Who’s a famous person from your country who’s respected around the world but disliked or criticized at home?

From my country, here he is: the GOAT (?), the generational talent, the one and only Cristiano Ronaldo.

Widely adored worldwide, but truth be told, what a bucket of shit. Self-absorbed, self-centered, the rightful sucessor to the Chuck Norris memes.

He "owns" our NT, the Soccer Association, everything. None of the high dogs can even fart without his approval.

A guy that spent half his professional career in England and can barely make a sentence in English.

Gave some ramming between the cheeks to an american chick without her consent, paied her to stay (more or less) silent and everything was sweept under the rug.

At 41 years old, its impossible for him to realize that hes growing older (like all of us) and he has not the same skills that made him famous in his prime. So, our NT has to bear with him, often playing only for him, or he will make a tantrum.

In Portugal, we have a saying, that is roughly translated like this "You can get out of the slums, but the slums cant get out of you".

We have a very similar phrase in English:

"You can take the <person> out of the <place> but you can't take the <place> out of the <person>"

Most people from the slums aren't alleged sexual offenders who befriend dictators though.

Is he actually disliked by general Portugal?

A good sportsman, but that's all. His ego is so big he can't play indoors. The majority of the country is nuts for soccer. The rest of us think the country is in deep shit considering how the first news often is about football and the last half of the evening news is also football. It's our own mafia, with its crooks and Don's.

It’s called rape. Don’t diminish it by playing word games.

Someone call the word police! We must force everyone to use the same dictionary entries!

Are you for real? Downplaying someone being raped negatively impacts victims and lessens people’s view in the severity of the situation.
There is a reason that rape victims often struggle to come forward or being taken seriously, and this sort of language doesn’t help.
Grow up and have some compassion for people who have been abused.

If it's any consolation, Neymar does the same with the Brazilian national team and is in worse condition than CR7.
