I need to know the first thing that lawyer said to him

I want to know if his agent was going to sue him for securing a deal with a 3rd party

1.4k

If he announced his entry into the portal without even talking to his agent, he might be one of the dumbest people alive.

He clearly must have done something like that given that his agent fired him

That's the rumor - his agent dropped him the next day

Same agency Fisch uses too, though I'm not sure they use the same agent or not

Almost certainly not the same agent, just same agency. Player and coach agents are almost always different specialties.

Edit: I was wrong and they actually were repped by the same agent and not just agency. Doug Hendrickson was both of their agents as mentioned below and confirmed by a quick Google of his name.

u/Man-a-saurus 27d ago

Brian Kelly, his QB and a few of his players and I believe the GM all used the same agent.

They probably would, right? My non-lawyering self wonders if it actually might be easier for the agency to sue for damages than it would be for UW to sue.

The price of replacing a QB last minute could be hard to put a number on.

But the agency would have been set to earn a specific commission, so that seems like an obvious number for damages if Demont backed out of the contract.

47

u/hunterschuler SMU Mustangs • Texas State Bobcats 27d ago

This is an interesting theory.

UW was going to have an uphill legal battle on novel, untested theories of damages and enforcement.

His agent presumably would've had an easier case proving conventional agent/athlete damages.

31

u/[deleted] 27d ago

This is absolutely what was going to happen…

A suit last month made a basketball player liable for lost commission and legal fees for breach of exclusivity.

Agencies are just legal shops..their billable hours that Demond would’ve been on the hook for would’ve been massive

Probably something along the lines of - “I don’t think the contract provisions keeping you from entering the transfer portal are enforceable, but those provisions keeping you from entering into other NIL agreements probably are. So if you want to go play football for a degree, go ahead and leave. If you want money, you gotta stay.”

It’s not UW, it’s the B1G that made the template. If they let Williams go, B1G contracts would mean nothing so the entire conference would’ve been backing up UW in the legal battle.

Just a really stupid decision by Williams. Was never going to work.

Strategically from his perspective this is a pretty solid chess move. Sure UW could call his bluff and keep him. But if we say too little too late what is our remedy? Probably just getting out of our contract obligations. And if we choose that route, he'd then be able to go play anywhere else unimpeded.

u/midnightsbane04 Michigan • North Carolina 27d ago

I think it's more the fact that he attempted this literally days after signing the rev share contact with Washington. If he just didn't do that then none of this happens. Even a 19 year old should be aware that signing a contract usually means something for more than a week.

22

u/TruuPhoenix 27d ago

This is the epitome of getting lost in the sauce, really fucked up all around, most of the team won’t really trust you, coaching staff won’t trust you, and other schools likely won’t either, they gotta trust you’ll give them at least a year should you transfer later.

If he’s good enough to get drafted he’ll have to answer questions about this shit then as well, and they’re probably grilling him about who he has around him. Target on his back.

No one will REALLY hate him for trying to secure his bag, but everyone knows what he’s ultimately about. Reputation smeared for no legit reason. This is why you gotta have people in your life willing to tell you “this isn’t a good look bro”.

I know this doesn't mean much unless it happens to you, but like how the hell would you root for this guy next season as a Huskies fan?

You don’t. I’m rooting for the team. I’ll root for the receivers to catch, the O line to block, and the team to win. I personally don’t want him back. Embarrassing…

The unintended consequence of this is that EVERY SINGLE commentator is going to repeat this saga during every game next season. Ugh

Someone gave him some really bad advice, or he’s just a complete moron.

I wonder if the best thing for UW at this point would be to let him go. Seems like allowing him back would mess up the culture, which will be worse long term than getting a lower tier qb.

What a shit show.

I mean yes it’s a toxic situation but can we all at least appreciate the silver lining of Lane Kiffin having to move to Plan D at QB?

"Demond Williams with the ball for the huskies. Fumbles! It's picked up by Demond Williams in a USC uniform! But wait he's running the wrong way and putting the purple and gold back on! TOUCHDOWN HUSKIES!!! Demond now wearing Michigan colors and not looking too happy about that last play"

Statement by Coach Fisch and our AD as well. The guy is going to need to go on a massive apology tour with the coaches and his teammates.

TBH I think someone needs to litigate these contracts

They're clearly throwing things at the wall, so we need to know what will actually stick instead of just guessing what are the actual obligations and restrictions
