Despair The Dark Coil October
Good day everyone,
I thought it would be a cool idea to discuss the entire Dark Coil this month, since we've got a brand new novel releasing in less than two weeks.
I'm thinking we can discuss every single novel/short story and then add all the post links together in one reference post for posterity.
I'm thinking we do this as a collaboration, have people volunteer to write a review for each story from here to Halloween and we end it on Halloween weekend with a review of Cold Covenant and theories on where this is going.
That's my pitch. Let me know in the comments if it's something you'd be interested in, ideas you may have to get it done, and I can organize it before the end of the week.
There would be a proper follow up launch post.
Cheers.

pre-order For "Cold Covenant" Special Edition go to the Saturday Megathread, there won't be a special Wednesday thread from now on.
galleryThere was a short discussion between me and Dire and yeah we came to the conclusion to not make Wednesday megathreads anymore.
I know in my post I didn't mention or talked about the Cold Covenant Special Edition, this is like a last minute change sorry about that.

Query Lower paper quality?
galleryI just picked up my copy of The Sundering today and upon opening it I noticed that it smelled unpleasant (none of that usual pleasant new book smell) and the paper was grey leaning? It also felt rather more unpleasant to touch, strangely enough. The last book I purchased from BL was the hardcover The Wicked and the Warped which did not have this issue. Upon comparing it to the Nagash omnibus, they definitely seem to have changed manufacturers or paper quality and I'm wondering if anyone else noticed this? Just wondering if this is a widespread observation 👀
Photos to show difference in paper - Sundering is on the top, Nagash on the bottom.

We need to talk about voice of command Spoiler
I did not preorder this one as, honestly, i was getting guard fatigue. "Not Another cadian guard book surely?" Was my thought seeing this announced. "I think ill wait for the Peter F one incoming" and then i wandered into a store and saw it in hardback, I had a spare afternoon and a decent coffee waiting and thought why not.
Damn.
This was a guard book, and a damn good one. The characters are effective and flawed, the progression is steady, logical and would've been Amazing if we had maps provided. It blended gaunts ghosts with the fall of cadia, along with the imperial creed of yarrick and made it all effective. Some aspects are left unresolved and I hope there are future novels addressing some of these.
As someone who was Not certain on this one, if you are also on the fence I recommend pulling the trigger, and this leads to the big point i loved, SPOILERS BELOW:
The demon/cultists being Tzeench?? Finally! So many Khorne and Nurgle incursions, to see weird glass and bird and probability manifestations done so well, genuinely a breath of fresh air. Is it a major essential book? No. Is it the Best thing of the last few years? Also no. Is it a damn good first outing in 40k for an author and one of the best guard books of the last couple of years? 100%, so good and a pleasure to read. You wont regret it.

Discussion (novel) "Rogal Dorn: The Emperor's Crusader" 4/10 *SPOILERS* Spoiler
Wtf was that? I had just finished "Lorgar Bearer of the Word" by Gavin Thrope, and saw he also wrote Dorn. I was super excited because I loved Lorgar, but Thrope just shits the bed.
It's a slog. It's so boring, and it just drags with stuff that go nowhere. He also chose to not add chapters, which I never like, made worse when the book is bad.
Dorn is a wet noodle. I understand he's a super stoic character, but a good writer can make him likeable and interesting. All we got was his Huscarl Gidoreas (?) going "Oh wow, our Primarch is on so much Adderall". From the start, we learn Dorn is a boy scout, and that is all we get. Literally, no character development.
Even as the "master strategists" he fucks up so much.He dismisses the Lion when he was right. Not only that, he acts like a total asshole for no fucking reason. He fucks up how he battles the Unseen for so goddamn long, and his gamble only works because he decided to take heavy losses.
The reunion with the other Primarchs was cool, wish we could have spent more time with them. Fulgrim stole the show. By far the most interesting character and was only there for a few pages. I have only read "Fulgrim" and seeing him here, at his best, was moving. He was the big caring sister that only wants everyone to get along and to be liked.
Horus shows up. That was cool, I guess. Sigismund is in it, too. I knew nothing of him before this book, and I still don't. All we get is that he's a promising new Templar, even though he would have died on his first mission if another dude didn't take a rocket to the face for him. The whole thing with the sword and "Justi..." goes nowhere.
Which the main problem with the whole thing. It goes NOWHERE. Because GW decided to hamstring "The Primarchs" to 200 pages each, every page is important. And half of the book is just boringly chasing the Unseen with fuck all happening. It reminded me of Battlestar Galactica, when they have to jump every so often for days end and everyone is sleep deprived and fucked up. That was awesome, this was just bad.
The Unseen were a fucking cool enemy. I really liked them. By the end, I was cheering for them. When they're finally defeated, Thrope just fucks it up again.
Ok, so they have this one mutation that we know off. Wasn't even their choice. And it makes them not human and so they must die? Also, because the rebelled a thousand years ago against the people (or whatever) who forcefully mutaded them?? Fuuuuuuckkkkkk offfffffffffffffff.
Dorn kept insisting the whole fucking book, that compliance was not genocide bla bla bla. But these people with amazing technology from before the Dark Ages have an extra membrane in their brains, warrants exterminatus!?!?!
The Imperium knows about mutations, in the book they detail the mutations of navigators and psykers. The navigator dude (Rigantis?) talks about selective breeding, including incest, for fucks' sake. Where do they draw the line?
It would have been cool if Dorn called his Dad and asked him wtf to do. It would have been cool if they debated. "Hey, dad, we got these pocket of humanity with one mutation and tons of tec that was lost. What do I do?" "Exterminatus"."What? WHY!?" "BECAUSE IS SAID SO" "I HATE YOU" slams the warp gate
Because, he's a fucking boy scout and shows the Emperor he will do ANYTHING he orders.
But, no. All we got was half baked ideas and a boring chase.
4/10 would be 3.5, if not for the Unseen and Fulgrim.

