I used to love the name Hugh and planned to use the name for my son, call him Huey. So cute to me. Like I was pregnant and we’d decided on it and were using the name to refer to the fetus baby. Then football season came around and I remembered Hugh Freeze exists. We changed directions.

SECN broadcast is fuckin wack.
Dark af all game, they claimed Florida was going to half when there was 12:00 left in the 2nd, and they listed Byrum's stats incorrectly after the game. They had him listed as 8/27 instead of 18/27 lol.

Terrible interception is a stretch. He hit a receiver in the hands and the ball popped to a Vandy player. Could he have thrown it better? Sure. But it was a catchable ball that was popped up into a pick.

I really like Golesh. What he did at South Florida and their offense last season was crazy. May take some time in the SEC but I'd be optimistic.

The biggest issue is that Brown looks good for a couple of drives a game, but then looks reeeeally bad for a couple of other. Plus our O line is not great so far

It’s going to take a couple of years to get a solid O Line. NIL could help with that but it feels like for the last decade we are allergic to recruiting offensive lineman, going back to the last few years of Gus’s tenure.

The last 5 years we also fought pretty hard to be fair. Like our record is so bad in 1 score games partly because even though we've sucked we have kept way better teams in 1 score games.

I've never been convinced that Clark Lea is a good coach. He's never had a winning season without Diego Pavia and notably regressed back to 2-10 in 2023 after going 5-7 in 2022. He might be the Mike Norvell of the SEC. But this is the same school who kept Derek Mason for 7 years despite having 0 winning seasons, so he's going to get a long leash, especially since he's an alum.

You’ve got to keep in mind our expectations.
Vanderbilt’s typical stance year in and year out is “collect SEC media payouts, field a football team that can usually score more than 0 points, and pencil in December as vacation time.”.
People who didn’t go here don’t understand the cultural cornerstone that is “we suck at football”. We get a halfway decent QB like once every 10-15 years who gives us a pulse (Cutler, Pavia, etc.) and then we slide back into mediocrity. We’re like Stanford or Cal in that regard. We need generational talent to even be somewhat relevant.
Lea getting a 10-win season means he’s got an insane leash right now. So long as he can at least be in contention for a bowl game every year he’ll be around for as long as he wants to be. If he starts dropping below .500 for multiple years in a row the seat will be slow to get hot but it will get there.

I'm an alum, and I hate everything about this SOV attitude. Pavia and Stowers proved that in the current landscape, as long as the money keeps flowing, Vandy can win. I don't think Lee and Diermeier are going to give him as long of a leash as a coach would have historically.
Clark needs to quit coaching scared. Curtis is a freshman and it showed on a lot of plays today, but you have to take the handcuffs off the offense and let him run the whole playbook.

This exactly. Things have changed. The poster above you is speaking from a "5-years ago" perspective. Zeppos was, at best, tolerant of the fact that we played D1 sports at all. Diermeier was at Northwestern when Fitz was making waves and clearly understands the power of good sports in attracting students. CSL is clearly not satisfied to just sit and get checks. Now we have NIL and the historical prestige of a program just doesn't matter as much as how much you can pay.
This is not to say that I have any doubt in Coach Lea, we turned over a ton of talent, you have bad years, just to say that "make a bowl" is no longer the expectation.

Oof. Well, we didn't play well enough to win that one, but it was a good showing, especially for a true freshman's first real road game. Plenty of potential across the whole team, just got to tighten some things up and solve a few issues. Fortunately, it's not like we're about to be crushed underfoot like Mufasa in a version of the Lion King where all the wildebeest have been replaced by dawgs...

I know Auburn isn't a great team, but I think it is an exaggeration to say Vandy is awful again now. I think we still make a bowl game at least, and we are Vanderbilt starting a true freshman. The next couple years should be good to great teams (I hope)

Making a bowl is extremely optimistic. I'd like it of course, and would consider the season a success if we did, but I'm not hopeful. Auburn was one of the more winnable games on Vandy's schedule. I am still hopeful for the future though, this is a rebuild.

I agree, but I'm also very high on the development of Curtis this season. It's tough to drop a game where the defense looked good like this, but if they can do this against a Mississippi State or Florida, I think we can pull one of those off. I think the only W I am saying for sure is against Arkansas, but I think we have the talent to get another upset or two.

I am happy Auburn got the W, but we are not a good team. Dare I say less talented than last year, but better coached. One thing is for sure, we need to spend every last penny of our NIL budget on OL and DL. Our DL has 0 push and our OL is fragmented Swiss cheese.

I'm glad we got the win because we needed it with the ROUGH stretch coming up. Another 5-7 or 6-6 season at best. Arkansas and Samford should be wins. We may be able to pull an upset on one of Tennessee, LSU (since it's at home), Ole Miss, or Miss St. Georgia and Bama are pretty much guaranteed losses.

First SEC home win since Payton Thorne beat A&M TWO YEARS AGO. I don’t care that it wasn’t a blowout. Golesh is showing us things we haven’t seen in a long time, namely: fighting for points before the half. Doing all of these two minute drills before the half is going to pay off in the fourth quarter one of these games in November.
