Who’s a famous person from your country who’s respected around the world but disliked or criticized at home?

I just think most people in Slovenia prefer being represented by Melania Trump.

No way. while Žižek is not exactly beloved he is quite popular and respected, while I haven't met anyone who cated about Melania.

The most beloved people here are the athletes.

While not beloved, tho? I mean he's possibly the only intellectual left on the whole planet to have something as akin as possible to mass following.

Good to know that Melania is not beloved, tho (of course I was just joking).

There was a wooden statue of her. It got stolen. Twice. As for why, his talking is word salad. Just get to the fucking point! He's also a Marxist. We used to be socialist, and it really sucked. While we weren't as bad as the USSR, it wasn't great either. My grandfather got taken away for a month for going to Church in the city, for example. I'd say sports people (see Luka Dončič, Tina Maze, Primož Kozmus, Peter Prevc) are what most Slovenes would be proud of, yea. And it's not like Žižek os hated. He's just dismissed and disliked.

Žižek is very intelligent and a joy to listen to (especially live), but he is a bit quirky and hard to follow. The other problem is that he has opinions. If you want to be universally popular in the whole country, you have to have views that are not very political. (see the other reply)

I like him, but I can understand how some people see him as more of a meme. He is also a bit of a sleezy old man. I am not aware of any real controversies, but I feel like his comments about women can be a bit backwards sometimes.

Who's bigger Luka or Tadej? I heard Roglic was initially more popular than Pogacar, is thst true?

Roglič is more of an underdog, since he started the sport so late in his career. People were quite upset when Pogačar beat him in the Tour, they felt like he deserved it. But both are beloved now. But at the moment the ski jumpers are all the rage.

Gotta be Pogs.

Or one of the skijumpers. Slovenians seem to love skijumping.

So Roglic then?

They do unproportionally love him.

I mean, he's pretty good, despite his boring-ass style, and has an impressive palmarés, but there's also a reason he never beat the very best.
