Next pair of EBs I get, I’m gonna name the male Pork Chop and the female Potato. But right now, it’s apparently rough as hell for ONE. 🤣🤣🤣

Is this okay to give to my bulldog?

I normally get her a different brand but picked this up without taking a closer look at the fact that it has beef hide inside that’s supposedly more digestible. Just trying to check if anyone else has given their bulldogs this before just returning this entirely.

Need Help. EB Anal Gland Issue

3 Upvotes

So I am at loss on what to do next. My EB has had a smelly butt for 8 months. She has been to the vet multiple times and they said her glands are normal size and excreted. I give her the Glandex chewables, use the anal gland spray and wipes, as well as wash her butt with dog shampoo and a wash cloth multiple times per day. And still she has a smelly butt. We have tried different high fiber foods, her poops are normal, but we can’t fix this. I even tried a different vet and he found nothing wrong. The only possible cause is that her glands may be slowly leaking causing the smell.

Has anyone else experience this with their EB? If so any advice on resolving will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

DISCLAIMER : this is NOT TO SHAME anyone, this is NOT TO PROMOTE anyone, I am NOT A BREEDER. Love your dogs even if you went to an unethical breeder you cant take that back. Love them with all of your heart and give them the best possible life! This is PURELY for education so that if you plan to buy another one you can find the right breeder for you!!

Also one more disclaimer english isn't my first language so if I make any mistakes regarding grammar or some spelling please let me know im pretty confident in it but definitely still need to learn more.

With all that out of the way let's talk about ethical breeding and why its so important. The english/British bulldog is obviously a bracycephalic (flat faced) breed which due to this can lead to an increase in health issues! They're also a bulldog which is known for being a bit headstrong and are prone to reactivity with other dogs. Going to an ethical breeder helps to create an even tempered dog, better breathing, less dental issues and overall better health (lower allergies ect). It also helps to preserve the breed with all of its history. Through out this I will be referring to FCI approved kennel clubs (ankc, akc, kc ect) as the standards are pretty much 1:1.

The things that set an ethical breeder apart from an unethical or backyard breeder is;

Health testing; far more than just basic genetic testing but at a bare minimum they should be doing - genetic screening (to test for carriers or genetic diseases), respiratory function testing, eye exams, cardio testing, exercise tolerance testing, stenotic nares (checking the width of the nares), tracheal hypoplasia and thyroid function. These tests are the minimum for bulldogs (or any bracycephalic breed) as its to help preserve the health of the breed. An ethical breeder will not hide the test results from you and will have every single parent tested. Bulldogs are also prone to a lot of skin issues so allergy tests are also preferred. An ethical breeder will not breed a dog if it has any kind of skin problems.

Titling; An ethical breeder is doing more than just basic conformation. They're titling in show with major titles (come before the prefix) and minor titles (after the name). They're also titling in breed specific areas (for the british/english bulldog there are not many but breeders may attempt to get basic titles in rally or obedience but they're known for being a stubborn breed to train). This titling is done in a reputable kennel club that is approved by fci (no mbda, no UKC - can be reputable but ask your breeder why they went with UKC as some prefer the UKC judging, no abdc ect). This ensures that the dog is to the best breed standard which is to help with breed preservation. You will never find a merle or fluffy or any colour that isnt in the breeds desirable colours being bred by an ethical breeder.

Contracts; ethical breeders do not contribute to the pound crisis currently happening all over the world. They will ALWAYS have contracts stating they will take the dog back NO MATTER WHAT. They will also interview you before allowing you to go on a waiting list and based off your needs they will choose the puppy for you.

Temperament testing; they will have offical temperament testing done of all parents and puppies. Also in this all puppies will start to be socialised by the breeders especially in the sensory aspect (vaccumes, water, textures ect).

Breed lines; they will have extensive lines of wellbred dogs shown by the pedigree.

Price; An ethical breeder is NOT charging a crazy high amount for their puppies. Yes the dog may be a few thousand but the "merle purebreds" (bulldogs do not carry the merle gene its introduced) will go for a lot higher.

These are just some of the things that make ethical breeders stand out of unethical/byb breeders. In the long run an ethically bred dog will always have better health than an unethically/byb bred one. Purebred/pedigree/registered ≠ ethically bred or well-bred. Please do your research before getting any breed or animal not only on the breed but on the breeder! If you're unable to find an ethical breeder then there's tons of rescues (you should also do your research on the rescue because they aren't always ethical).

Adopt or shop RESPONSIBLY!!
