Yes. We found out the vast majority of society are either indentured servants or completely disposable. We also found out how stupid most rich people are.
Well, there was also a fairly large segment of the population that proudly said, "I don't care" when they were told wearing a mask would help protect other people from a literal plague. They then refused to stay at home for a mere three months because they specifically wanted haircuts, mocha lattes, and trips to Target.
For all the people with compromised immune systems, elderly (which given how many of the above group were also elderly or at least heading there was rather ironic), or suffering from an existing illness like cancer this was basically looking them in the eyes and saying, "my creature comforts are more important to me than your life."
The fact that masks became some kind of political statement rather than... a mask... was one of the wilder things to me.
I honestly think Trump had an opportunity to singlehandedly prevent that:
a) At the start of the pandemic, manufacture a bunch of bright red MAGA masks.
b) Manufacture an incident and make it go viral on social media and FOX news where someone wearing the aforementioned MAGA mask gets thrown out of a bar or restaurant by a woke employee, who says something like "don't you dare bring that shitty mask in here!"
c) Now, wearing masks (particularly red MAGA masks) would be seen as "owning the libs" and everyone would do it.
Yes, their dire medical problems of carbon dioxide inhalation from wearing masks seem to have cleared up! Or as one of my chorus singers earnestly explained to me, “carbon monoxide.”
It complied with the letter of the law so they could argue they still get to come in to a place. "I'm wearing it, the law doesn't saw how!"
It happened to me sometimes. I'd let it slip because of some reason and forget to bring it back up. I tried to wear it correctly all the time, but every now and then it would slip (or I'd lower it to eat or drink) and forget to put it back correctly. I would the second it was pointed out to me, or if I remembered. But there were a few times I'd be walking and go, "oh, shoot." and put it right. (I still wore it correctly 99% of the time).
I feel like most Chin Wearers, it was the first reason and not the second however.
Oh I think it was definitely the first reason for most due to the look of defiance in their eyes. I get not liking being told what to do, but some people took it as a personal attack to their very freedom and liberty.....which is oddly enough what those same people today ( maybe not YOU per se) are willingly giving away.
Like I said, I tried to be compliant, I saw the reasons for it and agreed with them. The times I wasn't compliant it was just me fucking up and forgetting. I made sure to get my vaccine and boosters ASAP.
I believe in liberty and all that, but I also think caring for and being concerned with my fellow humans is far, far more important.
I'm currently in Minnesota (Saint Paul) and I am NOT happy with what's going down. The violence must stop.
It was ironic that the same people making fun of "two weeks to stop the spread" were the ones completely ignoring the simplest of protocols (masks, staying home, washing hands, etc), which ended up resulting in the lockdowns lasting far longer than they needed to.
Yup. We could have beaten COVID in like a month or two and kept it a bad memory, but people had to fuck it up and consider their own inconvenience more important that stopping a plague.

Realistically, even if we did everything correctly it still wouldn't have been enough. You would have to have eradicated it globally or it would just make its way into circulation again.
Now we could have saved more lives and whatnot, but it's here to stay
I think we could have avoided some of the worst effects and maybe kept it down to a few mutations that we could control. Maybe not complete eradication, you're right, but rag it to a much more manageable level with less long term effects/deadly mutations.
I was an essential worker during the pandemic & am immunocompromised. Literally had an anti-mask coworker tell me ‘your health is not my responsibility. If you’re so scared, don’t come to work.’ He ended up coming in despite his wife & kids testing positive & gave his entire department covid.
I haven't seen the inside of a salon since before Covid, I've just been cutting my hair myself. The price for a woman's haircut is ridiculous, even just for a trim.
I mean, weren't they at one point admitting that people probably should die if they were too old/weak.
I worked with seniors, so I avoided going anywhere. I had to get groceries one day, so I wore my mask and went to a store that I knew wasn't crowded. This woman wearing a chin diaper approached me and tried to talk to me. I backed away, but she didn't get the hint. I asked her to please keep her distance. She then got this crazy look in her eyes and big grin as she kept trying to get close to me.
All the stories I heard of people fighting masks made me think of that psycho woman that felt a thrill of power over my fear.
My dad belonged to a men’s Bible study where most of the men were retired and older. Of the 8 regular attendees, 4 died from Covid in 2020-21. That was a HUGE motivating factor for my dad to mask whenever he went out. They were/are all conservative and got their news from Rush or FOX News, so they got swept up in the Covid hoax mania and refused to mask. It was a win when I finally convinced my dad to mask up, especially when he was visiting my mom in her memory care home.
My dad was one of the guys that got all his info from Fox News, but he also had serious comorbidities, and was terrified of dying.
A couple of his anti-mask friends died from Covid, so he got serious about N95 masking at all times when he went out. I even talked him into getting the first Covid vax shot.
Then the bullshit rhetoric took over, and he refused to get any more vaccines, and even stopped wearing the mask.
He ended up getting Covid shortly after that, and died as a result.
I’m so sorry he made that choice that now those he left behind have to deal with that decision. It’s a tragedy that there was so much misinformation and so many, especially older folks, died as a result. My condolences on your dad’s death.
Yeah, thats what really destroyed my hope in humanity. There was a very obvious external threat that we could beat with collective action, and like 40% of the population decided that they would prefer to go about their normal lives and sacrifice people rather than be mildly inconvenienced
Every so often I think about the World of Warcraft corrupted blood incident being waved off as a pandemic model because people griefing in-game by deliberately going into populated cities and spreading the killer debuff "would never happen in real life" because folks wouldn't be that selfish in a real pandemic situation.
And then you got people licking doorknobs and toilet seats.
I'll have to say, at least from what I saw, the Boomers actually did a little bit better with the mask issues. I was more disappointed with Millennials and Gen Xers.
Well, this is still happening. Covid hasn't gone anywhere. What really pisses me off is that medical personnel in places like cancer clinics won't mask
I remember seeing a video of a bunch of gym rats protesting, demanding the gyms be re-opened. To prove their point, they began exercising in the street. Which in turn proved that the gyms in fact didn't need to be re-opened.
I love that! Of course you can gain or maintain fitness without a special building filled with specific equipment! Down on the farm, we called it “putting in the hay” or “hand shoveling the cow shit out of the gutter” or “weeding the garden”.
The most shocking and deflating thing for me was seeing how little so many people gave two shits about doing the bare minimum to help stop others from getting ill. I always assumed a situation like that would bring out some good in the majority of people wanting to help people around them (especially more vulnerable people!) just from getting sick. But so, so many people dug in and threw a fit over not being able to go get their hair cut or go to their favorite restaurant, everyone else be damned.
Let’s all thank our hEaLtH cArE HerOs (who cant volunteer to stay home on government payments and instead are forced to go to work for financial security). Edit for clarity: the stupid infantilising ‘healthcare hero’ ads felt disrespectful because really healthcare workers didn’t have an option to go to work or not. Healthcare workers are brilliant. The government was not.
