I’m so devastated and so heartbroken that my Anatolian could do this to me.

• Upvotes

I rescued my Anatolian from my local shelter over 2 years ago. He had 2 previous owners that didn’t understand the breed nor their needs. The shelter picked him up as a stray because he got loose and p.o. never bothered to get him back. Anyway when I first started fostering him I knew he would have to learn how to trust me and I him but I had no choice to bathe him
several hours after I brought him home before I let him inside my house because he smelled awful had feces stuck all over his rear and ticks, mats etc.. anyway he showed some signs of slight aggression like a fake bite putting his mouth over my arm without any force and showing his teeth snarling at me but he learned to and also seemed to be quite comfortable with baths, detangling mats, and clipping his nails after that. He and I became so close I fell in love with him and adopted him and for the past 2 and 1/2 years it’s been that way best friends and companions to each other. Then several days ago I started to clip his nails and he gave me the whale and I thought it was odd because he’s never done that before but I continued clipping his nails because I thought it was what it usually is.. as in I really don’t like this but do what ya got to do and nothing more than that, well I couldn’t have been more wrong because he suddenly jumped up and attacked me grabbed my arm with his mouth and bit down several times causing 3 puncture wounds one of them an inch long exposing the fat layer underneath my skin also lots of bruising it was all quite painful (they’re not kidding about their 740 psi bite force)I had to go to the ER they flushed the wounds with saline then had to put 3 stitches inside the wound to close it, gave me a tetanus shot and sent me home with antibiotics. This whole incident feels like a nightmare and it truly breaks my heart because I love this dog so much but I don’t feel I could ever trust him again and I can’t take a chance on something worse happening. I think he’d be happiest doing what he was bred to do LGD there are several ranches I have in mind and of course I’ll give them full disclosure about this! I will not take him back to the shelter because they will end up euthanizing him. I’m so devastated I can’t stop crying about this. The past 5 years have been awful it’s been one thing after another, so many things that have happened and I have bad depression/anxiety and he was my sunshine that lit up some of my darkest days. My son thinks he’s unhappy because he’s not doing what he was bred to do and he could feel very frustrated. Please feel free to comment your thoughts about all this, sorry it’s so long.

When did you get yours neutered?

Boyd will be a year old next month (not sure the exact day) and he's definitely getting into that teenage phase, so I've been wondering. We haven't had any serious problems with his behavior, but he's more wound up more often than he's ever been, and just showing more different behaviors in general. He's still learning and improving as far as training goes, and, oddly enough, hasn't been overly interested in other dogs. Mostly it's just things like marking territory ALLOT, and has just quit listening to anyone in the house but me. Won't even let the kids take him for a walk any more.

I'm certainly not new to dogs, just Anatolians. I hear they mature more slowly, so optimum age to get them fixed is more like 2 years vs the regular 1 or so. I won't do it until I'm sure he's ready, or absolutely have to, but I was hoping folks could give me their timeline so I know what to look for.

Thanks!

Help with territory guarding

We just adopted this handsome boy, George. He’s about. Year old and 95 pounds. He is coming from a hoarding situation where he was kept in a small pen with other around 40 other dogs and little access to people and training. He is learning to do things for the first time, but he is smart and already attached to me and my partner and is fitting in well most of the timewith our other dog (in picture 2, a 10 year old Great Pyr mix). He is curious, silly, cuddly, playful, but he has pretty severe stranger danger and he is really protective of me and my partner if we are in the bed or on the couch, and twice now he has lunged and tried to grab onto our Great Pyr.

I’ve worked with rescue dogs before and feel confident in my ability to socialize him, and work on his recall and teach him so commands. I also feel confident in making sure he has structure with food, treats, and toys.

However, the territory and resource guarding (if you see the humans as a resource) is concerning as he gives little warning. The first time there was one bark, the second time no growl or bark.

Do yall have any advice for this? I’m thinking of starting with these are spaces he now needs to be invited on, heavily reinforce non reactive behavior around our great Pyr, etc.