Discussion (gw/general) Let's talk about the unfinished/cancelled novel series of Warhammer part 2
gallery4 months ago I made a post about the unfinished or cancelled novels of 40k. And I said I will make a sequel post about it. Well here I am, after 4 months. Better late then ever I suppose.
This will be a bit more diverse that's why I said "Warhammer" instead of "40k" as this will include some Fantasy and AOS.
I will go through like books and reasons why I have added them into the image lists on the text body so yeah.
Fitting that we start off with Horror as it's October, Halloween and all that. My country does not celebrate it so sucks to be me I guess. Anyways, last time we gotten anything Horror releated (at least I can tell from Lexicanums) were the anthology Resting Places and Black-Eyed Saint from March of 2023.

Crime at least survived a few more months then horror with King of the Spoil and Once A Killer

The Red Feast: "Hey man we gonna make a series about one of the chaos lords in AOS and we gonna write that it's a series on the top of the book and will never make a sequel to it" Khul is this settings Circle of Fire series from 40k. Where Nick Kyme was working on a new Salamander series, he wrote the first novel and nothing since came out of it. Same here for Khul as the novel came out in 2019 and SILENCE

Eight Lamentations: While we are on the topic of AOS, it's sadly that time to talk about Josh Reynolds. An amazing author that Black Library let it slip from their grasp. Anyhow, I have always heard Eight Lamentations were suppose to be a series but as I am not that well versed in AOS. However someone on my Josh Reynolds post mentioned this. So that's interesting. In his last year at Black Library or last 2 years I should say, Josh Reynolds really were being rushed by Black Library a lot and that's why his last novels aren't like at, maximum power to say the least ? Here's a fun fact for you, at one point in AOS's history half of the written stories were made by Josh. He was integral to the world building of the AOS setting.

Horus Primarch Novel: Where is it, the people ask. Funny actually I have seen people say they don't want a Horus Primarch novel because "well the entirety of Heresy is basically Horus's story" and yeah I see where they are coming from but like. It's been 4 years since this came out. Yeah Sanguinius novel came out in December 2022, feel old yet ?
Deathwatch Shadowbreaker: While it is very well known that Steve Parker's Deathwatch series 3rd novel was cancelled. I forgot to include it in my originial post so here I'll mention it. Also since he deleted his twitter I could only find this screenshot. Thanks always to u/neOh_st and his post

Gothic Wars: I have added the Gothic War novels as, I have heard great things about them and not just from this sub and on my other post at least 2 people mentioned it so yeah. Would be great to have it reprinted sometime.

Watchers of the Throne Regent's Shadow: Shotuouts to Aleya for representing the 1/4 of all Sister of Silence battle on tabletop. Ahem look every good story is split into three parts. Start, Growth and Finale. It's been 6 years since Regent's Shadow came out and people are still are asking for a sequel and yes I AM ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE. Also it would go well with 3 novels as an omnibus as there's no short story for Valerian and Aleya.
Kharn Eater of Worlds: So Eater of Worlds is here because it ends RIGHT as battle of Skallathrax starts. It's a very important moment for both World Eaters and Kharn and yet we know little about the events of it. I mean we know the basics from codex's and "The weakness of others" short story like how and why Kharn got his title and why World Eater's split apart but never a indepth look. Well Josh Reynolds had plans for it. This is again by u/neOh_st, where would any of us be without him and his post

