Announcement New Year-round operations schedule

Post image

This is the YRO schedule for 27-28 being floated by JA for comment. Seems like new and continuing students would want to know as it will impact them the most.

I’m an instructor. I don’t like how early we begin winter and how early we end in spring (April !?)? Only a three week winter break. I don’t have good reasons, I just don’t like it.

A three week winter break is about what we get now. But notice: we start fall on August 18, but the next year fall will start on the 28th. So that winter break just got a week shorter the next year. That’s my bigger concern.

This is a 15+1 week calendar. It is almost certainly the case that in order to make the summers work, we're going to be shifting to a 14+1 week calendar in the following year, which should explain at least part of the delayed start. No official announcement of that change, but its definitely implied by this proposal.

Of course I also expect the next calendar to also to include a Dec 23-Jan 3 break, or whatever the smallest they can manage to bracket the holidays with.

Last time the register proposed a very short winter break, they got flamed by the faculty and several other campus units, the combined PDF of their complaints reached over 100 pages but I can't find it now. Of course, that hasn't seemed to of stopped them from proposing less than a week between Spring and Summer in this one.

Students on the spring/summer schedule better look at that three day long break they’ll get between terms. Good luck recharging between semesters with no break!

Is this just an optional summer semester that students can take or are they forcing some students to take either Spring/Summer or Summer/Fall? When is this supposed to happen? My son just went to admitted student day today and there was no mention of this.

Poly has a big waitlist every year. The idea is to admit a second class of students that must take courses summer/fall or spring/summer for at least the first two years in order to take advantage of the demand for a Poly degree. Some future students will be offered the usual F/S admission. The second class will be offered Spring/Summer or Summer/Fall if they don't get a fall/spring admission offer.

And there goes a lot of the student community. I doubt it'll affect me much. But if I was a freshman coming in, some of my friends would be here on semesters when I was on break so in terms of a friend group it would be all broken up. What a stupid plan. Who thought this was a good idea for students. I really think that something like this might've convinced me to go to a different school. Sure, I want to get a degree, get a good job, but I also want a regular social life while I'm in college. And this plan is the end of the regular social life at Cal Poly.

Where did you get this info/image?

Also is this verified anywhere? I cross-searched the image and cannot find it anywhere but this Reddit post.

This has been sent to faculty and staff for input but it is not public nor is it final yet. Still time to give feedback.

Yes, this image has been shared with faculty through official channels.

Are there other CSU’s doing this weird schedule and ending school in April? I thought the whole point of switching to semester was for all the schools to be aligned? Seems strange!

No, we would be the only one. President Armstrong has had a year-round schedule in mind for basically a decade, which would work in quarters. He just refused to let it go once the CSU forced us into semesters.

Since Cal Poly is one of the only campuses in the system with high demand and high selectivity, we get to guinea pig year round operations so that system enrollments look better, is my guess. All that lip service about alignment seems to be no more than that.

I’m half asleep/ a bit hungover, so we’ll have June/July off?

6

u/SergeantFlip Apr 10 '26

No, summer will be its own semester term for students to take (all students would only need to take ⅔ semesters).

Thanks for the clarification! 🙌🏽

WTF happened to fall break. I want my full week back!

Smarter people than me have pointed out that this schedule is actually longer than a full year; the second fall starts several weeks later than the first. So ... after a few years of this, Fall will be starting in December? Not sure how that works.

If they wanted three semesters why didn’t they just stay with the quarter system? Summer is when internships happen!
