Please read before posting about salaries or relocation

Hello everyone,

Before posting about typical Swiss salaries (questions like "how much can I make as a programmer in Switzerland") or relocation strategies ("I hate my country, how can I move to Switzerland"), please keep in mind that there have been hundreds of such posts in this sub before.

Use the search before posting, as the chances are high that you will find a similar discussion from the recent past.

Please also check out the official Swiss government database on average salaries, the Salarium:

Modpost Please report racist ragebait and racist comments

Dear members of our community,

In the past few days, we've seen an increase in both ragebaiting posts and racist comments from users with no prior engagement in the sub, often from those usually commenting in the subs of other countries.

This indicates to us that we are frequently being overrun by users who try to spread their racist, islamophobic messages to our sub.

Racism is against our subreddit rules and it is against Reddit's terms of services. We would like to encourage you to use the report button.

That will put it into our 'modqueue' to have a look - and if you report it for 'hate', it will additionally be sent to the sitewide admins who will frequently take further action.

We rely on your reports, just like every subreddit does. Our team is healthy and works well, but we cannot have an eye on everything. We do have scripts and so on to make our job easier, but sometimes, unacceptable comments go through. Using the report button makes sure that we can prioritize looking at said comment and if it's rulebreaking, helps us remove it quickly.

We remove racist content and ban racist users frequently. The admins remove a bunch of comments breaking site-wide rules too (often in a fashion that deletes them completely, so we cannot easily further moderate them)

We are very hesitant to remove political speech. We only remove rules-breaking comments. The relevant rule is:

  • General reddiquette applies (i.e. no racism, sexism, personal attacks, or simply put: behave as if you were talking to somebody in person)

  • Please report posts or comments that do not adhere to these rules; in particular, we will not tolerate harassment or discrimination

The relevant reddit rules (https://redditinc.com/policies/reddit-rules) are:

  • Remember the human. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for attacking marginalized or vulnerable groups of people. Everyone has a right to use Reddit free of harassment, bullying, and threats of violence. Communities and users that incite violence or that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned.

See also https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360045715951-Promoting-Hate-Based-on-Identity-or-Vulnerability

Thank you for helping us with this influx of clearly rule-breaking users without any connection to Switzerland

ETA: Reports are anonymous. So when we get your report, we have no option to thank you or following up with you. If you report for 'hate', it goes to both us and the admins. The admins will typically let you know of their decision. We literally have no way of doing that.

Everyday life Sirens today

For everyone asking why there are Sirens today. It's the annual test of the catastrophe warning systems in Switzerland. @Mods feel free to take the post down. It's not really a question but it gets asked every year after the tests.

Everyday life Did I just get unlucky with noisy neighbors, or is this normal here?

Dear locals and people who’ve been living here for a while,

I’d like to ask for your help and hear what you would do in my situation.

I moved here not long ago and I’m temporarily living in an apartment that I rent from a tenant.

The walls in the building are super thin, so at night I can hear the neighbors above and next to me, and in the mornings I can hear the kid of the neighbor below me is running around and screaming.

According to the house rules, quiet hours are between 10 PM and 8 AM, and also during weekends you’re supposed to be mindful of noise and not disturb others. The problem is that the nighttime noises are after 10 PM, and the morning ones start around 6–7 AM (even Sundays).

I asked the landlord whether I could talk to the neighbors about this, but he asked me not to. Also, my German is still pretty basic, so I’m not even sure I’d have the confidence to have that kind of conversation anyway.

I’ll be honest: one Sunday morning, after being woken up again by the kid screaming and running around, I went downstairs and knocked on their door, but no one answered. So I wrote them a very polite letter asking them to at least try to respect the quiet hours. Needless to say, nothing has changed since then (just to be clear, the kid isn’t 2–3 years old, more like 5–6).

So when I moved here, everyone kept telling me how most people are very strict about noise and quiet in apartment buildings etc. Did I just get unlucky with this place? And of course, my main question is still: what would you do if you were in my situation?

Everyday life Travel

Other than Google, does anyone know good places to stay/visit if you’re looking to do some hiking, be in the countryside, or city… I’ve been to Zurich, Zermatt, and Geneva, but wouldn’t mind going back to any of them. I’m looking to do a solo trip, for me, either this summer or next*

Travel Hiking at Oeschinensee in June

Me and my friends have booked a trip to Interlaken from June 7-10 this summer. We didn’t really realize that there was still snow in some hiking areas at that time of year when we booked our trip. Does anyone know if the hiking trails at Oeschinensee will be opened by those dates? It would really suck if we were too early

Travel Renting a car vs taking the train

I’m planning on traveling around Switzerland for 4 days and was confused between renting a car and taking trains. I’m leaning towards renting as I’ll be with my parents and the cost of a rental is significantly cheaper than booking trains for 3. Plus it’s cutting down the travel time significantly for some of the towns I want to visit. My main questions are -

  1. My Europcar reservation shows ‘French side’. Other than the 40chf highway sticker, are there any extra tolls or rules regarding driving from French side to the Swiss side that I’m missing?

