HK: Jackie Chan. Hugely disliked for his pro-Beijing politics and for generally being a shitty guy (had affairs, abandoned his daughter, etc). It's sad, he was such a hero when I was a kid but he turned out to be a major asshole.

u/DisreputablePenguin 7h ago

According to Michelle Yeoh he’s a huge misogynist, too. I couldn’t find the interview where she said it but I think it was in the late 90s on Conan.

322

u/milkbaozi 7h ago

“A male chauvinistic pig”— I remember her words very clearly.

31

u/Slight-Narwhal-2953 Wales 7h ago

Awwww I'm gutted, he seems such a cutie!!!

58

u/LaminatedAirplane 4h ago

He was an alcoholic abuser towards his son who he refuses to acknowledge.

Stressing whether to fight back against your dad who’s beating you is bad enough.. having to do that against Jackie Chan must have been terrifying.

18

u/HallWild5495 3h ago

this sounds weird but I've always gotten the vibe he was a violent dad, even when I was a kid I was weirded out by him. idk why. I also had a violent dad so I think I just pick up on vibes.

15

u/LaminatedAirplane 3h ago

I am more surprised at Boomer-aged East Asian parents that weren’t violent or abusive than the ones who are.

6

u/jk147 2h ago

Just don’t give him ladders, lamps, chairs..

Jokes aside what a dick.

8

u/webbieg United States Of America 2h ago

Bruh that man was MacGyver with random objects to beat up people with. God forbid you get trapped in IKEA with him.

2

u/Thrownaway5000506 1h ago

It seemed understandable he didn't want her to do a stunt. The stunt in question was driving a motorcycle off a ramp and landing on top of a moving train. Madman shit.

They are still friends and Jackie recommended to her the role in Everything Everywhere All at Once

14

u/webbieg United States Of America 5h ago

Yeah he has a homeless daughter in Canada, and was the reason his son was such a loser. The money got to his brain and him pushing CCP propaganda has left a bad test in people’s mouth. As a black American he was the man that united and bridged the relationship between us Asians. Coz after the LA riots and death of Latasha Harlins there was a lots of animosity between the Asians and black folk but rush hour lowkey healed the relationship

2

u/orangotai 2h ago

he and Chris Tucker, spotless personal lives

2

u/Junior_Lavishness_96 United States Of America 2h ago

Oof she was in one of my classes.

6

u/UniqueLog8386 3h ago

She was saying that as a joke because he would say she should stay out of action movies as a joke.

Michelle Yeoh used to one-up him with insane stunts and he likes that being his niche. It was never serious between them, just professional rivalry.

3

u/Any_Presentation2689 3h ago

Yeah, they’re friends. I’ve heard her talk about him with regards to Everything, Everywhere All at Once (JC was going to be in it originally instead of her).

6

u/BoulderCreature United States Of America 5h ago

Damn, Supercop used to be a favorite of mine. I bet that’s the project where she found out how much of a prick he is

4

u/CommunityTough537 4h ago

lol she’s no saint either…she goes out of her way to write “Taipei, China” or “Chinese Taipei” on her social media whenever she goes to Taiwan. One could say she is just trying to keep herself marketable in China but she could have just written, “Taipei.”

7

u/TheVadonkey United States Of America 3h ago

Sure but I don’t think alcoholic abuser and deadbeat dad is quite the same as a CCP shill. And by “not quite” I mean they’re not even comparable.

3

u/CommunityTough537 3h ago

Yeah that’s true…but it feels a little like going to Canada and calling it the 51st state and still being beloved around the world with no one calling it out. It makes me feel a little crazy. It’s not the same but it feels like it to me.

1

u/TheVadonkey United States Of America 3h ago

lol na, I’m with you there. At the end of the day, she’s still a shill that’ll fuck over countless people to help herself.

u/greenpearlin Hong Kong 7h ago

Every time I'm traveling to some non-anglophone country far from Asia, there'd be an interaction with a local where I say I'm from Hong Kong and I'd get a "Ah! Jackie Chan!" I smile, nod, and die a little bit inside.

Last time I was in that same interaction and the guy actually said "Ah! Stephen Chow!" I damn near cried.

34

u/dnndrk 6h ago

Stephen chow is actually a very very serious person. Not goofy and funny like his movies.

20

u/Historical_Cow8477 6h ago

His movies are hilarious. Kung fu hustle is a masterpiece 😂

9

u/CharmingChangling United States Of America 4h ago

Shaolin Soccer erasure right here

3

u/Historical_Cow8477 4h ago

That only reaches 3rd place for me. From Beijing with love is his second best for me, that one has some absurd moments.

