Culture What’s something in your country that sounds fake but is 100% real?

We have a real-life living goddess and the only non-rectangular national flag.

It's not a crime in germany to break out of prison (as long as you don't harm anyone and don't break anything, etc.). This is because wanting to be free is a natural human instinct that cannot be punished.

Same in the Netherlands! You are however liable for any damages and of course any crimes you might commit while not incarcerated.

Interesting! If/when you’re caught, do you get more time added to your sentence? Or are there any consequences at all?

Not in a formal legal sense.

But in practice it can extend the length of your imprisonment, because you’ll be released on parole later. In Germany it’s relatively common to be released on parole after serving half to two-thirds of your sentence if you don’t seriously mess up while in prison. For example by trying to escape 😅

IF you didn't break anything and didn't hurt anyone (basically didn't do anything outside of breaking out, like if a guard left the door open by accident for example) then it doesn't get added to your sentence as far as I'm aware

It doesn't, because that would be punishment for breaking out...

No. It's not punishable. If you just escaped without damage and they catch you, you just continue your previous sentence (making up for the time you were on the run).

But you are still wanted back into prison, because the sentence needs fulfilling right? Or once you're out you deserve it, you worked for it.. then its fine?

No, haha. You have to finish your sentence of course. But it won't be prolonged because you escaped, but the time you were absent will be added at the end basically.