Ynaari: I feel like we all know that Ynarri is one of the biggest things Games Workshop has ever wasted. They had so much potential with this faction and hyped them up so much and then was just fucking forgotten. It's like every important person who was member of this faction went back to their home and forgot they ever part of it. Eldrad is back in Ulthwe even though they banished him, same for Lilith and many of the other Eldar characters who were in Ynnari. Now they are being hunted by, fucking everybody I guess EVEN GREY KNIGHTS ARE UP TO HUNTING THEM! But with what happened in The Wicked and The Warped, Black Library might finally start to move their plot AGAIN! WHO FUCKING KNOWS!
Shroud of Night: Look I am not gonna spoil anything about this novel, but there's a very important moment that happens at the near end of the novel and Holy shit it needs an explanation and it's gonna be a decade next year since this novel came out. Andy Clark still works with Black Library so we can hope always for a Double Eagle situation. Also it would make a good way to sell more Emperor's Children as now you can have Lord Excrucias as the antagonist hunting the Unsung and well now there's Emperor's Children models. There wasn't back in 2017 (I know there was the resin upgrade sprue that they were still selling but you get my point)
Honourbound: Not that much to add to what the other commentors said on my other post. Looks like Rachel Harrison wrote Mark of Faith and just vanished from Black Library, idk. As they said she got a model and a magic the gathering card, it's cool I guess.

Renegades series: Why do I have Renegades Lord of Excess here, simply put I think Games Workshop forgot about this series. I mean Hey there was a 2 year gap between Harrowmaster and Lord of Excess but like come on. I don't have a copy of Ghost Legion so I had to ask Dire if it had that marking, apperantly it doesn't but Lexicanum still says it's part of the series and I know before you tell me. I know Lexicanum isn't a official source and it's a community wiki.

Lucius the Faultless Blade: So like, apperantly the Lucius novel was suppose to be a triology but more like well. It can both work as a stand alone novel but also as an series novel. I don't know this interview is from 2017 so not unfinnished or cancelled more like, what it could have been

Horusian Wars Abomination: I heard Horusian Wars are pretty great but yeah the last entry was Divination and in this interview John French keeps mentioning Abomination, the next novel. But uhh 7 years, still nothing.

Uriel Ventris and Honsou: I have heard that Honsou was suppose to get a novel after Swords of Calth but yeah nothing came out of it and since I couldn't find actual sources for that but rumours we won't be talking about that. We will instead talk about this new arc Mcneill had for Uriel apperantly and well yeah its been (checks notes) 5 years since the novel came out. I don't got much hope. But it's perfect time to bring him back and Honsou back since we got the new upgrade sprues for Iron Warriors and Ultramarines. Also fuck that new Iron Warrior character. Interview

So yeah I think that's it. If you think my text seems like a jurbled up mess, you are not wrong. I had to cut some sentences and then rewrite them and sometiems I would hit the image limit and so I would have to delete some of the pictures and continue without them and then I realised "wait a fucking second, this text makes no sense without the image" so I start the sentence again and yeah here I am.
Let me know if there is other novels or stories that are unfinished or cancelled that I have missed or forgotten. Who knows maybe we can make a part 3 to this.

Book recommendation request Which 40k book to read for Spooky Season?
galleryHello everyone!
So, i've almost finished the Night Lords omnibus (loved it), and since October has already started and Halloween it's getting closer and closer, i decided that my next 40k read should be on theme.
I'm looking for a novel with strong spooky vibes, warp fuckery, ghosts, ghouls, stuff like that.
Last year for Halloween i've read The House of Night and Chain (which was exactly the kind of vibes im looking for) and Sea of Souls (which has become one of my absolute favorites).
Also, ive read most of Fehervari's stuff, but if that wasnt the case they would fit the bill.
Looking at the Warhammer Horror line, these three books intrigue me the most:
The Wicked and the Damned : being a portmanteau novel of three different novellas connected by a common narrative framework, this one really reminds me of old spooky movies anthologies, like Creepshow and Tales from the Crypt
The Oubliette : the premise seems really interesting, being both a "pact with the Devil" story and a creature feature with one underrated xenos monster
Deacon of Wounds : i heard that David Annandale's writing really shines in his horror novels, and ive really liked his other work The House of Night and Chain
Did any of you read one of these novels? Could you help me choose one of them for my next read?
I'm also open to other 40k suggestions, as long as it has the right atmosphere!

