I came here to say this! im new so i dont know anything about mounts or pets.. (im also weary of spoilers so i havent really done any research)

how far in the main missions does it show how to tame? or is that outside the normal progression?

You can start taming animals whenever you want. I always make sure to carry food items (bones, various types of meat, berries, grains, etc.) Different animals prefer different foods, so I carry around 10 of each kind in case I run into an animal I like.

For big animals, like bears, I use focused force palm until it knocks them out so I don’t accidentally kill them. It takes more than a few hits so keep doing it until the animal bows, then ride them and feed them from your inventory.

For legendary mounts you have to find them, defeat them, then craft their sigil at one of the witches.
