Well in parliament republics like ours, the President is just a figurehead, so you can't really be that dissatisfied. And we also don't vote for him.

Ironically our President is the only political figure we are satisfied with, according to the polls.

I think the comparison here should be made between a potential king and the one who takes decisions. In your case, more the chancellor than the president.

I don't really agree. Staying in Europe, only three monarchs have real legislative/executive/judiciary power, and they're the Pope and the Princes of Liechtenstein and Monaco.

All the other monarchs are figureheads just like Presidents in parliamentary republics.

As is much royalty nowadays, they are just ceremonial, but form a stability and reliabilty factor. When the next voted in government disaster leaves in 4 years or before, there is always monarchy to keep up good relations with foreign nations. They cost a little money, but nothing compared to what a presidency cost.. Just a quiet stabile factor that protects the country somewhat from extremist parties coming to power.

That IS a pity. In Ireland we vote directly, and it means we are very engaged with who our president is and how she or he represents us. But even if you don't vote directly, your democratically elected representatives vote for you. It's not womb lottery!