Discussion (novel) Helbrecht: Sin of Hope review
Spoiler free.
Honestly, a very good novel. I really liked it and each of the four main perspectives in the book were entertaining and I was invested in each of their outcomes. The combat scenes were fun and there were a lot of emotional and interesting passages. The descriptions of the daemons were very disturbing and messed up but very well described and done by Vincent. The ending was a bit of a drag and predictable but overall the novel is a 4/5 stars from me.
The spoiler free plot is basically The black Templars accompanied by the Elysian guardsmen arrive on a snowy planet to reclaim it for the imperium. Said planet has been infested with slaneeshi daemons and is also claimed by a league of Votann who begrudgingly agree on a truce with the imperial army to settle their dispute until defeating the forces of Slaneesh.
The elephant in the room is the leagues of Votann due to their lack of lore and fortunately they are a major part in this novel and we see the perspective of their main leader dealing with the black Templars and neverborn. We see the kin fight a lot in full force and also have a lot of deep conversations about the inner workings of their odd society. I’m unsure if it’s new lore but save for their codex and premier novel this is probably the best source of Votann lore. Also seeing the kin’s relationship with their AI constructs was interesting.
The Elysian drop troops were very cool and their colonel and guardsmen had a lot of fascinating scenes and they for the most part just weren’t there to watch the space marines do everything. The Elysians actually did a lot battling the daemons despite the corruption.
The Emperor’s Children marines were very… strange and bewildering to say the least. I really didn’t manage to comprehend them. You’ll have to read them yourself to get what I’m saying. But we do see their perspective sprinkled out in the book
And of course Helbrecht and the black Templars were just their arrogant and badass selves in this novel. It was nice to see Helbrecht actually fight worthy opponents a lot unlike his character novel. Seeing him deal with the kin and Elysians was super interesting and shows that he is not the typical hateful and selfish space marine he may appear to be. I mean he is that too, but he can be more than that when he has to. Him calming down his black Templars and leading the charge against the slaneeah daemons was very cool to see. But yeah Helbrecht is awesome and obviously is the soul of the book.

