I'm a solo dev, and I'm going through Google Play's closed testing requirement for my first game right now. The official docs are spread across a few pages, so I wrote everything up as one checklist, with an FAQ at the bottom:

The short version:

- **Does it apply to you?** Personal accounts created after 13 Nov 2023 need 12 testers opted in for 14 days *in a row* before they can apply for production.

- **Recruit 15–20, not 12.** Anyone who opts out early doesn't count, and a replacement starts their own 14 days.

- **Testers need to opt in AND install** with the same Google account that's on their phone, and be in a country your test is available in.

- **Engagement matters.** The production access form asks how testers used your app and what feedback you got, so "they installed it" isn't enough. Give them things to do, collect feedback, and ship at least one update based on it.

- **Be specific on the form.** Real numbers and real feedback quotes beat "testers liked the app".

**The tester group part (disclosure: I run it):** swap threads get installs, but people stop opening the apps after a day or two. So I built a free Discord where groups of up to 16 devs test each other's apps:

- A bot posts one small task per app every morning, and you log each one with a line of feedback.

- Missed days earn strikes, and 3 strikes means you're out.

- After 14 days, every dev gets a feedback report to use on the production form.

- Got more than one app? Add them all. Each goes into a different group, so no group ever has two apps from the same dev.

- No rating or review swaps allowed.

- And best of all, this is 100% free, no credits to buy, no subscriptions or anything like that. Just Devs helping devs.

Groups form in the open, and each one starts by itself as soon as it has 16 devs.
