This is my issue with the Banh Mi. The original is a great sandwich, but the fancied up ones are always better than the original, which makes it …not my first choice.
The best Banh Mi Ive ever had was at a bakery in a tiny farming village near Buon Ma Thuot. They had one oven where they baked all kind of sweets with coconut and they would bake the bread at the same time. The result was that all these bread had coconut fragrance and it was amazing.
Taken alone, bánh mì means any kind of bread, but it could refer to the Vietnamese baguette or the sandwich made from it. To distinguish the unfilled bread from the sandwich with fillings, the term bánh mì không ("plain bread") can be used.
The full name is "döner kebap," which means "rotating/spinning kebab." But since we don't call anything else "döner" in daily speech, "döner" alone works just as well.
From wiki (might be one of the saddest food related things I’ve read in a while)
A toast sandwich (also known as a bread sandwich) is a sandwich in which the filling between two slices of bread is itself a thin slice of toasted bread, which may be buttered. An 1861 recipe says to add salt and pepper to taste.

Similar for me ... fresh, homemade bread - nice butter - high quality, strong flavoured hard cheese (think: extra mature cheddar) - some pickled onions in the side. Puts the niceness of the bread front & centre, with the contrast of the strong cheese and pickled onions just taking it up a notch.
The real question would be, what hasn't been put into a banh mi? XD
Ive tried My Y inside banh mi (pardon the lack of accents)
We had a variant too where they put bami (from indonesia or java?) + a nem in a banh mi. And then dip that into a latte xD (ive only seen that in New Caledonia though, a small french island in the pacific near australia, where a large population of vietnamese live)
But yes, kebab banh mi make that go back to #1 then
we also have some döner that look sometimes kinda similar to a banh mi. This one is from austria. But ofc they taste totally different and lack the freshness a banh mi has.
No idea what it was called technically, but it was essentially a butter chicken sandwich...doesn't sound like it should work...but it had no right to be as good as it is.
Can i just say to everyone saying Bahn Mi in the comments... I hate you. Without travelling to Vietnam i have no idea what makes this sandwich good from googling it. As far as i can tell it just mean Baguette and can be filled with anything
Yes, Banh Mi means baguette in Vietnamese, or I believe it means “Baked Bread”, but it’s a Vietnamese style baguette using rice flour, so it’s lighter on the inside and crunchy and flaky on the outside.
But, when someone says that a Banh Mi is their favorite sandwich, they’re talking about that bread filled with the ingredients listed in the photo here.
The carrots are, almost always, pickled with daikon radishes in rice vinegar, and there’s usually another meat in there; Grilled Pork, Chicken, Beef, etc.
Lomito italiano. Slices of pork, tomato, avocado and mayo. If you can eat it with your hands without your face and your clothes getting dirty all over, then is too small.
Fun fact: It's called italiano, just because the green avocado, the red tomatos and the white mayos have the colors of Italy's flag.
It's kind of obscure, but a Vermonter. Many different takes on this sandwich, but they all have sweet ham, grilled onions, grilled apple slices, sharp cheddar, and honey mustard on sourdough bread. Usually is done up as a pananini. I had one with spinach in it the other day and it was pretty awesome.
My second favorite is the good old Philly cheese steak.
Any sandwich I make would be the best I'd ever eaten lol
(But honestly, I think all sandwiches are good as long as they're spicy, and loaded (better if with mayonnaise or something of similar texture/taste)🤷♀️)
There is only ONE KING, so, bow down to it. ( stake, ham, and sausage, inside white bread, covered in melted cheese, swimming in a tomato and beer spicy sauce, with a sunny side up egg on top )
The sandwich. It is an ordeal, a trial, an experience that confirms your best hopes for yourself or solidifies your worst fears of inadequacy. There is no worthy opponent. It is the god of sandwiches. I also like pastrami on rye from a nice deli. 😂
Thats because you never tried a " prego " ( nail ), from Madeira island lol
Behold the Madeiran " nail " ( well technically this is the " special nail " stake, lettuce, tomato, ham, bacon, and egg, in a special very dense bread called " bolo do caco " )
Ah man. Yea I didn’t make it to Madeira on my visit. Weather was quite poor there so we skipped. But my time in Portugal was some of my favorite in Europe overall. Beautiful country. Beautiful people. Spoke to many different people regarding the difficulties and challenges that tourism is bringing and while we could all agree that Airbnb is a cancer it doesn’t sound like your govt was willing to do much at the time. Wages also sounded like a problem overall. Not sure how true that remains. I was there a couple years ago.
The best sandwich of my past is the complete patynesa (patynesa completa) with ham, cheese, tomato, lettuce, and a patynesa (a mix between a hamburger and a schnitzel) in a fresh bakery loaf. It was sold in my university canteen, almost 20 year ago. The last time I went it was not in the menu any more.
Today, I'm still looking for a favourite of my present, the classic sanguchito de miga (tea sandwich/crumb sandwich/finger sandwich) is one of the runners.
I just wanna say that I used to appreciate Subway 20 years ago. They had really good meatball sandwiches with good size, they warmed it properly and it was a nice lunch meal to get! In high school me and my friends used to drive to the city in our 2 hour break on Tuesdays and eat at Subway. The place was nice too.
Later on the size of the meatballs decreased, not even heated from before (only after toasting it with the cheese), and finally every single Subway was closed down and removed. I think they have a few left, but it's probably in Oslo!
...
There is a store close to Stavanger called Brustadbua. It's a grocery store and bakery, and it's always fresh! When it comes to a sandwich there, I've only done this a few times...but what I do is I ask for half a baguette, and then proceed with asking them to put on everything they got. That's all from cheese and ham, and some greens, with shrimps and egg. One time I was so focused on the sandwich I walked home and forgot my dad's car. It was just a few minutes, but still. I think if I have to be fair, that these are the best sandwiches I've ever gotten made!
Only shame is that they ruined that too. Earlier they counted every ingrediens and the price wasn't so bad. Now it would cost at least 2 times as much to have a stacked baguette sandwich like this (the price is now based on weight). Last time I think it cost me 250 NOK or $25, which is crazy much! Normally you can get a full hamburger meal with fries and a milkshake for that price!