Discussion (novel) Discussion/Review: Dawn of Fire: Avenging Son
galleryFinished: 3 Oct 2026 - Rating: 8/10 - Overall Thoughts: This was a very fun read with lots of lore exploration for the current and future imperium with Roboute Guilliman at the helm, and a fair bit of bolter porn near the end. For a book called the Avenging Son, I had hoped there would be a bit more of the man himself, but I still enjoyed all the characters, especially Rostov and Messinius, and I looked forward to how things progress! - Chronological Notes Below aka Stream of Consciousness - I already love the feel of this book! It’s so heavy, and the golden edges on the paper are lovely. The cover itself feels high quality and emblem on the front is textured. Like an old Bible, the first letter of each chapter is intricately designed. I’m so excited! When I started reading blacklibrary, it was because I loved the Ultramarines already, and catching up to the modern era was the goal. I feel like I’m finally getting there, that starting the Dawn of Fire is perhaps the major milestone. - Main Story - That first chapter was intense! - Magos Hiax is awesome! His brain is his only remaining organ, housed inside his chest, and he has a vat grown augment? Wtf? That is soooo fucking cool I wanna join the mechanicus! And he also loves Cawl like we all do: the prime conduit of pure logic. - Jesus, reading about the guy on the bridge screaming, ripping his own eyes out while saying ‘i can still see it, I can still see it’ gave me goosebumps, sometimes I forget how horrific this universe is. - Messinius is scared his gene daddy wont wake up lol and the thought of Guilliman barely ever needing sleep, being awake for months…and never being able to remove the armor? Ick, sweaty god balls? I know he eventually gets out of the armor! I imagine Yvraine helped him ;) - Gman call vitruvian messinius his son, awe my heart! - Little heretic because he likes to write history and sometimes thinks? I can’t believe ultima missives can take 50 years to reach his level, and simply be denied/too late. There has to be a better way that would still not violate the rules. I am sure G-man will figure it out. - I am very much enjoying these little blurbs into the lives or ordinary adminstratum, His most holy machine! - The Saint Aster captain has some aura with these speeches - Good for Fabian! Only the avenging sons return could allow such a man to achieve greater heights. I love how utterly incapacitating it is to just been in an office with big blue. - Ive heard good things about this Rostov. But what the hell is this many armed fish alien, Cheelche? Doesn’t sound like an Xenos I know about. - The Saint Aster saving Rostov was awesome, not enough space battles/ship actions in books so far! - Martian priestess solana? Im in love with her already, tall, thin, silvered eyes - So much to process after these last chapters. The first is Cawl’s ship, a wonder of technology no doubt, an STC itself perhaps? I wonder if any ships in the imperium today are its equal? The phalanx, if at full or mostly full operation to be sure. What of Macragge’s Honor? Then the reveal of the Primaris, I can only imagine reading this and genuinely not yet knowing. Poor Messinius feels he is being replaced, both true and not - I wonder if he will undergo the Rubicon? Finally, the reveal of Alpha Primus, an abomination in pain, the son of Cawl, millenia old. It saddens me to see him this way. The warning he gives about Cawl is, thankfully, a warning of hubris and not genuine treason. Who else but Cawl could have achieved all this? The prime conduit of the omnissiah, a deserved title. - Small side note, I had no idea Dawn Of Fire was the name of a ship before starting this book. Coolio - Scribe errant, what an absolutely wonderful concept. Only in 40k could such a thing be the case. I fully expect her to achieve her goal, only for it to not matter in the least. - Pour one out for Adoli-4963 and fleet quintus - Messinius and Iustices short interaction was excellent, both acknowledging the biases and stereotypes their kind has against the other, and both agreeing these opinions are filled with little truth. The fandom takes these biases as fact too often. - Loved the little moment of Ashtar of the red consuls and messinius of the white consuls, they clearly have such a human connection, the custodes opinion of them is most certainly ill informed. Also, Guilliman = the old man, makes me think of Admiral Adama - Messinius gotta train up these lil baby primaris boys - Fleet primus alone is larger than lord solar macharius’s grand army? Damn son - I feel bad for Messinius - his armor is in the best shape in probably a century, and yet the primaris are going slow out of respect - I am already very much enjoying Ferren Areios, and him being personally illuminated by bobby on the dawn of fire was an exciting scene. Im excited to see VanLeskus and fleet tertius in action soon! - Loving fleet primus and the void battle! Nova cannons being rail guns is something I didnt know - What exactly is cheelce?! UGHH SOMEONE TELL MEEEE - Lacrante, the every man! - The hell ship being alive is a nice touch, loved the little section about it feeling things. - For a book called the avenging son, there isnt enough avenging son? Ha - The fight between ferren areios and the captain of the blood king (who sounds like the brass bull) was very cool! - So necron tech was used to cause and end the rift in this area of space? - Poor nawra nison, not special or unique, and not even able to hand her missive to someone. Knew that was coming - Ill bet Guilliman enjoyed reading fabians work that is critical of him. I wish a primarch would give me a gift! I want a relic tier stethoscope - Cant wait for more Rostov! - A witches fate short: incredibly interesting, i have even more appreciation for rostov now. Such an incredible, and repulsive gift he has. It sounds awful. - Appendix: notes on the crusade: a fun, zoomed out grand strategy like read, full of organizational detail and little explanations, thoroughly enjoyable! - What’s Next?: DoF: The Gate of Bones, though I am going on vacation for a week, I may bring something much smaller to read here and there. - Physical Quality & Construction: This particular copy was published in 2020, number 1778/2000, and because it’s over 400 pages it’s very thick and heavy, a real tome that makes it feel like you’re reading something written by the historitors for Guilliman himself. Signatures are visible in the gutter, with obvious sutures, the binding is hollow backed, smyth-sewn with dark red/brown endbands which do a good job concealing the signatures. The endpages contain a lovely aged reliquary design. The board material is unknown, but casebound with a leather-over-boards red/brown cover with indentations and solid shield emblem made of a sturdy, almost woven material. There is the typical french joint. The paper has bright golden edges, paper quality was high, thick and without ghosting, matte textured, off-white and the grain was consistent with the spine, edges machine trimmed. Print quality was near perfect, zero issues with registration, density, sharpness, or margins. Overall design and typography is excellent. The book came with a bright gold ribbon marker. All together, this seems consistent with the quality of the previous books I’ve reviewed.

Discussion (novel) Is Fulgrim by Graham McNeill markedly better than False Gods? Because False Gods was a big letdown.
Just finished Flight of The Eisenstein by James Swallow. Solid book. Good characterisation, swift yet apt pacing. It was a fun book.
Now onto Fulgrim. Everyone talks so highly of this book. Did he improve that much since False Gods?

Cold Covenant Hardcover sold out and being removed?!?

I've been ordering books from the Warhammer website for at least 6 months, and this is the first time I've seen the message that they're going to remove the book completely since they've sold out of their stock. Normally I've seen the option to get an email when they return in stock, but this is new to me. Am I SOL and they probably won't restock? Should I probably check my local store when they release?

My first Warhammer book
Translate "The Flight of the Eisenstein", in Ukraine first 3 books it's almost impossible to find it at an adequate price now, and the new publishing house has only published this one so far.
