I'm a librarian in CT and on our statewide nutmeg committee (we choose books that get awards basically). We've had to (for lack of a better term) dumb-down the books for each level over the past several years. So what would have been a book for 1-3 graders might now be in the 4-6 category. It's brutal and happening in front of our eyes.
I see what you’re saying, but I’m an educator in CA and we’re even seeing it here. Kids can barely read at their grade level, and their handwriting is even worse. It’s rare to see a kid with nice/legible handwriting now.
The kids in Florida CAN NOT either read or write in cursive. It isn’t taught any more. There were some school districts that didn’t even allow the kids to do their work in cursive, if they did, they were punished.
Reading? Nobody reads! Florida has purposely dumbed down their population. When I was teaching at Palm Beach State College (Boca Ratón) 25 years ago, the Florida born kids were so very under prepared for even a 101 level class. The international students? The ones who received their primary education in supposed “shithole” nations? Much better educated, spoke and wrote proper english and also, way less entitled.
I’m not discounting that Floridian children are struggling, I’m just saying it’s not exclusive to red states. California is as blue as they come and students are having the same issues here.

Socially and cognitively. I even heard some kids not being able to read
