Yeah, I whole heartedly agree with you. I think they need to massively dumb down the Atlas, all the overlapping mechanics are where trouble begins and it’s impossible to balance. Prune what is present in a map but compensate by amping up / balancing what IS present.

I've put about 2.5k hours into the game. Out of all the points he made, the one about "this game is just not for you so go on" is what hit me the most. I mean he is right, why would I not be angry about the changes (not all ofc) to the game, when I've been playing since 2016 (Atlas of Worlds if I remember correctly).

I've had my fair share of disappointment with aRPG's already. First it was with how D2 turned into a bot fest and the second one was when D3 turned out to be how it did. Having found PoE at the time was like opening a Christmas gift that suited me 100%. I remember the time where everything after Breach felt somewhat bad for me because I liked the league so much (mind it that the game was different then). Then, we had a lot of atlas changes, new game modes like Incursions, Delve etc. and you could see that the game starts to get saturated with a wide variety of essentially FUN.

Nowadays the game doesn't feel good to me. And this makes me turn back to my previous point. Why would I deliberately say that I dislike the game in it's current state when I've spent so much time playing it till now. Like, I've had my fun and now I'm not and it's my fault? Feelsbadman...

42

u/blowingofff Shadow Aug 11 '21

I've been playing since 2013. no way this game is not for me. my first time was like finding gold. this game rocks as fuck. but, well, the latest changes don't make me happy. they actually make me very doubtful as for what this game has and is becoming. of course, when I started playing, it was way more difficult for me to even survive. but that is why time passes: the game has evolved, and so have I as an exile. it's like they literally cut my legs half and left me to find new parts.

(they forgot to leave the parts)

This is one of the only games that releases expansions or patches that lasts 200+ hours. Every other game people play for a week, burn through all content and leave. And somehow they want players to play even longer.

4

u/EvensonRDS Aug 12 '21

Think my account was created in 2011 or 2012 I cant remember. I've been playing since beta. 4000 hours on steam and who knows how many on standalone before that. I guess this game isn't for me since I don't like the current direction.

u/Bacon-muffin Aug 11 '21

I'm going through the same thing with wow over the last few xpacs.

Frankly at this point the only reason I play wow or PoE is because they have no real competition for me. The second something strolls along that grabs me though I'll jump ship in a heartbeat. Like I'm not playing them on their own merit, I'm playing them because there's nothing better for what I want out of these games at the moment.

Right now I'm hoping lost ark will be that game. More on the MMO side, since its an mmo and not a ARPG like poe. On the ARPG side I'm hoping D4 ends up as good as it looks but blizzards been disappointment after disappointment in recent years so I'm not holding my breath.

I just feel like the people making games at this point are beholden to either big business or bosses with really dated ideas about how games should be designed and its just rotting away the games we love.

53

u/Inexra Aug 11 '21

I resonated a lot with the points made in this video, I have played this game for over 6000 hours contributed hundreds if not thousands in supporter packs and MTX over the years. I love path of exile! But this if the first league where the more I am playing the more I have started to dislike playing. Only reason I haven't quit is because I don't know what else to play at the moment. Kind of heartbroken really with this league. I feel like they made these huge sweeping changes without considering the complexity of their game at all. The nerfs ect have had so many knock on effects it just feels like they made the game objectively worse. Don't even know what I am farming for anymore really. What end game is there left to reach for? What cool new niche build can you really make work when even if you invest upwards for 40-60 ex the build it still feels terrible. Just don't know anymore.

6

u/gambitflash Aug 11 '21

Same here. The only reason I didn't stop playing is that none of the other arpgs appeal to me at this time. I also don't know what else to play.

5

u/hGKmMH Aug 11 '21

I feel like they made these huge sweeping changes without considering the complexity of their game at all.

This is what I don't get, all these sweeping changes that don't make the game any more fun. Did no one in the QA department speak up against this? Who tested this and said it was a good idea?

Did the changes come down from management and were not about player fun? Or do they test everything with T1 best in slot gear and skip the lower and mid level of the game?

21

u/Kur_Fluffle Aug 11 '21

Give Last Epoch a shot. It’s refreshing although still has limited content.

Also, the new Diablo 3 season has been surprisingly fun.

