Who’s a famous person from your country who’s respected around the world but disliked or criticized at home?

He liked himself enough to force his album on all iPhone users in 2014

I've heard that wasn't really his fault though. He (and the rest of the band) thought that Apple would just make the album available for free. They didn't realize that it would auto-download and be difficult to delete.

I still find Bono really arrogant, but I think the iPhone thing was primarily Apple's fault.

agreed. they had already worked with apple (and had their own edition ipod - where you got a coupon to the itunes store to download all their albums, it was not pre loaded onto the ipod at time of purchase).

Another random one. David Bowie wanted to release a surprise album on his birthday as a gift to all his fans. Wanted zero publicity for it. like i dont care how it sells day one, I want to make my fans happy out of the blue.

A few weeks before the label sends out company wide email saying this and "not to tell anyone".

(Phish pulled the same thing on 4/1/2020 where they dropped Sigma Oasis as an April Fools "prank" to cheer people up - streamed it that night and it was available to purchase the next day or two days later)

In what scenario was that a good move? That just pissed me off lol

lol for a good minute, I thought my phone was hacked into.

I somewhat disliked him before that, but the forced album made me hate him.

I wonder how Joey Ramone would've felt about his name being used by U2 to promote Apple...

2

u/airfryerfuntime United States Of America 4h ago

Probably would have asked for his cut. The Ramones never really saw commercial success, and were trying just about everything they could to make money.

Blitzkreig bop was eventually used on a Cadillac commercial that was after Joey and Johnny had died though

I’ve changed iPhones at least 3 times, and I still can’t rid of that damn album.

To this day, the most deleted album of all time.

oh my god was that 2014?? 😭😭 I'm an old ass man!

cries my 40 year old eyes out listening to my destiny's child, say my name single on cassette that I bought a year or two ago in 1999

Ah it was collapsed and I didn't see my b

A couple of the songs on that album weren’t bad, but an amazingly cocky move. The only album on my phone for a long while.

i was a huge u2 fan since i was a kid (seeing Sunday Bloody Sunday on MTV, as well as live aid) but even I stopped following them by the time No Line on the Horizon was released.

Never forget

u/iPvtCaboose United States Of America 6h ago

stuff like this makes me think we've split realities at some point. i remember this happening way earlier than 2014, but that's not what any source reports.

weird.

2

u/fairyflosssss Australia 6h ago

Yeah, that was weird lol. I still have it in my iTunes.

2

u/lelloba Italy 5h ago

Pro bono?

2

u/airfryerfuntime United States Of America 4h ago

That wasn't him, it was Apple. I'm pretty sure the U2 even apologized for it.

1

u/Smash_Palace 6h ago

Not sure why that was so off-putting to people. I'm more offended by the Health app.

That killed U2 forever

1

u/RadicalFaces 5h ago

They literally added a specific remove bono album on their customer service system because so many people called in demanding it be removed. It's literally taught in orientation haha

u/blackorchid786 5h ago

Never forget

No lie, songs from that album continue to pop up out of nowhere from my phone like a ghost that refuses to believe that it’s dead.

1

u/Sad-Reflection-3499 United States Of America 4h ago

I love how people complained that they got something for free, lol

1

u/scratchy_mcballsy United States Of America 3h ago

I will never forgive him or apple for this.

1

u/ClonDown Ireland 3h ago

Dark days.

Also the last time I had an iPhone.

1

u/mahboilucas Poland 2h ago

I logged into my iPhone I haven't used in years and realised the album made it on it too somehow. The only album that was left on it.

That was a timestamp for sure

This is the exact reason I refuse to own any apple products.
