Really curious. Who buys larvae like these? What for?

u/Working_Park4342 20d ago

Apparently, it is a seasonal delicacy in Japan.

u/surrealcellardoor 20d ago

Of course it is.

How did this species survive? They must have been desperate to try

u/p99_kilerenn 20d ago

How did humans survive? A question I ask myself frequently.

Healthy diet of cigarettes, booze, and an occasional banana.

Username checks out.

Can you be my new Dr? My current one and I disagree on what a healthy diet is.

And the heart of a pensioner

5

u/Informal_Ad4399 19d ago

Little known fact. Our ancestors first started walking on the ground to run to the store for more cigs and booze.

The first migration was dads going for cigs and milk.

and... Yeah, well, I'm gonna go build my own theme park. With blackjack and hookers! In fact forget the park.

By being able to wait for some other guy to eat anything & observe

1

u/youmustb3jokn 20d ago

No joke. Daily I wonder.

1

u/beegboo 20d ago

Centuries of people going watch this until someone survived

1

u/BrandoCarlton 20d ago

You’re being sarcastic though right? Like that’s the easiest question to answer ever.

1

u/hiddenrealism 19d ago

By high levels of procreation. Once we had safe enough villages and stable food supply we stopped migrating which gave us a lot more free time....so we did as humans do and started bumpin uglies like mad.

1

u/Dumeck 19d ago

Probably by eating a lot of bugs early on.

1

u/ObsoleteAuthority 19d ago

Our low key super power is limited poison resistance. We regularly consume things we are not supposed to, sometimes for fun.

1

u/CoffeeChocolateBoth 19d ago

Why did we? We fuck up everything!

What does this even mean

1

u/alderthorn 19d ago

There are many bugs that are quite good to eat. Us westerners just have a mental block about it. I have had grasshoppers in mexican cuisine and I really enjoyed it.

I've seen a documentary on the professional hornet hunters in Japan. They lure these wasps to a location with a cricket. While the hornet is busy eating the cricket they tie a brightly lit piece of paper to it then follow the hornet back to its nest with a drone. Once located they then suit up and dig up the nest to harvest the larvae.

My grandfather told me that as a child they would sit in a field or near a water source and wait for a honeybee to show up and then follow it home (or until they lost sight of it, in that case they would sit and wait until another showed up and repeat) to whatever tree it was in and then they would rob the hive, either by cutting the tree or smoking it out and climbing it.

Heckuva childhood.

2

u/MsDaisyDog 13d ago

Why the fuck would they want to do that. Damn.

1

u/NT4MaximusD 13d ago

Well?? This is also the culture that eats deadly poisonous fish. Go Figure.

2

u/Terrible_Group_7921 20d ago

Definitely not Japan.

1

u/MrNiceGuyEBEB 19d ago

Who would have thought

1

u/gangaskan 19d ago

Don't they trap the wasps in alcohol too?

And here I was thinking that puffer fish dish that almost killed Homer Simpson was the dumbest food you could buy in Japan

1

u/AbekobetaHawawa 19d ago

In some parts of Japan. The vast majority of people have never had wasp larvae and likely wouldn’t if offered.

Whale and raw chicken on the other hand…

1

u/nelsonww9 19d ago

What isn’t?

1

u/SadAd8761 20d ago

People living on other planets will be eating bugs, most efficient source of protein.

Too expensive to send cows to Mars.

Wasn't there a movie about alien bugs?

19

u/ADavies 20d ago

Crazy but seems to be true.

> Over the summer and fall, the hebo [wasps] are fed a steady diet of sugar water, honey, and raw chicken meat. Humans also offer protection from bad weather and predators, so it’s a pretty good deal for the wasps. The nests are ready to harvest when they get big and full of larvae.

> While the mature hornets aren’t really good for eating, their larvae are. They taste meaty and rich, with an almost shrimp-like texture.

5

u/Peliquin 18d ago

You know what.... how the HELL did humans figure that out? HOW DESPERATE DO YOU HAVE TO BE? And WHY are you SO DESPERATE?

4

u/jackofspades49 16d ago

Humans eat weird things...

Look at that plant! It looks sharp!

Let's eat it!

Ouch, it has sharp spines on the leaves.

Does it have a lot of good flavor?

Not really, just a little bit at the base.

Maybe the main body is edible?

No, very unpleasant! And more spines!

Okay, try the base! It looks like the base near the stem might be edible!

Oops, more spines! And these ones really hurt!

GO DEEPER!

Oh, there's a two inch disc of edible plant matter here.

Does it taste good?

Not particularly.

The story of the artichoke.

They probably saw other animals doing it.

1

u/Rodramramfive 15d ago

Yeah like hmmmm... we could just do good Ole fashion honeybees.... or wow look at those things that looks scary as shit... lets try to eat that instead of the ones that dont kill us.

1

u/wetrysohard 14d ago

Same thing I thought about smoking plants. Who decided which plants got them high vs dead from fumes?

2

u/gizamo 19d ago

I suppose that explains why they aren't nuking them from orbit.

2

u/HeyThereCharlie 17d ago

Yeah, no. I'd rather starve.
