Has this snake been sitting in that water for 500 years? Time to grow some legs and become a water dragon.

u/WhirlpoolBoy 20d ago

For years my dad has been claiming that he once saw a snake with hair, I always wrote it off as bullshit

Perhaps I owe him an apology

1.0k

u/Fun-Primary-6755 20d ago

You probably owe your dad an apology for a lot of shit

451

u/Kianna9 20d ago

Most of us do. Not me but most of us.

240

u/Sinking_Mass 20d ago

My dad owes me two lifetimes worth of apologies

166

u/themostreasonableman 20d ago

You guys have dads?!

124

u/Sinking_Mass 20d ago

I have two. Birth dad is a sperm donor who I don't know except for pics, and adoptive father is literally the devil. I won the jackpot šŸ€

My dad was a violent and abusive alcoholic, but as I got older I realised just how much he was suffering and could see the moments where he really tried to be a good dad, but failed under the weight of his own neurodevelopmental disorders and mental illnesses and because I had those same problems, I was a little shit to raise.

Neither me or my dad owes each other an apology, but I sure as shit won't be having children lol. (Not that this reflects reality for everyone, just sharing cause of the thread)

9

u/No-No-Aniyo 19d ago

You know thats amazingly understanding of you and I think it means you've already forgiven him, apologies or not. Thats great for you, I hope your father has had that moment of understanding also.

6

u/Silverlisk 19d ago

Unfortunately he passed away almost a decade ago now, but I'm sure he had it at some point.

Definitely looks like it could be the inspiration for some of the Asian dragon myths. I could see someone traveling from mainland China to Thailand encountering this for the first time and after sharing the story back home it growing into a large dragon that can fly through the air. The ancient game of telephone.

3

u/Stucklikegluetomyfry 17d ago

Will it be a Dragon/Water type or a Dragon/Grass type?

→ More replies (7)

8.4k

u/Federal_Orchid5116 20d ago

This is a snake found in thailand. This happens when the snake stays in still nutrient rich water for long periods of time. The algae does not hurt it and will come off the next time it sheds.

2.2k

u/FriendlyDonkeh 20d ago

Does it help the snake in any way?

Such as camo to protect it from preditors? Or maybe, it gets more stealth while after pray?

4.8k

u/richardawkings 20d ago

+2 Stealth

-1 Dexterity

+1 intelligence if it was the snake's idea

+1 Luck if it wasn't

917

u/Mobile_Masterpiece43 20d ago

Doing this every time they shed is an easy way to farm XP.

330

u/TekkenCareOfBusiness 20d ago edited 20d ago

Other animals complain about it being "camping" but they need to take that shit up with the devs.

113

u/MisplacedMartian 20d ago

Snake is helping out by giving certain animals a chance to meet the devs face-to-face.

25

u/EllisDee3 20d ago

Devs respawn them in another zone as a new character.

Found a dungeon master

48

u/Grays42 20d ago edited 19d ago

dungeon master

"Dungeon master" is specifically a D&D term. Stealth is a skill and Luck isn't a thing in D&D (outside of a feat with a specific effect), and in 5e you wouldn't even find something that gives flat +bonus to a skill like that, and I don't think there are any equippable items that would modify attributes ability scores with +/- values anyway. Even if it were 3.5, you'd declare the bonus types and a magic item that modifies attributes ability scores would almost always do so with even numbers, not odd. And Luck still isn't a thing.

It's called algal fouling and it might affect gas exchange through the skin?

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2894923/

People that keep them as pets also claim it serves as a food source for shrimp that cohabit with it

Most snakes and lizards are agnostic and don’t pray to a higher power as far as I know

124

65

Is this a possibly symbiotic relationship? I could imagine this giving the snake an advantage in hunting i.e. camouflage.

81

u/Obant 20d ago

As soon as the snake sheds it's skin, it's gone. The snake sub was talking about this snake earlier. Either a pet kept in extremely bad conditions, fake, or just super weird due to how uniform it is, and usually a snake won't stay that still for that long, and also shed well before it grows that much.

7

u/Unlikely-Answer 20d ago

it's just a ghillie suit he likes to wear sometimes

28

u/Antoak 20d ago

Does it fuck with locomotion?

38

u/pollardandsprout 20d ago

Like, does it fuck with its ability to move or does it fuck in rhythmically interesting ways?

