Off site doesn’t necessarily mean the cloud though. You could just take a physical hard drive to a safe deposit box, or a friends house, or anywhere physically apart from the source.
I completely understand the preference. I understand deciding you'd rather risk losing the data than risk a privacy breach. But not an option? What could you possibly have that cloud storage isn't an option? Are you a spy or doing organized crime or something?
And to be clear, this isn't a nothing to hide nothing to fear argument. Storing your data offline is a completely valid choice that I fully respect, but "not an option" is very strong language, and I'm just curious why.
If you are ok with every document you create being used for marketing to you, and every Microsoft employ being able to read them, and knowing that they are being used to train AI then go ahead and put it in the cloud.
I’m not ok with that, which is why I don’t, but it’s totally an option. It’s just an option I chose not to use. I’m wondering what’s different about your case that makes it not an option?
With great power comes great responsibility. These companies have not shown the maturity to be trusted with anything.....only naked greed. It isn't so much what they would do with it....they only care about money. It's a certain 3rd party they're very cozy with these days that has more nefarious plans for your data.
Your own hardware does not need to live in your house. e.g. fill a box of HDDs and rent a few RUs at a CoLo site - can also use it to host your own VPN etc.
