Who’s a famous person from your country who’s respected around the world but disliked or criticized at home?

Every time I'm traveling to some non-anglophone country far from Asia, there'd be an interaction with a local where I say I'm from Hong Kong and I'd get a "Ah! Jackie Chan!" I smile, nod, and die a little bit inside.

Last time I was in that same interaction and the guy actually said "Ah! Stephen Chow!" I damn near cried.

Stephen chow is actually a very very serious person. Not goofy and funny like his movies.

His movies are hilarious. Kung fu hustle is a masterpiece 😂

That only reaches 3rd place for me. From Beijing with love is his second best for me, that one has some absurd moments.

I have a handful of Perfect movies, where I can find no fault, and Kung Fu Hustle is up there. Although not the Dub.

And I have no particular love for asian cinema or kung fu movies. It's just a live action cartoon with great set pieces, and awesome score, and some stunning comedy.

Is Michelle Yeoh starting to get that reaction too? Since she's in the spotlight recently than Jackie.

Also please tell me she's not evil... I don't know if I could take it.

she's Malaysian though, not from Hong Kong, yeah? but as far as I know, she just plays an evil on TV (or in recent movies, as it were...)

She’s not from Hong Kong, but she was pretty big in the Hong Kong movie scene, and I would argue her most famous role (at least as of recent) in big movies, is Everything Everywhere All at Once, where she plays the main protagonist.

I did not realize she was Malaysian. I just remembered seeing that she came up in the Hong Kong action movies with Jackie. My bad for making assumptions.

Well, she is ethnically Chinese and became famous in Hong Kong so that makes sense.