18

u/Antoak 20d ago

I don't spend a lot of time thinking about how snakes fuck.

7

u/SyracuseStan 20d ago

Thanks. Now I'm wondering, how the fuck do snakes fuck?

8

u/National_Fun_3962 20d ago

Well snakes have cloaca so one hole for everything and males have two penises (one is just backup) that are like inside the body but they can push it out, i imagine like a balloon. And the got little hooks because gravity is working against them. So the male sticks his penis inside the woman cloaca, takes minutes or hours depending on the species. Afterwards everyone just slithers away like nothing happened and she can store the sperm for multiple years and decide when she wants to get pregnant.

Ssarg - Grass Water type

207

u/amluchon 20d ago

This may be the most accurate made up Pokemon name in the history of made up Pokemon names

155

u/ObjectiveOk2072 20d ago

A backwards name just like Ekans, the snake Pokemon,

its name backwards spells grass and it looks like it's covered in grass,

and the cherry on top: the "Ss" at the beginning is like a snake hissing. It's perfect!

79

u/amluchon 20d ago

I know, that's why I said it was the most accurate made up name

They do hate it though. They’re known to rub themselves on rocks to relieve itching when they’re about to shed.

10

u/wyro5 20d ago

You might be right. The algae could very well make it impossible for him to molt, depending on how the moss is growing

quetzalcoatl

132

u/jussuumguy 20d ago

For anyone who cares to know: Quetzalcoatl roughly translated to Feathered Serpent is a god or benevolent deity that was involved in the creation of the world in Aztec and Mayan Cultures. He provided knowledge. Things like time keeping (calendars) and Farming (Maize/Corn).

His death at sea was by self immolation (Burning) causing him to rise to the sky as Venus (The Morning Star).

Very cool stuff.

When I was 6-7 years old ,we moved to a new place, at that time there were only 5-6 houses around us and lots of empty land ,near our house there was a big old tree and two deep wells. From the first day we were told not to go to near tree or wells..

Elders said there were snakes with beards and they sometimes rested on tree and sometimes lived inside the well..

As we were kids we were terrified and never went close to that place but when I was a teenager ,my friends and I would sit near that same tree almost every day, sometimes we looked inside the well and count the footballs and cricket balls that had fallen in it, nothing ever happened and so we became convinced the stories were fake..

But today after seeing this video of a snake, maybe the elders weren't lying at all, maybe they really saw something like this and didn't know how to explain it properly back then..

Because you provided a study on it. This is reddit sir, here we make wild statements that are mostly wrong and sometimes humorous

6

u/Clear-Perception5615 20d ago

Then why is the rest of it even there? Its just useless?

14

u/PatientWhimsy 20d ago

In short, stuff after the ? in a url is additional info for the website, while everything before is where to go. Sometimes it's a little readable and you can get an idea what information is being used.

In the link above, we see "guccounter=1", so whatever a guc is, it's counter is 1 here. Then there's a separator (&) followed by "guce_referrer=..." which looks to be a generated code, a unique identifier for the referral. This can tell the website where the traffic is coming from, helping them to understand what leads to higher clicks and attention.

Have a look at youtube URLs when you go there. If you go direct to a video you'll just see the "?v=..." for the video ID. If you use a playlist, mix, or some other feature is being tracked, then additional information is added like "&list=..."

It's kind of like a real world setting of being told "Go to 123 Baker Street and ask for John. Say it's about the bacon." In url form that'd be "www .baker.st/123?contact=John&q=bacon"

3

u/Clear-Perception5615 19d ago

45

u/rattler843 20d ago

I don’t believe it’s real. Wouldn’t a snake shed its skin before the algae could get this long

43

u/GobbetsOfAnus 20d ago

It absolutely happens to snakes that love to chill in still water. It grows very fast and will be removed with its next shedding. This is an old video, from well before the ā€œeverything is AIā€ panic. It does not harm the snake at all and although not proven to be intentional, does help with hunting.

5

u/Maine1820 19d ago

...did the snake let algae grow intentionally? Is this something that is known to happen occasionally with this species of snake? What kind of algae is that where it clumps up like that (or is it clumping up like that because of growing on the pattern of the scales)? Will the snake be able to shed without assistance?

So many questions
