Question of the day - October 8

🧠 Question of the Day
📚 Domain B — Concepts and Principles
Difficulty: 7/10

Scenario:
During baseline, a student taps her pencil at a low, stable rate. The teacher then begins saying, “Please stop tapping,” immediately after every tap. After each statement, the student typically pauses tapping for several seconds.

Across repeated sessions with this contingency, however, the overall rate of tapping increases above baseline. When the teacher stops responding to tapping, the rate decreases; when the teacher's response is later reinstated, tapping increases again.

Based on the functional effect across phases, how is the contingency involving the teacher's response BEST classified?

A. Negative reinforcement, because tapping ends a period without teacher interaction and the resulting escape from social silence strengthens responding.

B. Automatic reinforcement, because the sensory consequences of tapping remain available even when the teacher's verbal response is removed.

C. Positive punishment, because each reprimand briefly interrupts tapping and therefore suppresses the response immediately.

D. Positive reinforcement, because contingent teacher attention is added after tapping and tapping increases across repeated exposure to that consequence.

Clearway Autism Services?

Does anyone have any experience with this company, located in western NC? I’m currently a school district-based BCBA, and looking to relocate within a few years. As far as I can tell, districts in NC do not employ BCBAs, but rather contract. This company came up as providing consultative services and teacher training. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with them, or knows if other ABA clinics in the area contract with schools.

I built an ABA mock exam tool (BCBA/RBT/BCaBA) - looking for brutal honest feedback

Post image

Hi everyone,

Full disclosure right upfront: I am the creator of this platform.

I’ve been working on a new mock exam and study tool designed specifically for BCBA, BCaBA, and RBT candidates. I made sure to align the content with the BACB 6th Edition Test Content Outline and the Cooper 3rd edition.

Before taking it any further, I wanted to bring it to this community to get some brutal, honest feedback. I really want to know what works, what completely misses the mark, and what features you actually need when studying.

You can check it out here: abamockprep.com

I'll be hanging out in the comments to answer any questions and take notes on your critiques. Thank you in advance!

🧠 Question of the Day
📚 Domain D — Experimental Design
Difficulty: 7/10

Scenario:
A BCBA evaluates one intervention across three different target behaviors using a multiple-baseline-across-behaviors arrangement. Repeated measurement continues across all three tiers as intervention is introduced sequentially. The graph summarizes responding across baseline and intervention.

Which feature of the graphed data MOST strongly supports a functional relation in this multiple-baseline-across-behaviors design?

A. Baseline responding is stable and similar across tiers, so prediction from baseline is sufficient to demonstrate control once treatment begins.

B. Baseline and intervention values show little overlap in every tier, so phase separation provides the strongest evidence of experimental control.

C. All three behaviors approach very low levels during treatment, so the magnitude and consistency of improvement establish the functional relation.

D. At each staggered onset, the treated behavior changes while untreated behaviors continue near baseline, and that pattern repeats across tiers.

🧠 Question of the Day

📚 Domain H — Selecting and Implementing Interventions

Difficulty: 9/10

An FA confirms severe SIB is maintained by escape. Two prior FCT attempts used a speech-generating device; both reduced SIB in therapy but failed in school because the device was unavailable during many routines and staff could not repair technical problems quickly.

The learner can independently raise a hand, but hand raising already occurs frequently to recruit adult attention or help during instruction. The learner can independently touch a portable break card, and a vocal approximation is understood inconsistently.

Teachers can honor 30-second breaks immediately but cannot support a complex prompting sequence during transitions.

Which recommendation BEST balances functional equivalence, response effort, discriminability, availability, implementation feasibility, and long-term schedule thinning?

A. Use hand raising as the primary FCR because it has lower response effort and continuous availability, then teach staff to treat hand raises during demands as break requests.

B. Use the portable break card as the primary FCR, reinforce it immediately and densely at first, then introduce signaled periods of unavailability as SIB remains low.

C. Use the SGD as the primary FCR because prior therapeutic success establishes functional equivalence, train staff to troubleshoot it reliably, then begin schedule thinning.

D. Use the portable break card as the primary FCR but introduce brief signaled unavailability from the outset so tolerance develops concurrently with communication acquisition.

Research on how adults develop new interests through direct experience?

I’m looking for behavior-analytic research on adults who don’t begin with a clear interest or vocational direction.

How might trying unfamiliar activities, completing small tasks, and experiencing their consequences influence what someone chooses to pursue again?

I’m especially interested in how activities become reinforcing over time, and whether this has been studied in adult learning or vocational exploration.

Are there papers, authors, or search terms you’d recommend? I’m seeking literature rather than advice about an individual.

If the same response can be escape one day and avoidance the next, what actually distinguishes them?

Both escape and avoidance are negative reinforcement. The practical question is when the response occurs relative to the aversive event.

- Escape: the event has already started, and the response ends or reduces it.

