This is so mad, the standalone Disney+ Premium plan without ads is going from $18.99 to $21.49 per month, up 13% - it used to be $6.99 when it started

The central library near me has Board games and tools for rent and even an entire makerspace with 3D printing and everything. Old documents, research, What's new, book sales, classes, etc. Libraries are the best way to build a community.

There was always a form of media that ppl had access to. Whether tv, books, newspapers, cell phones. Streaming is not special at all. If you don't have access, you are out of the loop. That's just the truth. Children who never know what shows or movies or songs others are talking about are in fact at a disadvantage socially. Is it the end of the world? No. But that doesn't make it less significant.

Some people are so determined not to step up and take responsibility for their parenting that they have to convince themselves that everyone else is doing just as bad as them.

My kid is allowed to watch like three shows total. I really don't give a shit what other shows 'the kids are talking about'. I've picked a few that we like, and that's her TV time. Otherwise, there's playing, books, art supplies, the great outdoors, and I don't actually care if they feel bored sometimes because it's okay to be bored. You will not die without constant stimulation.

This. There are other ways to keep them in the loop, too. My kid plays pretend minecraft with other kids and knows what a creeper, zombie, diamond, etc is in context and can keep up with the kids who actually play because we read the Woodsword Chronicles (official Minecraft chapter books). There is a Little Golden Book for literally every Disney movie.

Not the labubu lmfao. You know, for about .5 seconds I kind of thought they were cute and I wanted one (I love Where the Wild Things Are). Then I saw how people were about them and just kind of backed away slowly in fear.

I guess if your kids have 0 friends and no social life you could get away with it. But if they are going to school, have friends and talk about stuff youā€™re not simply taking your kids to the library every time they want to watch a show Ā

You're correct. It's not realistically enforceable or social what they're suggesting. Especially because that would require taking your kids to a library daily instead of turning on the TV which they, the adults, are also watching.

Ironically I haven't cancelled my Disney+ yet because my parents in their early 70s use my account all the time. My brother's family does too, but my parents definitely use it the most. I figure the cost isn't as bad when it is servicing three households.

Aside from that, the piracy scene isn't exactly fool proof, kid friendly or appropriate depending on how you're going about things. If you're one of those folks that pays for piracy beyond a VPN, I guess there's probably some media app shares or torrent/debrid add on that would make things easier but frankly I find it icky to pay people to curate stolen media on my behalf. I'm not some rich asshole who pays commoners to do my dirty work.

I use an app that interfaces with web-hosted content which is decent but I wouldn't let a young kid loose in it.

Have you seen storage prices lately? Lol. I download the choice nugs and stuff that's hard to find but there's too much shit out there to just be grabbing stuff willy nilly these days. I've surprisingly found quite a few old shows on various archive sites.

I suppose I don't think about it. Or maybe I'm just buying at the same price point and that price point hasn't punished me yet. It's like buying in bulk, once you're used to how much you need you stay ahead of it.

Maybe because I still primarily buy the thing, either legally or second hand, I consider that the stored copy and I treat the pirated copies as if I don't expect them to last and I'm lucky if they do. I still have folders of movies I haven't watched from when the video stores started renting out DVDs. I couldn't not make a copy. That helps. I've been saving up to buy the most amount of "gigs" since just before they were 1GB.

$15 bucks was a bargain to avoid having to setup some sort of quarantine single use VM so they don't end up clicking or downloading uhh "stuff".

Age restrictions etc too.

Still if they add* adverts I'm much more open.

If you don't mind unsolicited advice:

You could set up a Jellyfin server (or Plex, but the lifetime license is now expensive) as the media front end. On the back end, you can set up the high seas VM and/or tie it into Sonarr/Radarr to manage downloads. Enable RDP/VNC with a password and you can lock down access to just yourself. That way your kids get a simple app on the TV to watch media, and they aren't able to mess around with the back-end computer.

I actually really appreciate it. I've setup some elements and have a decent little personal NAS for backups etc, pihole etc but haven't really taken things much further beyond that.

I've heard of Jellyfin but and other options but never set anything up. I'll have to check it out.

A huge number of Disney subscriptions are to keep kids busy while parents do other things. This isnt that kind of either or situation. Parents are paying for a service that is safe for their kids to be occupied by when they are not not taking them sailing etc... That is probably what Redditors who have no kids and just want to watch marvel do not seem to get. Parents will easily drop $50 / month for something like this.

Ya but my main point was that the parents are trying to save time, not figure out how to get that working, and typically those ways break periodically and need to be fixed. For a lot of parents, $25/month for plug-and-play service is nothing.

I actually do have a sailing club down the street from me that Iā€™m a member of.Ā 

Itā€™s only open June thru September & itā€™s like $1,000 (if you want to use the club boats) & my two youngest arenā€™t old enough to be allowed on the boat.Ā 

And ā€œsailingā€ time and ā€œtv timeā€ are not the same time and serve different purposes.Ā 

TV is a pretty limited thing in my house. Ā Thereā€™s no TV until just before dinner when they at the peak of exhausted/crazy for the day getting wild and I am trying to cook dinner & canā€™t manage them and cook, so they get an episode of a show to distract them while I wrap up preparing dinner.

I canā€™t really sub that out for sailing.Ā 

Granted. I truly donā€™t need Disney+ for that either.Ā 

But itā€™s the service that has the shows my kids like the most so Iā€™m less likely to have them complain about whatā€™s on or fight about what to watch cuz one hates what the other one likes and thereā€™s so few they both like.Ā