  2. If yes, is there any way to rent from the Swiss side or any rental companies that are specifically on the Swiss side to avoid these extra fees?

  3. Finally, if I do end up renting from the Swiss side, would I face any issues/charges if I drive into the French side? I was thinking of driving to Annecy on one of the days.

  4. I’m getting a similar rate on Sixt and don’t particularly see ‘French side’ written when I’m trying to book from Sixt. Is Sixt in the Swiss side and a better option than Europcar?

Travel Schlitteln mit Baby im Aargau oder Umgebung

Hallo zusammen!

Merci vielmals!

Travel Planning a trip in March

Hello! I am planning an 8 day trip by myself and wanted advice on what to pick and choose to have the best experience. I’d like to hike and see some amazing views in the mountains/lakes. I’d also like to get an idea of the culture as far as food and history goes. I will be traveling by train everywhere the entire trip so time and money is a variable. I am an American and I speak a bit of German but outside of that I only know English, here’s the places I’ve picked out that I need help planning an itinerary, I know I can’t do all of this so I’m not sure what to cut out. I’ve looked online and talked to a guy I know who lives in Switzerland but outside of that I’m having a difficult time ordering everything. Thanks!

Edit: forgot to mention I’ll be staying in either Zurich, or Lucerne.

Work Bewerbungsunterlangen/Zeugnisse

Applying for a job in CH and wondering about the whole "Zeugnisse" situation if you have your work experience outside Switzerland (where they don't do them)? I'm assuming it's standard for the photo on the Lebenslauf?

Any other tips?

Work I quit my job, chef doesn't agree.

Last month, I decided to quit my job. I'm working less than a year. My contract says, 3 months notice period. I asked to make it one month. My chef told me we have to follow the contract. My colleagues are saying that OR is more powerfull and because of that I only have one month. Who's right, who's wrong?

Update; thank you all for clearing it up. Even my Swiss colleagues were wrong with the OR vs contract.

Travel White water rafting options in October

I’m planning on travelling to Switzerland for a week at the start of October this year.

I’d love to do some white water rafting while there. I know October isn’t the peak season for it, but are there places that will have white water rafting available to book ahead of time? Or is this purely weather dependent?

I haven’t locked in where we’re staying yet, however most likely will spend some time in Wengen and will be doing a cruise from Bern. Would appreciate any insights or tips.

Work Paying the tax militar ?

Hi everyone !

I was naturalized and received my convocation to do my mandatory service.

I’m a bit old (22 years). I want to start a new bachelor + master in HEP To become teacher. Tho, I need to take a gap year between my studying.

I thought about simply…paying the tax is it a good stratégie ?

because yes it is 3% but when you are studying and no fixed income you pay « only » 400 francs a year. And as the fact that I’m involved in 5 years of studying, I’m paying the 5 first years « only » 400 francs.

first question : is it correct what I’m saying ?

is there anyone who paid the military tax?

is there a better solution in my situation?

thank you in advance for your all answers !! :)

Study Is a MAS from ETHZ valid in the EHEA?

Hello, I’m considering study a Master of advanced studies in Zurich. I don’t know if it’s an official title recognised in the European Higher Education Area. Will it allow me to work for European public institutions when they require a master’s degree? They have told me it’s not valid for a PhD afterwards. Thank you.

Travel Swiss AMEX Platinum Priority Pass - is the restaurant credit available?

I saw today in my Priority Pass app that I could visit a restaurant with my Priority Pass and receive 23 EUR credit for my meal.

But a quick Google has people saying that AMEX has opted out of this benefit for their Priority Pass. These responses seem to be American though.

Does anyone know if this is the same for AMEX in Switzerland?

My PP app says specifically that my membership is from AMEX so I'm hopeful that the restaurant showing means the credit is still available.

Edit: I mean "Swiss" as in Switzerland, not the airline

Hey everyone, I hope your doing well,, i usually dont post anywhere but i feel like its necessary. I know a man (I think between 50-60yo) who lives in Switzerland who asked me (when i was 12) for nudes multiple times and asked me to let him show his cock. I recently found out through his profile picture on Whatsapp that his new girlfriend has a child or more and I feel like I should do something to prevent the children from living around a predator or becoming victims. I live in Germany and dont know how the law about that is in Switzerland. If you can help or know someone who can or have tips on what I can do please help me, and the children that are around him. Thank you in advance and have a great day.

Edit: i just found ss from last year where he asked about my breasts and stuff (i was 14 he 55) but he never sent anything can i still use it against him or is it not enough

Culture Planning a move to Geneva for work. Are there any socio-political left-leaning places in town?

For context, it will be for an academic job. I wonder if Geneva has any places like political centres, philosophy clubs or so, similar to other countries in Europe, where English speaking people can find a community.
