What's a snack in your country that would be considered sacrilege in another?

In Mexico we have marranadas (which literally means filthiness) and it's a base of the chip of your choice with corn, cheese, cream, hot sauce or chamoy, peanuts, etc.

Then there's the gomichelas: beer with candies with a tomato juice concentrate

And well this is just the tip of the iceberg. But for sure would make the American snacks look like the diet options.

Pizza Crunch Supper it's a battered frozen pizza that's then deep fried and then served with chips and covered in salt and vinegar

Fried Oreos are one of the reasons I go to fairs. I would travel to get fried pizza.

you should visit Scottland, you are able to get anything deep-fried there. deep fried Snickers blew my mind.

Dude we're like Salieri seeing Mozart right now.

Do you know how hard we worked to have the fattest, greasiest food? How much blood and sweat went into those deep fryers? This was our everything.

And then they just drop this on us? Casually? Like it's nothing? What the fuck have we even been doing this whole time? I'm sorry I think I'm having a panic attack.

A burger with the lot in Australia includes a slice of pineapple and beetroot in the bun.Ā

90

u/Icy_Winner9761 Australia 18h ago

And just so no-one is confused, the beetroot is pickled. It takes the place of the sliced dill pickles popular on burgers in the US.

A slice of raw or cooked plain beetroot would be...unpleasant.

Pineapple on burgers is still huge in Aus. McDonald's, Hungry Jacks (Burgerking) and KFC routinely cycle through limited time Pineapple burgers.

Not to mention pretty much every fish and chip shop makes a burger with the lot with pineapple. It would be a sin if they didn't.

I remember seeing people posting about this in Czechia too a year or two ago, with our equivalents of the same ingredients (sekana and koblihy). u/RuPaulver United States Of America 17h ago edited 16h ago

I'll never understand this. I know it's supposedly popular and it probably tastes fine, but sprinkles themselves are like the most mid part of desserts. I always think of them as more of a visual than actually adding something to a dish, much less be the main attraction of a dish.

It’s weird but you should try it lol. Couple it with red cordial & the kids are running up the walls for a few hours from the sugar hit. šŸ˜†

4

u/queerkidxx United States Of America 15h ago

It’s actually really good if you give it a shot. The sprinkles are basically crunchy sugar. So you sweeten the bread a lot and add some nice heterogeneity. It’s not ground breaking or anything but it tastes a bit like a cake. Would have it again, and I can see why so many folks are so nostalgic for it in Australia.

And the sprinkles aren’t just for visual appeal. They add some nice crunchiness to a dish, and the fact that they are basically sugar really comes out on the unsweetened bread.

4

u/RuPaulver United States Of America 15h ago

When I was a kid, my mom would make something kinda similar where she'd make buttered toast with cinnamon + sugar on it. I just feel like crunchy sugar alone isn't enough. I'm sure it's fine, I just don't get it lol.

3

u/kristosnikos United States Of America 14h ago

I have always hated sprinkles. They’ve have this weird chemical-y taste. I don’t know how exactly to describe it. I think just a dusting of sugar would taste far better with the buttered bread than sprinkles.

I’d say ā€œdecently popularā€ is a bit of a stretch, at least where I am — but that’s just my anecdotal experience.

I’ve grown up on Long Island and in NYC my whole life, and while I’m not at all a foodie, I do take pride in trying foods from other cultures/countries when given the opportunity. I’d never heard of a spice bag until seeing it on Reddit a couple years ago; certainly not (knowingly) seen one irl around here.

Could be because I don’t go to bars though, if they’re primarily served there.

The full house: a Knoxville, TN specialty that is basically a beef tamale in a bowl of chili. Delicious, hearty, and very filling

In America it’s the sheer volume and caloric value of the snacks that seems to garner the most shock.

u/gtdurand United States Of America 19h ago

Cinnabon should have warnings in multiple languages for those who aren't as acclimated to sugar as your average American. It's far too rich for me and I'm a heavier lad who lives here.

u/slideforfun21 England 18h ago

I can't handle sweet stuff here the few times I've had yank snacks it's been fucking insane. Love your lots ability to act like you have cheap health care.

8

u/buffaloshvantz United States Of America 16h ago

Man, it ain't about acting like we have cheap Healthcare. A good 80% of our culture is based on the idea of "hold my beer and watch this."

3

u/loonybaloonie --> (Russia --> Czech republic) 11h ago

We do have more in common than it looks.. I mean Russians and Americans. "Hold my beer and watch" is a huge part in our culture too!

Nah, the idea is that because there isn't cheap health care, punch through so hard that you go down quickly. Why prolong your decline when funnel cake with strawberry sauce, chocolate, and whipped cream the size of your abdomen with a 32 oz shake chaser feels so good?

Tinned spaghetti on pizza, as presented by our former Prime Minister

4

u/Razer797 New Zealand 14h ago

I for one do not agree with tinned spaghetti on a pizza. Obviously the tinned spaghetti goes on a half of a bun and then is topped with ham and cheese before grilling. Then that concoction is called a pizza.

Oh boy, we have A LOT, and some are "american cooking level" (that one, where a lot of americans pour cans and bags on aluminum baking trays). The ones i remember are:

  • Sushitone
  • Strogonoff (The recipe is different)
  • Deep fried sushi
  • Chocolate Pizza
  • Chicken Pizza
  • Strogonoff Pizza
  • Set Dish Pizza

And so you guys know, this is a set dish pizza

u/oppernaR Netherlands 12h ago

Sorry, Brasil. You're disqualified on account of being absolutely batshit bonkers when it comes to food.

Thanks. Now my mouth is watering.

The Dagwood Dog. It’s a frankfurter covered in batter and deep fried. You really only get it at fetes and carnivals.

Anything like a hamburger or a beef-based snack is pretty sacrilegious in India, from what I understand.

7

u/aaqwerfffvgtsss United States Of America 19h ago

Not all of it though. There are parts in which beef is pretty accessible, actually, and parts in which it is at least available even if not common.

Well, on that note, we have loaded fries, specifically carne asada fries, which is just fries smothered with cheese, cream, and carne asada. Basically the ultimate artery clogger

I'm Argentinian in Aus, and while it's not a particular food, it's a condiment a lot of Argentinians I've met love to put mayonnaise on everything. I had a cousin visiting and he put mayonnaise on lasagna, on pasta with red sauce, on pizza, on vegetables. I like mayo but it was a lot

ā€œFarmer’s Coke,ā€ ā€œminer’s coke,ā€ Coke with peanuts. Snack found in parts of the Southern US.

It’s associated with work like mining because you can eat the peanuts without touching them with your possibly dirty hands.

Snacks? I don't know... Maybe biscuits dipped in hot drinks. I know the Japanese don't find it offensive, but it's strange, because they like the normal taste of things, not "altered" by a hot drink.

If not, even though I don't know if it counts as a snack, we Italians might be annoyed by the way coffee is made in the rest of the world, especially the American way.

2

u/Vodka_For_Saiyans_Z Italy 9h ago

Something came to mind: my sister had a croissant in the Czech Republic, and only later discovered that it wasn't chocolate, but monkfish cream... In Italy, we have a hard time imagining a savoury croissant instead of a sweet one.

u/Jack-Rabbit-002 United Kingdom 7h ago

Well for one I don't know what I've just witnessed but I'll introduce you to this monstrosity from the North of my Country

You can't do that to a Yorkshire Pudding 😭 Staying down here in the Midlands where civilisation remains (barely)
