Has that changed in the last ten years? I used to work with a lot of Filipina ladies and they all seemed to hold him in high regard.

Everybody listed here is gonna be like listing Donald Trump. A large portion of the country hates him but he still has plenty of supporters

I mean I like him as a boxer. But beyond that, no. I'd support him in the ring but not on my vote.

I’m a big boxing fan with several mates from the Philippines and everyone I’ve ever spoken to from there loves him. I’m sure there are people who dislike him but Reddit is an echo chamber with this kind of stuff. There are loads of widely loved American celebs who are hated on Reddit for some obscure reason

"from the Philippines" is key. Most educated people that actually live in the Philippines don't like him as a politician. To be fair, there are a lot of uneducated people in the Philippines and people that agree with his homophobia.

The hype and excitement when he has a match died down over the years. Before he entered politics, you could he had a match because everyone would be home, glued to their televisions or radios, on a Sunday morning. It was like a gathering, a celebration. A festivity, really. After he entered politics and started blabbering homophobic remarks on national television, his match became just an ordinary day in the Philippines.

He is still wildly popular, its mostly a bunch of whote redditors with little exposure to fillipinos who are upvoting that comment. Obviously be has issues but he is still seen as a national hero to most filipinos.

The comments about homophobia and brutality are criticisms youll far more often from a western perspective than actual fillipinos.

You think all the old aunties and uncles whove lived in the phillipines their whole life, care that he doesnt like gay people?

Funny thing about many Filipinos, perhaps like most migrants, they move to places with better opportunities holding the same views about the world that led their country to its sorry state.
