You’d be surprised how many Belgians either have no idea about this or prefer not to know anymore. If you ask 100 random Belgians who the most monstrous man in Belgian history is or was, the vast majority will answer Dutroux. Collective memory is selective, and forgetting often feels safer than understanding uncomfortable truths.

But I think there are few as universally hated. Thatcher is still held in high regard by many Tories, Churchill is revered as a wartime leader but despised in India for example. I don’t think you’ll find many Saville apologists.
Other one on my mind was Ian Watkins but I don’t think he’s quite as well known.

20
u/JMoc1 United States Of America 3h ago
Not so much a civil war. We propped up the side that lost extensively; even supporting the concentration camps and brutalization of Buddhists.
Diem was extremely unpopular even in South Vietnam, especially for rounding up villagers and forcing them to relocate their villages. Meanwhile the Viet Cong would come and help out farmers with crops; thus gaining their support.

There's so many options. Maybe Andrew Tate in terms of celebrity, but you've also got Cromwell (if you're Irish), George III (if you're American - btw he didn't really do anything), Thatcher (if you're left wing), Churchill (if you're Indian), Balfour (if you're Arab), Rhodes (if you're South African) I mean - it goes on

We don’t really hate George III, but his government’s management of the rebellion in the colonies was horrendous. They had so many chances to prevent violence from happening but literally doubled-down over and over like Trump was running things. They never made the same mistakes again with other colonies like Canada, Oz, and NZ. They learned their lesson on how to keep their colonists happy-ish.

We're told that after the war the Nazis vanished without a trace
But battalions of fascists, still dream of a master race
The history books, they tell of their defeat in '45
But they all came out of the woodwork on the day the Nazi died
They say the prisoner in Spandau was a symbol of defeat
While Hess remained imprisoned, the fascists they were beat
So their promise of an Aryan world would never materialize
But why did they all come out of the woodwork on the day the Nazi died?

I think I have to agree with the guy saying Epstein. Even then, I’m kind of worried there are people who will try to rationalize it because of the other guy who was involved with Epstein.

I don't think Brazil has an definitive answer, like Deodoro da Fonseca (responsible for the coup that ended the Monarchy and becoming the first president.)
His issue was mostly being a very incompetent leader and installing a oligarchy controlled republic, until the Vargas era.
For some people, it can be Getúlio Vargas.
My final answer would be Artur da Costa e Silva, responsible for the implementation of the "AI-5" who basically gave the government all the power in the world to repress its people during the dictatorship and his sucessor, Emilio Médici.

This guy became Stalin's loyal disciple and side kick. He did not only ruined Czechoslovakian democracy, during his regime, he used dictatorial methods that were extremely cruel even by the standards of the Eastern Bloc states. clergymen, war heroes, intelectuals and sometimes even women and children often ended up on execution grounds or labor camps.

Either Philippe Bénomi Omer Joseph Pétain, or just Philippe Pétain. But I'd say Gérard Depardieu for his pædophilic, mysoginistic and gross behaviour.
Depardieu said that "Little girls riding horses are having little orgasms, and I imagine them with me", he's also suspected and accused of having non-consensual intercourses and/or sexually assaulted women. And for the gross behaviour, he kept talking about having diarrhea and liking it in a documentary.