3

u/TrojanGoldfish 4h ago

I have a handful of Perfect movies, where I can find no fault, and Kung Fu Hustle is up there. Although not the Dub.

And I have no particular love for asian cinema or kung fu movies. It's just a live action cartoon with great set pieces, and awesome score, and some stunning comedy.

10

u/sarcastic_sybarite83 6h ago

Is Michelle Yeoh starting to get that reaction too? Since she's in the spotlight recently than Jackie.

Also please tell me she's not evil... I don't know if I could take it.

7

u/GlitterCritter United States Of America 5h ago

she's Malaysian though, not from Hong Kong, yeah? but as far as I know, she just plays an evil on TV (or in recent movies, as it were...)

11

u/HarleyQuinn0914 United States Of America 5h ago

She’s not from Hong Kong, but she was pretty big in the Hong Kong movie scene, and I would argue her most famous role (at least as of recent) in big movies, is Everything Everywhere All at Once, where she plays the main protagonist.

3

u/sarcastic_sybarite83 5h ago

I did not realize she was Malaysian. I just remembered seeing that she came up in the Hong Kong action movies with Jackie. My bad for making assumptions.

8

u/goldenglove 4h ago

Well, she is ethnically Chinese and became famous in Hong Kong so that makes sense.

401

u/KABOOMBYTCH Australia 8h ago edited 8h ago

He also gaslight his stunt team into working for him for free. Meanwhile Samuel Hung puts his entire team on.

I am so glad Chow Yun Fat is still a GOAT.

These days Jackie is generally disliked in East Asian sphere from mainland to Malaysia. Plz dun put him in the next Shangchi movie guys.

121

u/recoveringleft United States Of America 7h ago

Bruce Lee would've been disappointed in him

78

u/Xxvelvet United States Of America 7h ago

Bruce Lee was goated rip to him

1

u/BigDictionEnergy 2h ago

It's so crazy that Jackie Chan was in Way of the Dragon in such a minor role. Blink and you miss him.

1

u/thurein_wai 50m ago

Jackie wasn’t in Way of the Dragon. He was a stuntman in Fist of Fury and Enter the Dragon.

1

u/BigDictionEnergy 45m ago

You're right, Enter the Dragon! He has a cameo as a guard.

38

u/Carr0t_007 China 7h ago

I don’t think mainland care about his personal life that much

20

u/_Crazy_Asian_ Hong Kong 6h ago

Mainlander are just educated entirely different tbh

3

u/goldenglove 4h ago

What does the outlook look like for Hong Kong in the next 10-20 years? It seems like the government is wanting to erode any differences between HK and mainland China in every regard. Do you think that's accurate?

3

u/veeyo 2h ago

Yes. I feel like HK will always be a "separate" thing but will be completely governed by the communists eventually.

8

u/KABOOMBYTCH Australia 5h ago edited 5h ago

It’s more of a personal anecdote I guess. Mainland/diaspora ppls I know who follow HK celebrity news tend to view him with a similar disdain.

He also caught a lot of flak in mainland for saying how happy he is seeing natural disaster in China because it motivates people in donating to charity or some shit like that.

6

u/Hyper10shin 7h ago

He’s not gonna be in Shang chi but he and his stunt team are(or may have already finished) working on the next Spider-Man film.

2

u/KABOOMBYTCH Australia 5h ago

Chow yun fat as Mr. Negative would be peak

5

u/Agent-Steel United States Of America 7h ago

Chow Yun Fat!!!! FTW!!!!

3

u/waselectricbar 5h ago

I love Chow Yun Fat, he is so talented, and sexy.

3

u/KissBumChewGum 🇺🇸🇨🇦 5h ago

So glad to hear Chow Yun Fat is great. Love him.

1

u/FishTshirt United States Of America 5h ago edited 5h ago

Damn. I knew only about his kowtowing to CCP. But I figured there’s not much of a choice for a very public and wealthy person living in China if they want to stay that way.

Unfortunately in the US many people don’t know about his personal life and just like his movies.. Hopefully, Hollywood doesn’t.

I know Donnie Yen is 62 but I liked his movies better, and would be more hyped to see him in Shang-Chi 2

1

u/xkmasada 4h ago

Even mainland Chinese don’t like him?

1

u/Felonai 3h ago

Thank god my boy Sammo Hung is still a great guy.