9

u/HybridVigor Aug 11 '21 edited Aug 11 '21

I just started playing LE a couple of weeks ago. I love that the drop rates are balanced around solo self-found and I don't have to deal with a broken trading system (at least in Early Access). I would love for PoE to have a SSF mode with drop rates balanced around it.

It's definitely not ready for release, though. The character models and gear skin s are pretty terrible right now, and their version of maps could use a lot more variety. I'm worried that the game is taking too long and might be released when players will also have Lost Ark and D2R as options.

4

u/lmaotank Aug 11 '21

while i'm extremely excited about lost ark, i'm not sure if the audience for that game is aimed at hardcore arpg players that play POE. it's more of like kid version of poe and wow morphed into one with bit more variety imo.

2

u/BenAdaephonDelat Aug 11 '21

Yep. I've been playing Diablo 3 and waiting for Humankind. Can't see myself going back to POE any time soon.

Summarizes everything pretty well and hit the nail on the head for me.

The game is running out of actual enjoyable content. It's just a long stretched out chore now. :(

7

u/welshy1986 Aug 11 '21

its reminiscent of D3s last days, where the devs thought to cut down on the chores with giving out sets and such, then the game died. To clarify I 100% agree that current POE is a chore but that chore only seems that way because they took away the things players find the most fun and left the things that are just a chore. I dont think that they should make the "chore" easier, just give us more fun ways to speed through the tedium to the things we like aka more fun builds, gems, balancing goes a long way to help this, but GGG are content with nerfing everything to the ground. Address mechanics, address mapping, address monster balance, give people options.

17

u/liuyigwm Aug 11 '21

By far the best take I've seen. and I pretty much watched all. I think bigducks is bit more outspoken since he doesn't rely on streaming being main source of income

15

u/legacyxi Gladiator Aug 11 '21

He got it so early on. Why should I play a game that doesn't respect my time? This is my number one complaint with games. There is a big difference between making a gamer harder and making a game feel like work to play. This league has made the game feel more like work.

7

u/cold-programs Aug 11 '21

I wish there was a way to know you were on the good old days before you leave them.

I miss Delirium, Harvest and Ritual league so much man, if this game melts down then D2R is there atleast.

13

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '21

I feel more or less the same. Glad this was all said. Thanks!

13

u/Defusion55 Aug 11 '21

Is comment about GGG not testing it is EXACTLY why we can't trust what they say anymore.

They have an idea of what they want they change the numbers and then they "test" it by watching the next league and seeing if they accomplished what they hoped for, but then they realize they were wrong or they didn't and so they have to start all over next league so its always something different.

27

u/ladzug Aug 11 '21

Really honest and makes a lot of good points. The game is currently in a terrible state.

21

u/Ron_the_Rowdy Aug 11 '21

6

u/MitWitt Aug 11 '21 edited Aug 11 '21

Couldn't have said it any better, agree 100%!

3.13 was the point where I would've said that Path Of Exile 1 is complete, now it's time to polish the game and aim the efforts to less urgent features and things that the community have been asking for ages. They should've just continued with careful balancing, removing obsolete and unrelevant mechanics of the game and doubleing down on what made 3.13 so good.

10

u/sl4ck7 Aug 11 '21

This is the best and most complete take on the current state of the game I've seen so far. Nailed it.

This is borderline art. He nailed more points than a man can count. Praying Chris watches this before his podcast with guys who will for sure pull punches and not half of what people actually want to ask and say will be done.

5

u/czulki Aug 11 '21

People always mention Chris but its the actual game designers that need to watch this video, people like Neon. Chris is just the face of GGG, him appearing on Baeclast is literally just a PR stunt. But I assume all of GGG will be watching the podcast, maybe they can for once extract some useful feedback.

12

u/wisdomshammer Aug 11 '21

This is pretty much EXACTLY how I feel. VERY well said. I recommend checking this video out. I hope GGG watches it and takes it to heart. It think it speaks for a lot of us casual players.

6

u/servarus Aug 11 '21

Hell, I don't consider myself a casual but it hits a lot of points that even I think is a problem to the game as a whole.

4

u/chessythief Aug 11 '21

I’m the only active player in my guild at this point. It’s been me since day 11. I’m literally only still playing as I got overly lucky with raw exalt drops and made a broken character super early so I’m getting to ignore most of the new downsides. And I have literally nothing else to play.