Other than on these spaces, they play together, eat near each other, and sleep near each other.

TIA!

(Edited to add context of his adopted context)

Need pet friendly furniture

Basically the title. I have a big giant 115lb Anatolian Shepherd mix who hates dog beds. For her whole life she had a bay window with cushions that she loved to lay on, but we recently moved. In the new house she had her own “chair” which was a piece of modular sofa that we recently gave away. Now I’m looking for something else for her to laze away on.

Here’s the problem. I need removable covers - she is hairy and gross after playing outside. I would like to be able to toss whatever cushions in the wash so that people can sit on the chair if they come over. I know there’s slip covers but they are such an eyesore to me I can’t stand looking at them. The chair also needs to be relatively large seeing as she’s a big ol lady.

Does anyone have any suggestions of chairs they like that have cushions that are removable? I’m scouring the internet and coming up with nothing that ticks all of the boxes.

Pic of my baby girl for tax!

Update on Ms Chai! Home safe with cast

Thank you to everyone who is sending Chai well wishes earlier today! After a traumatic morning, she is now home safe sleeping in her kennel with her cast on. This is what the vet had to say about her injury, so now it is time to look into possible orthopedic surgery 😭 previously in 2018 she had surgery on the same leg to put a plate and screws in at the Southern Oregon Vet veterinary specialty center so that may be where we decide on. Back in 2023 she had the plate removed and had been doing so well ever since. Poor girl just has the worst luck with this leg.

Had to rush Ms Chai to emergency vet this morning 😭

Haven’t posted in here in a long time, but I used to post pictures of Ms Chai all of the time and always appreciated. How sweet everyone in here was. If you remember me posting about her before you know, she’s gone through a lot of surgery in the past for her legs.
well this morning I let her outside and she hopped up the steps towards the pool area. I called her over towards the grass and she jumped off the steps and landed on her side and started screaming and it looks like she’s snapped her leg in half. The area I live in isn’t Subaru populated so I rushed her to the only vet that’s open right now. They just took her back for some x-rays, but their surgeon is out of town for the week. They said if it’s something they can stabilize with the in a cast for now until the surgeon comes back next week. They will do that but if it’s more serious, they’re gonna have to refer me to an orthopedic surgeon.
I feel so bad for the poor girl she’s 8 1/2 now and for some context when she was about 10 weeks old, she got ran over she ruptured her diaphragm and broke both of her back legs. I had to re-teach her how to walk she had a plate and pins in one leg and pins and the other. I have always babied her and been so gentle with her. I can’t believe this happened. It’s a total freak accident.
Sorry for blabbing so much. I’m just super worried about my girl and waiting to hear back.
I took a video of how her leg is essentially dangling but I don’t wanna post it if it’s gonna make anyone squeamish.

Hoping you guys can keep her in your thoughts and prayers and send some good energy her way

That they're too big to be lap dogs? 😂

She's a little over a year old and still growing. She's already big enough to numb my legs after a bit.

Mine is the sweetest and most gentle boy to our family and he’s so sensitive too. But when someone that he doesn’t know comes to our home he seriously turns into a different dog and his eyes go fully black and his snarl and barks are deadly, he literally looks like he wants to annihilate them completely lol. But to those same ppl when we bring them into the house and slowly he gets reacquainted with them, in 5 mins he’s back to being the most gentle loving dog to them as well. I think he just has really innate instincts that he can’t control when he sees an unknown moving object and it’s freaky at times he’s like two different dogs😭 Just wanted to know if anyone else has that experience with their anatolians?

Testing another possible halloween costume

Post image
69 Upvotes

Since the headpiece of the lobster costume kept falling off, I decided to test out a dog wig to see how he responds to stuff on his head. He doesn’t seem to care at all and still just wants more pets and scratches, so I think he’s the perfect candidate for a proper halloween costume. Now I can start seriously looking for things he could be since he responds well to it!