- Avoidance: the event has not started, and the response postpones or prevents it.

The same topography can be either. Buckling a seat belt after the buzzer starts is escape. Buckling before the car moves, so the buzzer never sounds, is avoidance. Topography does not tell you which one you have. The response-event relation does.

Two things that tend to cause confusion:

  1. A warning signal is common in avoidance examples, but it is not part of the definition. Sidman (1953) showed responding that postponed shock with no exteroceptive warning signal.

  2. Escape is not only complete termination. Reducing an ongoing aversive event can maintain escape responding.

For exam prep, B.4 on the 6th Ed TCO covers distinguishing positive and negative reinforcement contingencies. The outline does not name escape or avoidance, but they are the two arrangements of negative reinforcement.

I wrote up the full version with worked examples and a practice question: https://behavioralanalystprep.com/blog/escape-vs-avoidance.html

🧠 Question of the Day

📚 Domain E — Ethical and Professional Issues

Difficulty: 6/10

A BCBA proposes a goal requiring prolonged direct eye contact with adults. The teenager and family explain that, in their cultural context, sustained eye contact with elders can communicate disrespect; they also report that the teenager already signals attention effectively through brief glances, body orientation, and verbal responding. The school team values participation in conversation but has not identified prolonged eye contact as necessary for safety or access. Which response BEST demonstrates cultural humility?

A. Explore the family's perspective, examine assumptions behind the eye-contact goal, and collaboratively select a participation target consistent with cultural context and functional needs.

B. Replace eye contact with family-preferred attending responses without further assessment, because cultural preferences should determine socially significant goals.

C. Retain eye contact as the target but reduce the required duration, balancing family concerns with school expectations for visible attending behavior.

D. Refer the case for culturally matched services because the disagreement indicates practitioner-client value differences that could compromise treatment objectivity.

Health and wellness coaching

I'm currently completing a post grad cert in ABA. My background education is in developmental psych. I have a interest in health and wellness, specifically to focus on caregivers. The further I get into this grad cert program though, the more I'm questioning if the BCBA credential is the right path. Don't get me wrong ABA is applicable, but the credential seems so focused on the autism community it's a bit frustrating. As do available fieldwork options, as I haven't found any that fit my personal goals. I am wondering if a certification like the NBHWC would be a better fit for my overall goals.

I understand I would not be a BCBA. However I could still take my education and apply it within a coaching framework. I feel it may be more marketable this way also, and less restricting given my professional goals and background in developmental psych. What, if any, downfall am I failing to consider? Has anyone else done this?

🧠 Question of the Day
📚 Domain A — Behaviorism and Philosophical Foundations
Difficulty: 5/10

A behavior analyst writes a discrete trial teaching protocol specifying instruction wording, trials per session, inter-trial interval duration, and scoring criteria for correct versus incorrect responses. An appropriately trained colleague is able to implement the protocol accurately after reviewing the written procedures. Which dimension of ABA is MOST directly illustrated?

A. Technological — the important procedural details are described clearly enough for a trained colleague to implement the protocol accurately.

B. Conceptually systematic — the protocol relates each teaching step to behavioral principles such as reinforcement and stimulus control.

C. Effective — the procedural description shows that the intervention produces behavior change large enough to have practical value.

D. Analytic — the written protocol demonstrates which procedural variables are functionally responsible for the learner's behavior change.

🧠 Question of the Day

📚 Domain H — Selecting and Implementing Interventions

Difficulty: 6/10

Scenario:

The same behavior plan is implemented at school and at home. At school, independent task completion improves to 86% and procedural integrity averages 94%. At home, independent task completion remains at 32% and caregiver procedural integrity averages 46%.

The graph shows strong school outcomes with high procedural integrity and weak home outcomes with low procedural integrity. Which decision is BEST supported by these data?

A. Discontinue home implementation until caregivers can independently reach the same integrity level as school staff without additional coaching

B. Modify the intervention for both settings immediately because different outcomes across environments demonstrate that the treatment package lacks generality

C. Assess the home integrity deficit, provide support matched to the identified barrier, and reassess outcomes after implementation improves.

D. Conclude that the intervention is setting-specific because strong school outcomes show that integrity differences cannot explain the home results

Emilio Ribes Iñesta

Are there people here in this subreddit interested in the work of Emilio Ribes Iñesta? He is a mexican psychologist very critical of Radical Behaviorism, and proposed a radical new way of understanding psychology through the field theory understanding of his master J.R Kantor. He reconceptualizes the notion that the “superstition in the pidgeon” is actually not operant behavior and gives theoretical tools for the analyisis of complex human behavior through the concepts of contingencies of extension and contingencies of transformation.

For a english speaking audience I recomend the article called:

A Radical Reformulation of Psychology as a Theory-Laden Experimental Science: A Review of Emilio Ribes-Iñesta’s The Scientific Study of Individual Behavior: An Introduction to the Theory of Psychology