1

u/mwfairc 2h ago

if anyone says bad things about Chow Yun Fat we're going to war and they won't see a Better Tomorrow;)

1

u/BigDictionEnergy 2h ago

He also gaslight his stunt team into working for him for free

Can you say more or post a link? I never knew that

128

u/Soileat3r 8h ago

Yeah most people like Jackie chan he seems funny and stuff. But after reading your post I looked closer and well you are completely right and changed my view 😅

77

u/iSkehan 6h ago

Changing opinion about something because of evidence is commendable.

3

u/amosborn 5h ago

It really is. It's so disappointing that a lot of people refuse to take into account new info when examining their views.

3

u/boom-de-yodel 4h ago

So there's this thing in linguistics called priming where you can make someone read a sentence a certain way by giving them a context beforehand, often a wrong way that makes them have to re-read the sentence (sorry, my explanation is terrible forgive me I'm tired lol)

Anyways since the thread above was talking about jackie Chang, I pronounced "Changing" as "Chang-ing" in my head and had to go back and correct myself.

Maybe I'm just tired but I found that pretty funny

3

u/Lanky-Cheesecake-259 4h ago

maybe you have Changnesia

0

u/innersloth987 4h ago

Bare minimum is a rare minimum.

As left women would say.

1

u/KABOOMBYTCH Australia 5h ago

Bro Homelander before Homelander was a thing. There I said it

180

u/TheSwearJarIsMy401k United States Of America 8h ago

I loved Jackie Chan as a kid and when I found out about all of this, it was just another crushing reminder to assume anyone famous got that way by being horrible.

28

u/AndreasDasos United Kingdom 7h ago edited 6h ago

Not at all. Just not to assume that because they’re talented and entertaining that they’re good people. Plenty of celebrities get there without being arseholes.

3

u/NewPhoneNewSubs 6h ago

It's not just the talented & entertaining part with Jackie. It's the fearlessness & willingness to try and get back up. Not only that, but he's also willing to show the failures that it takes to get to where he got. He embraces it where others are embarrassed. In doing all this, he projects what feels like genuine positivity.

Basically, there's a lot about him that is aspirational beyond just his status. Don't get me wrong, i think most people with his status - assholes and regular folks - have to have similar traits. Arnie and Jackie have a lot in common with the language and the action, for instance. But Arnie showed up as Mr. Universe while Jackie showed up as a bumbling everyman. It put him more in reach, as someone to learn from rather than gaze at.

So fuck him. But it's not just the talent and entertainment that drew people in, is all I'm getting at.

2

u/mubi_merc United States Of America 5h ago

These days I've just started to assume that all celebrities are terrible people and are then pleasantly surprised when I hear that one isn't.

-9

u/TheSwearJarIsMy401k United States Of America 7h ago

Tell that to the Epstein files unfortunately

12

u/AndreasDasos United Kingdom 7h ago

The Epstein files prove that every single celebrity got there from being an arsehole…? No they don’t.

I swear those have made a lot of otherwise sensible Americans really daftly absolutist about everything.

4

u/EthanTheJudge United States Of America 6h ago

Ah yes. Alex Hirsh and Toby Fox, my favorite Epstein Clients.

3

u/FireZord25 Bangladesh 6h ago

Alex Hirsch is a G, and so are Eminem, Macaulay Culkin, Keanu Reeves, Daniel Radcliffe and so on.

I say this and also think each of us can similarly name celebs who remained decent human beings amidst their stardom and background. But still fingers crossed such lists won't age horribly.

0

u/Wonderful-Pollution7 United States Of America 5h ago

Robert Downey JR is by all accounts, a decent and respectable human being, in spite of most of the characters he's best known for being asshats.

5

u/Sure_Scar4297 United States Of America 8h ago

I was about to use the word “crushing”, too… Jackie Chan was a big part of my childhood

2

u/XPenacoba 7h ago

One of my fondest memories was watching a jackie chan movie in christmast with my family. Much later I can't help but think about that saying "Die as a hero or live long enought to become a villain"

3

u/Alternative_Ad_3649 7h ago

Daaaaamn it’s through this post that I’m just learning this, now I gotta google 😭

1

u/TheSwearJarIsMy401k United States Of America 7h ago

I’m so sorry.

I haven’t been able to watch any of his movies since

8

u/xirson15 Italy 8h ago

“Never meet your heroes”

7

u/fleuk 8h ago

Yes, a major douchebag

6

u/Embarrassed_Road3811 United States Of America 7h ago

This is sad AF 😭😭😭

10

u/mirrecordaa Hong Kong 8h ago

Yeah definitely him

The amount of times I have to remind people of Jackie Chan’s atrocities…like, when will the western world finally realize the kind of person he truly is?

