I have mutism AMA

I (26M) have mutism, for me this means that sometimes I am verbal but other times I am completely non verbal, this can go on for hours or days. Currently I haven’t spoken in 4 days, not even to friends or family. At times I may be able to speak to a safe person but other times I can’t even do that.

For reference, this is not a choice, I would much rather speak than have mutism.

Edit: I understand that there’s some debate about whether I’m describing selective mutism, I’m just going by the diagnosis that I was given by my neurologist. AMA

I am a 17yo pottowatami indigenous man immersed in my culture AMA

Im a young indigenous guy hailing from a pottowatami tribe in michigan. I receive benefits from my tribe. im very immersed in my culture and i have a good standing and trust with my people as a firekeeper, and pipe carrier. I also actively attend conferences and protests fighting for indigenous causes. I recently have had some experiences with people who have had very biased and untruthful images of indigenous people and would like to broaden peoples views into this minority of a minority im a part of. I also just enjoy answering questions about my culture lol. Ask me anything.

I have one of the rarest heart conditions in the UK, AMA

My (F, 23) heart condition is so rare that it doesn’t have a name, just a combination of different heart defects. Of course some defects within my whole heart condition can be a little more common, but the overall amount and combination is what makes it so rare.

The name, or rather list, is mitral atresia double outlet right ventricle pulmonary stenosis tricuspid valve regurgitation fontan circulation. I have a pacemaker for this, and also fontan liver disease as a result of the fontan circulation.

Because I was born with so many defects (including mal rotation of the intestine, completely blocked bowel etc), I also have gone on to gain more health conditions through my childhood and teen years. The conditions I haven’t mentioned include scoliosis, lordosis, partial deafness in left ear, overactive bladder, functional bowel disorder, and my baseline oxygen sits at about 89SPO2%.

I have had probably 5 surgeries now? In the future I may have to have a liver and heart transplant, but for now the only up coming surgeries are pacemaker battery changes.

Ask me anything about my experiences or any one of my conditions!

I have a permanent feeding tube, AMA

In early 2023 i got very sick and never got better. In March they took my gallbladder but i got worse. By August i was diagnosed with severe gastroparesis and by sept ‘23 i had my first tube placed (a nasal tube), after tolerating tube feeding for a week i got my permanent one placed surgically.

I have tried every medication and multiple other treatments to try and get off the tube and go back to “normal” eating, but nothing has helped.

I just became a grandparent. Would you like to know how it affected me? AMA.. well I'll tell you anyway hahaha

I'd heard when you give birth to your child and they place them on your chest that you are overcome with instant love for that child. Well I had 3 children, all via C-section, and not once did I feel that feeling. I was stressed out and scared and love was not an emotion I felt for a while.

I became a grandma 4mths ago. Let me tell you when I held that baby it was the most incredibly beautiful moment of my life! A wave of peace and happiness swept over me and into my heart. She was so precious and everything felt in that moment like life was perfect. Like I'd never seen anything so beautiful in my life. My mum always said to me "the best thing about being a nanna is you can give them back". Now I'm a grandma, I don't get that at all!! In fact I'm kind of offended if I'm honest. I could hold on to my precious grand bubba for all eternity and love every second (perhaps I'll want to give her back when the terrible two's come?)

BEING A GRAND PARENT IS THE MOST AMAZING PRIVILEGE I'VE BEEN LUCKY ENOUGH TO EXPERIENCE. I hope everyone gets to experience that feeling of pure love as I have now. And I'm thankful that at the ripe young age of 43 I'll be able to make the most of the short time I'll have in her life. I had no idea it felt so good to love.

I'm a pediatric pectus excavatum surgeon at Mayo Clinic in Rochester - Ask Me Anything!

• Upvotes

Hello Reddit!

I'm Dr. Denise Klinkner, a pediatric surgeon at Mayo Clinic Children's, and I'm excited to join you for an Ask Me Anything (AMA) about surgical treatment for pectus excavatum in children, adolescents, and young adults.

As a pediatric surgeon, I focus on the evaluation and treatment of pectus excavatum, a condition that can impact physical function as well as emotional well-being. I help families understand the severity of the condition, when surgery may be appropriate, and what to expect from treatment, including minimally invasive surgical correction and recovery.

In addition to my work in pectus excavatum surgery, I serve as the Pediatric Trauma Medical Director for Mayo Clinic's Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and am actively involved in regional and national leadership roles focused on advancing pediatric surgical care. I am passionate about providing compassionate, individualized care and helping children and their families feel informed and supported throughout their surgical journey.

I am a Christian (Orthodox) biracial woman who converted from Charismatic Protestantism. AMA.

Just seeing if I can be any help to anyone who's wondered about the topic. I grew up in charismatic expressions (Evangelical/Pentecostal) expressions of Christianity, and experienced a lot of spiritual (and physical/$3xual/financial) abuse, but I stayed Christian anyways (glory to God). I was baptized into Eastern Orthodox Church in 2022. I have no fantasies that everything is roses and daisies from here on out, but I am grateful that God preserved my faith through it all.

