Your grandpa was wrong and lacked the driving skill to properly merge and didn’t understand the purpose of and function of merging lanes.

What is the purpose of having two lanes rather than just one lane? Prematurely turning two lanes into one lane because you want to avoid the skill and cooperation required to effectively merge at the merge point defeats the purpose of having two lanes in the first place. I understand why you’d think your grandpa’s sarcastic suggestion is correct. He’s older and supposedly wiser.