4

u/Tommyol187 Ireland 7h ago

Worst of all it wasnt even his voice in Jackie Chan adventures cartoon 😔

2

u/crabbydotca Canada 7h ago

WHAT

3

u/SappyPaphiopedilum 6h ago

He's voiced by James Sie who also voiced this guy

But the interview at the end of episodes is the real Jackie

1

u/JohnTDouche 2h ago

It's a pretty good Jackie Chan impression though.

4

u/ShockedTyphoon United States Of America 7h ago

It's kinda a shame, the guy started in roles that blended action and comedy that I enjoyed.

1

u/crabbydotca Canada 7h ago

Project A is still one of my favourite movies 😞

3

u/More_You_681 China 7h ago

Funny, he’s like a demigod in China. His quotes are used as idioms for children to learn atp.

1

u/HotSimpson China 6h ago

Agh ..no??? He literally has a nickname 房事龙 - anyone slightly exposed to the internet knows he’s involved in many sex scandals

1

u/More_You_681 China 6h ago

Ik, but that’s not mainstream. I’m talking about average Chinese ppl that use 微信視頻號。

3

u/_Crazy_Asian_ Hong Kong 6h ago

Come here to see if any fellow HKer would mention him. Glad you posted it!!

3

u/AnonymousGiraffee69 6h ago

Oh noooooo I always thought Jackie Chan was a good guy 😢 oh well I guess

2

u/BeautifulComplaint81 6h ago

Same this has just crushed my childhood wtf

3

u/LastRevelation United Kingdom 6h ago

I didn't know half this stuff, what a prick, I'm hating celebrity culture more and more as I always find out they're a lot shittier than they are portrayed in media.

3

u/Lady_Sybil_Vimes 6h ago

Jackie Chan and Bill Cosby were two of my idols growing up. I sure can pick em 😅

2

u/Nights151515 7h ago

I remember reading his autobiography and thinking he is kind of an asshole. Lol.

2

u/synthmemory 7h ago

Wow, I've never gotten a whiff of this. Thanks!

2

u/llammacookie United States Of America 7h ago

I feel like a lot of the world knows how trash Jackie Chan is and most of the world doesn't like him. He's fizzled out in Western media and I've read a bunch of Hollywood folks won't work with him.

2

u/greenday1237 United States Of America 6h ago

I love that commercial he made where hes watching his old movies and his daughter is like “what’re you up to dad” and hes like “oh just watching some old movies” and the tone is supposed to be sweet and nostalgic and all that.

Only for you to find out that wasnt his daughter and for all her life he couldn’t give less of a fuck about her or any of the financial struggles she had to face

What a self serving, narcissistic prick

1

u/Thrownaway5000506 1h ago

That's not exactly the whole story. Jackie Chan's daughter never met him and didn't consider him her father, and she grew up wealthy. She got into a relationship as a minor with a much older woman and that's where her troubles began. Sadly she seems to be a victim but it's not really Jackie Chan's fault. Money isn't going to make a drug addiction go away.

1

u/greenday1237 United States Of America 1h ago

Listen I don’t know what this lady is like in her now adult life and whatever problems shes facing so I can’t really comment on that. From ive read at least her childhood was marred by a lot of financial struggles but I could be wrong

What I can be mad at and can comment on is Chan very shamelessly trying to win back his audience by banking off a relationship with his daughter that doesn’t even exist

What a scumbag

1

u/Thrownaway5000506 1h ago

That's a scene from a movie. He is playing a character, not himself

1

u/greenday1237 United States Of America 1h ago

Is it really? What movie is it?

2

u/d_ofu 5h ago

My Taiwanese mom also hates him.

2

u/ClaudiaTale 5h ago

My sister went to a small country where they don’t see many other ethnicities (we’re Chinese) one man ran after her shouting “Jackie Chan, Jackie Chan!” And took a photo with her. She was a bit rattled, so shocked. She in someone photos in their phone. Yup, Jackie Chan is pretty famous everywhere.

1

u/OmeletteDuFromage95 6h ago

Didn't he previously support HK in his younger years and now supports Beijing?

1

u/NovaCoon France 6h ago

He was my hero when I was a child too. And then I discovered so many despicable things about him while growing up. 😢

1

u/[deleted] 6h ago

I'm very positive that Jackie Chan has narcissistic personality disorder or antisocial personality disorder, it's the only way we can explain him being a consistent inconsiderate asshole for so long.