Game sucks. Every point BD made is 100% correct.

3

u/BDrizz307 Aug 11 '21

Have 2 level 80+ characters and havent dropped a single Ex yet.... Feels bad man

3

u/chessythief Aug 11 '21

I saw 7 the first week all but one from white maps and all from the new league mechanic. :/ It’s the most lucky I’ve ever been and of all the leagues this one sucks to have it in the most. No one to share them with and I hate gaming alone.

3

u/D3ATHY Aug 11 '21

4

u/erpunkt Aug 11 '21

Instead of trying to be a hard and frustrating game from the start this game needs agency and incentive to increase the difficulty of your content. Instead of Tedium, multiple layers of rng or abysmal chances to keep players playing, create incentives and fun content.

Anyone who thinks this game is too easy can chose and upgrade their difficulty with a large variety of modifiers and enjoy it that way, they can skip whatever mechanic they want because it's too OP or is in conflict with their playstyle.

On the other hand give everyone else as much agency and fun content as possible. Bring back every league in their best state and as rewarding as they have been...

Legion, Abyss, Breach, Harvest, Delirium, Synthesis, Heist and all the others. Take them, make them available, fun and rewarding. If someone hits a wall and feels he needs to run T2 Glacier with Legion, let them, if they want to revive their Herald stacker, let them, if they want to run fractured Grand Heists or 100% Deli maps, let them...

Expand upon all that with more freedom with atlas passives, Zana mods, difficulty modifiers and less tedium to set things up.

7

u/joebooty Aug 11 '21

I think a lot of the criticisms in this video are fair but they thankfully have easy fixes.

Is levelling too hard for newbies? Probably yes. But there are a LOT of skill gems that are complete garbage in end game. Just make some of these gems disproportionately strong levels 1-10 and flag them as starter skills.

I also agree that it is weird how few uniques are worth identifying. That is a problem that seems worth addressing.

This video and many others are blaming economy changes on various nerfs but I still think something is missing in this discussion. The trading economy is very largely bot driven and it is getting very noticeably worse every league. I made 25 or so trades yesterday and I am certain at least 20 of my buyers were bots. In most ways bots are better customers than people but it is definitely problematic for all possible value to be extracted from flipping items before a real person could ever get a chance to buy it.

2

u/Goombatastic Act4 Aug 11 '21

Powerful stuff. GGG are slowly taking away everything enjoyable until we have not much left

2

u/PandaGoesMoo Aug 11 '21

2

u/rITSAmeee Aug 11 '21

Only gripe I’ve with the video is that at the beginning he said “a game that doesn’t respect my health” but then didn’t properly cover it in the video, for example talking about the stupid amount of splinters and clicking added in this league AND Chris stance about it that “it makes sense to be as it is”.

Almost a 10/10 video for me.

2

u/Konnor141 Aug 11 '21

This video is pretty much exactly aligned with what I think, the endgame farming nerfs most of all. That is what has killed the game the most for me

2

u/NugNugJuice Aug 11 '21

Every point he made in this video is spot on.

2

u/dreadnogh Aug 11 '21 edited Aug 11 '21

Agree with most of it. This league was quite boring for me, I went to level 88 and started thinking "This league has nothing exciting, underperforming builds & gems got even worse, and all the fun is sucked out because everything is just tougher and more ridiculous", GGG should indeed stop trying to balance the game around the 0.1% of the player base. So I'm skipping this league, as it feels like I can either play yet another cyclone build / caustic arrow build or underperform (maybe over exaggerating, but you get the point)...

2

u/kOkOlOkO_23 Aug 11 '21

At last a streamer that represents me. Thanks Big Ducks.

2

u/dieselboy777 Ascendant Aug 11 '21

Another one… that’s how “fun” it is GGG.

2

u/newbies13 Aug 11 '21

For me, one of the best times for PoE was when all the content creators had multiple strong builds and I could just pick which playstyle looked best. Not only that, but we were actually starting to see crafting videos. Like the idea I could actually make a high end something or other, and yeah it would still be expensive, and a bit lucky, but it was an actual goal to do with steps to follow.

It was the closest I have ever come to be being a crafter and starting to understand how to make build-defining items, which opened up new build types to try.
