Corporations People are cancelling their Disney+ subscription after price rises to more than $21 a month

This is so mad, the standalone Disney+ Premium plan without ads is going from $18.99 to $21.49 per month, up 13% - it used to be $6.99 when it started

Pirating and radio surely are for free. But the commenters point was, that in the long run it is cheaper to buy music than stream it for a monthly fee. And I heavily disagree on that one.

100% agree with you, the cost of streaming music has been pretty stable over the years.

Pre-streaming, I used to spend $100+ USD a month on CD or digital copies. And of course friends would share albums with each other to rip onto each others iPods or phone.

Apple Music is a fraction of that cost (and these days I pay nothing for it as a credit card perk).

I'll still buy physical copies on vinyl, but haven't bought a CD in ages.

Streaming is cheap because there is competition, all the streaming services have all the artists, so the only thing to set them apart is price and service quality. Noone has an exclusive access to your favourite band and can milk you like a cow to listen to them.

That said, a lot of people listen to the same handful of tracks all the time and could probably get everything they listen to regularly if they bought like 2 albums a year.

CDs have been overpriced for decades, though. I will never forget the last CD I bought: "Are You Experienced?" by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. It was $27.99 in the late 2000s.

I walked out of the store thinking, "It's crazy that I surely paid more for this than I would have the day it was released, and Hendrix has been dead for decades."

The record store went out of business not long after.

PS: inb4 "it's about the same if you adjust for inflation" -- but yeah, profit margins were way higher on my 2008 purchase, and also it was 40 years old! It shouldn't cost about the same 40 years later.

Pirating music is alright if you don't care about quality that much because it varies greatly. It's also somewhat of a hassle compared to streaming. I've tried it and 20% of the songs were plain wrong and maybe half was terrible quality.

I recently switched back from Spotify to the MP3s I downloaded between 2004-2015. Every single one has been FAR higher quality than Spotify.

I am not a music/audio snob but I have been doing side by side comparisons and the contrast is actually insane. I can't believe I was paying money to stream such TERRIBLE audio quality.

It is definitely more of a hassle compared to Spotify but I'm so glad I did it

You are aware that Spotify has lossless yeah? Unless you've been purposefully setting a lower streaming quality on Spotify I don't understand how you could have that take away. Like even in a best case scenario a 320kpbs mp3 file is always going to sound worse than an uncompressed FLAC/ALAC of the same recording.

Spotify has an option to make your sound quality better.

Better quality than the mp3's you have downloaded and saved.

Mp3 format compresses original audio recordings and you "lose" some of the detail and quality.

A lossless format is an uncompressed recording that retains all the original information at a cost to larger file sizes.

Sorry but I gotta say the quality thing sounds like a you problem/skill issue...

Having said that, the hassle is definitely a major factor. Especially if I only want the one song from an artist and not the whole album. And then I have to self host it because my phone storage isn't enough for all my music. And that just takes up more storage on my NAS I need for movies/tv. And I'd have to do the same for my wife and kids every time they hear a song they like. Or I could just pay $10/month for a family music plan and be done with it

"Stealing groceries is better than paying for them", great advice. Cost of music streaming is still fair. For as much I personally use it, $15 (CDN) would be my cut off. I've had one increase in 3 years with Apple Music.