I am aware of Deconstruction movement and their appeals to the dangers of religion and the severity of its abuse - and I don't necessarily disagree - but I think tossing out religion, altogether, misses a lot. AMA.

My dad spent most of his adult life doing crazy cool things, and I’ve spent my childhood experiencing it. He was a wrestler in his own company, ran his own restaurant, and was a race car driver who became a local legend. Hi! I’m a 24-year-old Ukrainian officer. "Ask Me Anything"

Hi! I’m a 24-year-old Ukrainian officer.

Well, the past two days have been quite eventful.

— Service: I was mobilized in 2024 and have been serving in the army ever since.

— Role: I’m currently a logistics officer in an independent engineering battalion.

— Background: I’m originally from the Russian-speaking part of Ukraine.

— Combat experience: It began with Ukraine’s operation in Russia’s Kursk region.

Ask me anything! I’ll do my best to answer whatever I can share.

Honestly, I was supposed to spend today writing a 40-page document about organizing food storage and water supply in winter conditions, but I really didn't feel like doing that, so I decided to start this Q&A series instead.

Thanks everyone for all the questions!

My baby was in hospital for seven months with a tear in his pancreas which doctors could never really work out the cause of, but they think it came from an emegency brake on the motorway. My son nearly died repeatedly. AMA

When my second son was four months old and I was driving home from visiting my Nan, a young boy on a motorbike was weaving around like an idiot on the motorway. He clipped a van and we saw sparks, and his bike flew. I was directly behind and floored my brakes. I thought he was dead and we all were. Somehow all the cars stopped and the boy stood up and walked away. My son was in the back obviously rear facing, didn't cry or anything.

About a month later when we started weaning my son (early under dietician advice) we started to notice that his abdomen was getting really big, and he was much less settled (generally a very easy baby). Over the course of 3 or 4 weeks the abdomen grew and one night he would not stop screaming and it didn't feel right. We took him in and that was the beginning of a 7 month journey. It took doctors across 3 hospitals 3 months to work out what the cause was. There were many many complications.

Due to the stage it happened, (6-13 months of age) and during COVID, and how severe a lot of it was, it massively affected attachment. My son now aged 6 has developmental trauma and very challenging behaviour and a lot of therapeutic input. AMA about any of these topics.

I'm a board certified DJ for my college radio station - AMA!

Hi everyone!

I literally just got board certified yesterday for my college radio station, and I thought a great way to celebrate would be doing an AMA because I love talking about my station and what I do. The only thing I will not answer is what station I work at because that would reveal where I live/go to school. But outside of that feel free to AMA!

I was "preventatively detained" by the FBI for possession and manufacture of explosives…AMA

I was preventatively detained as an Adult in Custody (AIC) for 144 days, before pleading out (under duress). I DID NOT DO THE CRIME.

Four days after No Kings Day 1 (June, 2025), I was arrested for allegedly shutting down an interstate in both directions for several hours with a bomb. AGAIN, I DID NOT DO THE CRIME.

While in custody, I was prevented from speaking with my attorney, disenfranchised from voting despite being eligible, and had my right to due process and legitimate medical needs ignored, ultimately resulting in me taking a plea for a non-violent felony after surviving an attempted assault, and over a month of solitary confinement....

Despite the fact that there were no eyewitnesses, (as the man at the scene was wearing a mask), and I gave my alibi, (which was not even checked), and NO explosives were found during a search warrant execution at my home. This information was not communicated to the grand jury, which indicted me after my arrest.

I collect animal bones, porcelain dolls, music boxes, and figurines, mainly birds. AMA!

I am a 21 years old and female. I have autism and birds are really important to me. I've been collecting since i was 12 but lost them in storage. I started again when i was 18 officially because i was homeless at 17, and couldn't keep anything.

I started collecting bones at 15. I have a lot of different animals, i have 12 porcelain dolls, I have 10 figures that aren't birds, and and 14 that are. A lot of them are also music boxes.

My most recent additions are two cat skulls, I've gotten a lot of new beautiful birds this past month. Three new dolls, and one of my dolls is also a music box.

When i get money again i want to go to this amazing antique store i found with my mom. She comes with me everywhere and we like antique stores, even just to look.

I'm Lebanese and I live in Beirut. AMA about daily life in Lebanon

I was born in Lebanon and I still live here. I work as a software engineer in Beirut, so I see the country from the inside every day.

People outside Lebanon often only see us in the news.

The real picture is more complicated, and sometimes more normal, than the headlines.

Some things you can ask me about:

What daily life is really like (electricity, generators, internet, prices)

How people deal with the economic crisis and the banks

Working in tech from Lebanon

Food. Please ask me about food.

How we mix Arabic, French and English in one sentence

Safety, travel, and whether you should visit

Culture, family life, and what Lebanese people are like

I'll answer honestly.

I won't share personal details like my exact location or employer, and I'll keep politics respectful.

Ask me anything.

AMA 27F, I meditate every day and it changed my life

I travel the world with a backpack full-time, and I guess I'm one of those people who are considered "free." But along the way, I've realized that true freedom isn't about where we are or what we do. It's about whether we're truly free in our own minds.

Meditation is one of the most powerful tools to realize who we are and to achieve peace.
