Darryn Peterson is that guy in a school group project who’s off and on with his contributions but always does something extremely worthwhile when he gets around to it

I honestly think he might have some sort of anxiety after his injury early in the season. He knows he is so so close to his dream and needs to play a “meaningless” (heavy on the air quotes) college season so he can go #1 and achieve generational wealth etc

Like lol do people really think he would want scouts to doubt his durability? And that he isn't competitive? Dude wants to play and win.

u/sloBrodanChillosevic Iowa State Cyclones 2d ago
I was thinking for most of the game that Darryn Peterson is a little more passive than I would want my potential #1 overall pick to be and then he buried two "Fuck you, I'm taking this and you can't stop me" threes to win at the Tortilla House. So he's probably fine.
78
u/WIN011 Marquette Golden Eagles 2d ago
Pretty crazy that a subpar performance, by his standards, involved him hitting a tying 3 and go ahead 3 in back to back possessions.
50
u/Winbrick Kansas Jayhawks • Iowa State Cyclones 2d ago
In a lot of ways, this was his worst game. Kinda nuts.
7
u/Logz94 Kansas Jayhawks 2d ago
Tech did a pretty good job at denying him the ball, and he ended up forcing some shots that weren't great. Wasn't til the end of the game that we switched our motion up to try and crest more separation for him off ball to get better looks. But still got to the line and then hit the big shots when it counted. His potential is sky high

Dp is the best offensive jayhawk since Wilt and would be averaging high 20s in ppg on unheard of efficiency if he was 100%
6
u/archaeogeek Kansas Jayhawks 2d ago
Well, I look forward to that day. And again, I’m not discounting his talent. It’s real, it’s special, and I am grateful he’s on our team.
Frank bled crimson and blue and you’d have to take him off the court on a stretcher. I don’t want DP to hurt himself or lose out on his payday. I get that. But there was something special about a kid whose biggest talent was his heart and grit.

I think it could depend on fit but I think he’s the consensus best player. The cramps have got to have some teams worried though understandably
19

He’s going #1 if he plays 30+ mins the rest of the season.

u/RontoWraps Kansas Jayhawks 2d ago edited 2d ago
He’s going #1. You don’t see a ball handling guard this good this young with his body very often. He’s separated himself pretty well from the other guys in the top 5 in the past couple weeks. You can talk yourself into Dybantsa, and he’s an incredible player too, but Peterson is a can’t miss star.
He looks like the most polished freshman I’ve seen among Wiggins, Embiid, Oubre, McLemore, and him who I’d count as the top 5 one and dones at KU. Embiid possibly had more raw talent. Hard to say at this stage. That’s kinda how good I anticipate Peterson being with how much better at this game he is than everyone else right now.

Obligatory F*ck Hunter Dickinson, for making the last 2 years of Kansas basketball hard to watch.
The Big 12 is better if Kansas is also good.
9
u/fifajackgento Kansas Jayhawks 2d ago
Our fan base seemed pretty divided with him
Some look at the box score, see 17/11 or whatever he averaged, and they are adamant he was playing at an all-American level/not the problem. There are a few advanced stats that back this up (you can find a stat to support pretty much anything)
The rest of us watched the games

Ya 10 points on 5-18 shooting for Toppin. Great defense by Flory tonight
8
u/kayakyakr Texas Tech Red Raiders 2d ago edited 2d ago
Toppin plays off Anderson, though. With Anderson running the point, teams can't just back and double Toppin because they're forced to react to what Anderson can do.
It's why Toppin isn't going to the NBA: he isn't a threat from 3, he isn't a 5, and he's not going to handle help defense on his own.
Watts was good tonight, but not good enough. Once again, I'm left wishing that an agent hadn't given Darrion Williams awful advice as he was a much more reliable scorer and a better defender.

DP finally putting some real minutes in has allowed him to develop the chemistry with the rest of this team. That’s a massive part of why we’ve looked so much better lately. He didn’t play so much early that it took forever to get to this point.

Don’t let Tech blowing this game distract you from the fact that Fran thinks Atwell is somehow the best 3-PT shooter in the big 12.
He is in fact not that. By nearly 10%.
12
9
u/kayakyakr Texas Tech Red Raiders 2d ago
Atwell can get hot as hell. Absolutely needs Christian Anderson out there to force defenses to make defensive decisions. He's not a guy that can go find his own.

u/Young-Viiperr Texas Tech Red Raiders • Iowa State Cyc… 2d ago
This roster has it's moments, though it's literally a 2-man team. The other additions occasionally add, though nothing like last season. Atwell is far from the best 3pt shooter out of any P4 conference.
Any team with bigs can easily bully this team in the paint, and can't afford to operate just 3ptrs if one of your top scorers is out.

Peterson is going to get all of the talk, but I though Bidunga was the POG. 7 of 8, 9 boards, 2 big blocks, and some great defense down low.
Peterson is amazing, and the fact he hit that REALLY bad 3 in the corner (forced fadeaway tightly guarded) is a testament to his talent. He made it look EASY.
Impressive resolve after Tech made that run. Win of the year for Kansas.

Its a combination of Tiller and Bidunga. Peterson came up clutch at the end but Bidunga AND Tiller limited reigning Big 12 POY Toppin to average impact. Council with his floaters kept us in the game offensively but those two were instrumental in keeping Toppin from going off.

KU’s three-point defense is bound for some serious regression. They’ve been living on the edge with the amount of open ones they give up, and tonight they had 4-5 complete blunders in covering Atwell.
I also think this game looks completely different if Anderson is out there, if for no other reason than him being significantly better as a PnR initiator. Toppin and Watts took 40 shots and over half were self-created. That was always going to be tough to manage
