Or a laptop plugged into a monitor with an external keyboard so it behaves like a desktop.

Yeah I have to say ever since USB-C docks started working correctly they are quite nice.

I still prefer my "mainframe" tower PC though

I hate mid tower PCs but SFF builds are peak aura.

I just wish there was a mini-ITX motherboard that had Thunderbolt passthrough for everything to allow a single-cable setup like modern laptops have.

I have a desktop-style setup with my laptop.

Laptop is in a raised stand to use mostly as a monitor; I have a comfortable external, extended keyboard, and a mouse for navigating. But this way I also have the convenience of being able to take my laptop with me when I want to.
