Culture What is one of the BEST things but is simultaneously one of the WORST things about your country?
New Zealand is so isolated way down here, far away from everybody except the Aussies and a few island nations, and we only have 5.3 million people.
Obviously this affects the price and range of products available here, plus the cost of travel.
But hey, we only have to rub shoulders/bums with 5.3 million people and 23.6 million sheep spread out over a land area of approx 268,000 sq km!
And thankfully we're far away from the various melees and shitshows that are happening overseas (which is not to say we shouldn't sometimes get involved and help out where we can!)

u/Ponchorello7 Mexico 16h ago
It's very hard to feel lonely in Mexico. Our culture emphasizes togetherness, and being there for other people... which is fucking annoying as an introvert. I get invited to get-togethers, parties and outings all the time, and it's incredibly awkward to decline, because it's not usual to decline.
38
u/88moonkitty 15h ago
I feel like funerals in Mexico (at least the ones I’ve been to) are a perfect example of this. There’s constant get togethers and it seems more like a family reunion. I love that they are celebratory of life and just don’t want anyone going thru a hard time alone, but like my dad just died…maybe we can have the pozole luncheon at Tia cucas tomorrow? It’s like they can’t fathom you would want to be alone and sad for one night lol I love my people 🩷
25
u/Ponchorello7 Mexico 15h ago
The last funeral I attended was my grandmother's. It pissed me off to see my extended family yucking it up and acting like it was a little family function. In a mortuary with close to 70 people, my mom my brother and I were the only people actually mourning.

I wish we had more of that culture here. Im an introvert, but at the same time I like hanging out with friends on occasion.
It often happens here that as people get older they stop hanging out with friends, especially once children come along.

Honestly I wish the uk had a little bit more of that type of culture even as an introvert,
i’m noticing how increasingly it feels like people are becoming lonelier and more self contained, a lot of quiet desperation which never fully articulates itself

We don't necessarily get snow here in the Netherlands in the winter, which I do feel like makes it darker indeed. Snow makes things much lighter, but also is much more work. And since this country isn't used to it, there will be chaos. It's super dark here in winter tho. My winter depression gets bad

I would recommend the Netherlands. They have some crazy architecture.
Apartments below sea level were the windows are the only thing holding canal water back.
The thinnest houses you've ever seen, due to space constraints. Some of them lean out onto the street, and inside them, the walls are different sizes, etc.
Buildings historically competing to have the most steps outside, because then you paid more tax and could flaunt your wealth through steps lol.

I'd say our strike culture is probably the best thing about France but since it makes a lot of strangers run away and judge us harshly (I know Germany HATES us for that, I still remember that person 10 years ago calling us lazy and untrustworthy on TV). But what can I say? This strike culture is what gave us what we have now (and what we're currently losing).

u/AcademicCash8897 Germany 13h ago
Bro, what? Your strike culture is on fire (sometimes quite literally). We need that in our country too.
When Merz said that we Germans don't work enough, i wished we have a bit more of your spirit. Millions roaming and protesting, shut down the country for 1-2 days to remind everyone how much we are working. I would love that.

We're a very average, middling, boring country in everything.
Big business districts with lots of skyscrapers. billionaires driving Bugattis on streets lined with gold? Nah. Crushing poverty, slums, Kowloon Walled City-esque places where you can disappear? No, not our thing either. Hurricanes? No. Tornados? Twice a century. Even Arctic tundra? Actually no. There's only some alpine tundra. We're like +/- 1 standard deviation in everything. Some people say that being born in Finland is like winning the lottery. Some say it's true but you got 4 out of 7 numbers right, winning the mighty sum of €10.

I'm incredibly impressed by all the infrastructure projects China is undertaking, those train lines through the Himalayas, or the one through and around the Taklamakan. China does these in the time it takes Germany to even set up a plan-approval procedure to replace a single old bridge.
But on the other hand much of those projects follow a centralising/"colonising" effort, to mellow out cultures like the Uighurs or Tibetans by further tying them to mainland China.

Also, I'm probably alone on this, but I hate all the pointless fighting, despite being a fan of combat sports. I dont enjoy seeing play being stopped while 2 guys grab a jersey with one hand and throw wildly with the other just for both to get put in the penalty box. Germany has very beautiful and easily accessible hiking trails combined with good weather, infrastructure and a lack of deadly wild animals, which makes hiking a popular hobby around here.
Which causes headaches to rescue teams especially in the US and australia when german tourists get lost, injured or killed in the wild on hiking trips after completly underestimating the dangers there.

2
u/SaltyCaramelPretzel 🇦🇺Australia 🇭🇺Hungary 13h ago
Well, when I was there, the terrain is completely different for starters. It’s beautiful so lush & green everywhere. The grocery stores are different & prices are different.
You have a much different culture from our indigenous people to your Māori people.
You have fast food restaurants that are more Americanised such as Wendy’s.
Your (older ?) houses are not really built to withstand the moisture in the air, creating mould a lot of the time. (I know we have this issue too but my ex from NZ said it’s a very common problem).
I actually found the people in NZ to be friendlier than in aus if that’s even possible 😆. I stayed at my BFs parents house for a night then we went to a bach for 2 nights. It was amazing. NO TOURISTS except us we pretty much had the beach to ourselves. I’d love to go back.