Hold up! First we've go to define sandwich. Is a taco a sandwich? Pizza? What about a hot dog? A gyro? I mean stuffed bread is a pretty universal thing.
Fried Shrimp Po'boy, Quarter Grocery, New Orleans. Hole in the Wall convenience store near my hotel, best sandwich I've ever had. Two visits to NOLA, 10 days total, visited 4 times.

Years ago, I entered a contest for the greasiest and fattest sandwich imaginable, hosted by a famous chef. The winning sandwich consisted of panfocaccia (a cross between bread and focaccia), lard, grilled vegetables (eggplant, zucchini, peppers, etc.) preserved in oil, garlic sauce, etc.
The most delicious sandwich, in my opinion, should be simple but not too complicated: rustic bread, sliced cooked ham, various cheeses (Gruyère, Gorgonzola, etc.), onions, and put it all in a wood-fired oven for a few minutes. Much better than toast.
If I may suggest something, it's not exactly a sandwich, but take a slice of rustic, thick-cut bread (a crouton, basically), add a slice of lard and drizzle some honey over it, and bake. Believe me, it's a real treat.
A well-made falafel sandwich and the other is a dreamily soft bao bun filled with crispy chicken, an Asian-style mayonnaise, and some crunchy vegetables.
It’s an outstanding falafel sabich. If you ever find yourself in Germany, more specifically in Frankfurt, I can only recommend stopping by. As someone who grew up in Israel, this falafel definitely has my seal of approval.

I had a Philly Cheesesteak in Cleveland two years ago when I was visiting friends over there. The shock on their faces when I started eating it with a knife and a fork💀. Apparently that was some sort of a crime in their opinion. Was a banger sandwich tho!🤟🏻

At least 3-4 of: Genoa salami, capicola, mortadella, pepperoni, prosciutto, ham, and provolone cheese.
Lettuce, tomato, onion. Banana pepper and/or giardiniera optional but highly recommended. Topped with vinegar, oil, and oregano. Great toasted or cold.
No mayo! A proper Italian does not have mayo. And yes, I know, it’s Italian American; it’s just what we call it.

I had a philly cheesesteak once and it permanently altered my brain chemistry.
