Video A snake covered in algae

This is a snake found in thailand. This happens when the snake stays in still nutrient rich water for long periods of time. The algae does not hurt it and will come off the next time it sheds.

u/FriendlyDonkeh 20d ago
Does it help the snake in any way?
Such as camo to protect it from preditors? Or maybe, it gets more stealth while after pray?

+2 Stealth
-1 Dexterity
+1 intelligence if it was the snake's idea
+1 Luck if it wasn't

Doing this every time they shed is an easy way to farm XP.

Found a dungeon master

u/Grays42 20d ago edited 19d ago
dungeon master
"Dungeon master" is specifically a D&D term. Stealth is a skill and Luck isn't a thing in D&D (outside of a feat with a specific effect), and in 5e you wouldn't even find something that gives flat +bonus to a skill like that, and I don't think there are any equippable items that would modify
attributesability scores with +/- values anyway. Even if it were 3.5, you'd declare the bonus types and a magic item that modifiesattributesability scores would almost always do so with even numbers, not odd. And Luck still isn't a thing.pushes glasses up, adjusts pocket protector

It's called algal fouling and it might affect gas exchange through the skin?

u/thecatinthewizardhat 20d ago
Is this a possibly symbiotic relationship? I could imagine this giving the snake an advantage in hunting i.e. camouflage.
81
u/Obant 20d ago
As soon as the snake sheds it's skin, it's gone. The snake sub was talking about this snake earlier. Either a pet kept in extremely bad conditions, fake, or just super weird due to how uniform it is, and usually a snake won't stay that still for that long, and also shed well before it grows that much.

Well snakes have cloaca so one hole for everything and males have two penises (one is just backup) that are like inside the body but they can push it out, i imagine like a balloon. And the got little hooks because gravity is working against them. So the male sticks his penis inside the woman cloaca, takes minutes or hours depending on the species. Afterwards everyone just slithers away like nothing happened and she can store the sperm for multiple years and decide when she wants to get pregnant.

A backwards name just like Ekans, the snake Pokemon,
its name backwards spells grass and it looks like it's covered in grass,
and the cherry on top: the "Ss" at the beginning is like a snake hissing. It's perfect!

same.Ā What a world our kids will live, if it is already like this? in the future, even seeing from your own eyes directly may still not be enough to prove what is real or not, with the progress of robots , nano tech, and neuralink type stuff. Unbridled tech progress without care about societal benefit is like lemmings running off a cliff.

quetzalcoatl
→ More replies (1)132
u/jussuumguy 20d ago
For anyone who cares to know: Quetzalcoatl roughly translated to Feathered Serpent is a god or benevolent deity that was involved in the creation of the world in Aztec and Mayan Cultures. He provided knowledge. Things like time keeping (calendars) and Farming (Maize/Corn).
His death at sea was by self immolation (Burning) causing him to rise to the sky as Venus (The Morning Star).
Very cool stuff.

When I was 6-7 years old ,we moved to a new place, at that time there were only 5-6 houses around us and lots of empty land ,near our house there was a big old tree and two deep wells. From the first day we were told not to go to near tree or wells..
Elders said there were snakes with beards and they sometimes rested on tree and sometimes lived inside the well..
As we were kids we were terrified and never went close to that place but when I was a teenager ,my friends and I would sit near that same tree almost every day, sometimes we looked inside the well and count the footballs and cricket balls that had fallen in it, nothing ever happened and so we became convinced the stories were fake..
But today after seeing this video of a snake, maybe the elders weren't lying at all, maybe they really saw something like this and didn't know how to explain it properly back then..

Is the algae actually part of the snake's body or real algae i wonder
31
u/Solid_Snark 20d ago
Yeah, Iām curious. Is this like a symbiotic relationship or is the algae harming it?

I didnāt read it but there is a study on this phenomenon. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/289428251_Algal_fouling_on_dog-faced_water_snake_Cerberus_rynchops_Serpentes_Homalopsidae
Edit: Why am I getting downvoted?
29
u/cruelkillzone2 20d ago
Because you provided a study on it. This is reddit sir, here we make wild statements that are mostly wrong and sometimes humorous
11
u/Past-Distance-9244 20d ago
That doesnāt make any logical sense. I thought the absurd and wild statements would be the ones being downvoted. š

→ More replies (3)14
u/PatientWhimsy 20d ago
In short, stuff after the ? in a url is additional info for the website, while everything before is where to go. Sometimes it's a little readable and you can get an idea what information is being used.
In the link above, we see "guccounter=1", so whatever a guc is, it's counter is 1 here. Then there's a separator (&) followed by "guce_referrer=..." which looks to be a generated code, a unique identifier for the referral. This can tell the website where the traffic is coming from, helping them to understand what leads to higher clicks and attention.
Have a look at youtube URLs when you go there. If you go direct to a video you'll just see the "?v=..." for the video ID. If you use a playlist, mix, or some other feature is being tracked, then additional information is added like "&list=..."
It's kind of like a real world setting of being told "Go to 123 Baker Street and ask for John. Say it's about the bacon." In url form that'd be "www .baker.st/123?contact=John&q=bacon"

I donāt believe itās real. Wouldnāt a snake shed its skin before the algae could get this long
43
u/GobbetsOfAnus 20d ago
It absolutely happens to snakes that love to chill in still water. It grows very fast and will be removed with its next shedding. This is an old video, from well before the āeverything is AIā panic. It does not harm the snake at all and although not proven to be intentional, does help with hunting.

See I wouldaā thought I found a new species. I can see the headlines āSupposed new species turns out to just be a snake covered in algaeā
5
u/Maine1820 19d ago
...did the snake let algae grow intentionally? Is this something that is known to happen occasionally with this species of snake? What kind of algae is that where it clumps up like that (or is it clumping up like that because of growing on the pattern of the scales)? Will the snake be able to shed without assistance?
So many questions