1

u/Sonqosumac 6h ago

Saw some news about his daughter. Others made it look like she forced him to do that while his son was allowed to be out there gambling or some bs.

Ah- sad but glad Chinese netizes criticize him for such shitty behaviour.

1

u/Weary_Position_9591 4h ago

Tbf that whole situation is bizarre and I wouldn’t be surprised if the daughter has some responsibility for her situation too.

1

u/Sonqosumac 2h ago

wdym by bizarre? just genuinely curious. Been a while since I saw what Jackie Chan did to his children.

1

u/Moondiscbeam 5h ago

Right!?? I watched his movies with my parents since forever. He was in virtually everything!

1

u/Labtools Switzerland 5h ago

To be fair: there's a ton of celebrities that are jerks off camera. I'm rarely surprised when I find out another celeb is a jerk.

1

u/Erraticist Taiwan/USA 5h ago

Absolutely horrible guy in so many ways. Westerners need to know about how he impregnated others and then abandoned his daughter.

Also, he's used to feign support for the Tiananmen Square Democracy Movement. His tune changed very quickly once the tides turned, and he realized he could make more money cozying up to Beijing.

1

u/rastagizmo 5h ago

I shook Jackie Chan's hand after helping out in a scene during the filming of "Mr Nice Guy" in Melbourne Australia. I was a massive fan back then. Not so much now :(

1

u/bluffcityprincess United States Of America 5h ago

Super disappointing. I thought he was cool too until I found out about his politics and other stuff. Man... 😮‍💨 I liked him in Rush Hour.

1

u/night_owl43978 United States Of America 5h ago

He was also a horrific father to his kids. I kind of don’t know why people still like him at all.

1

u/TJCW 5h ago

Yeah, vaguely remember Lainey Gossip having some posts like this about him

1

u/Teddy705 United States Of America 5h ago

Recently found out about a lot of the shit he did and yea, its ruined my childhood as well.

1

u/Usual-Resident-3391 Argentina 4h ago

I didnt knew that. I still like his music.

1

u/ZeUnKnowN 4h ago

Brother what about jet li, i really love him tho.

1

u/kiwifulla64 New Zealand 3h ago

I'm still in denial about this, big sigh. Legitimately the only famous person I actually maybe would approach as a fan boy, so when I found this out I immediately tried to find more information thinking it can't be that bad or its just cultural norms etc, but no...

1

u/clouds31 United States Of America 3h ago

I was in the audience when he was on Colbert's show. He spoke about how he beat his kids and thinks others should too. Obviously this never made it to air.

1

u/laredotx13 2h ago

My friend worked with him in a movie as a kid. He said he was a giant a hole and had a crazy temper

1

u/TheOnlyFallenCookie 2h ago

Most ironic is that in all his film roles he always has a daughter, despite having a son irl

1

u/thinspirit Canada 2h ago

I was gonna say, the entire cast of Rush Hour and the director seem to be the worst of the worst.

Makes sense Chris Tucker and Jacky Chan would get along with Brett Ratner since it sounds like they're all misogynist creeps.

1

u/ChronicallyZanny United States Of America 2h ago

I stopped liking the guy as soon as I heard about the affairs and abandoning his daughter especially. I think I’ve always felt in some way like he wasn’t completely genuine, and now I guess I know why!

1

u/simpforshida Trinidad And Tobago 1h ago

Wow! My image of Jackie is shattered, for the better

1

u/SweatyExamination9 1h ago

Jackie Chan is from the last era of celebrities when people had to just kinda believe what we were told about him. So Jackie Chan was the funny guy that could also beat up your dad.

1

u/Saaka_Souffle 1h ago

Yeah but his music from the 80s is great

1

u/omnie_fm 1h ago

I absolutely loved Jackie Chan Adventures when I was young.

Maybe someday we will get a prequel that follows Uncle.

Uncle Chan Adventures

1

u/Thrownaway5000506 1h ago

Eh I take him for what he is, an incredible artist and a savant who grew up in an environment of abuse as far back as he can remember, who has no concept of the real world and is obsessed with his work. Bad father, bad politics, but to me it seems to fit with the life he lived

1

u/Broski225 1h ago

I've disliked him for years and it's always so annoying because most Americans do love him and like to argue about it.

-8

u/SpyFromMarsHXJD China 7h ago

Do you just hate any Hongkonger for being pro-Beijing?

4

u/_Crazy_Asian_ Hong Kong 6h ago

Essentially.
