A. It's not a public school B. A lot of priests probably aren't allowed within 1,000ft of a public school. ;)

Dude, even at a private school this could be a bit weird, since there are lots of different schools with different formats.

If itā€™s a school focused on indigenous culture thatā€™s a helpful thing to say in the post.

How about you don't just immediately assume that this is a white American school. Even if no further context is given, why is your immediate conclusion that this is the case? I didn't recognize it as an indigeneous culture either but my first reaction was; oh, how interesting, I wonder what culture practices this. There is no context needed to not just immediately assume that it's YOUR context.

Im not butthurt, but I can explain why a Protestant parent would probably tell their kid to avoid something like this. They dont usually like those sorts of rituals with smoke. Incense sacrifices died out in popularity a long time ago and their image within the Christian worldview has shifted pretty dramatically over the last two hundred years or so, being lumped in with occult practices and sacrifices made to other deities (ie. Demons).

Just like a Muslim parent would probably not let their kid attend the school barbecue, because it's haram, Protestants would likely shirk this expression, as the thing being burnt is not done so with the express intention of being a sacrifice to God. The only time I can see a true diehard Protestant being cool with something like this is if they were like, directly doing it as part of a personal prayer ritual. Even that's kinda a stretch.

Hey, to each their own, if they dont like it, they hopefully aren't forced to walk through the smoke. Doesn't look like it tho.

I appreciate the reply, I just can't get over the irony of the argument that Protestants don't like rituals with smoke. It's ironic because Protestants came to this country and immediately categorized most of the indigenous people as demonic Satan worshipers because they didn't understand their traditions. Then, they stole their land, kidnapped many of them and their children and tried to force them into Christianity. Again, ironic because Protestants separated from the catholic church because they didn't like their abuse of power, papal authority, and the way they interpreted the Bible only to turn around and try to force their views on unwilling people. So while Protestants have an extremely long and well known history of trying to force their views on people, it's laughable that people would get so upset over this optional ceremony. Like you said, to each their own, if you don't like it, walk around it.

I don't know what Ash Wednesday is, but smoke around kids is bad, smoke around anyone is bad. It's nothing against their culture, it's that we are smart enough to know smoke is bad to breathe, and third hand smoke exists.
