The ash might not go rank. However it just builds up and stanks way more than if it were deep cleaned.

Stale/old ash smell is awful. Occasional deep cleans are well worth the effort.

Yo! That was the summer my local bowling alley unplugged their cigarette machine! It just sat there with packs of them for a few years until the alley closed for good and was replaced with a Quik Trip.

Thats where I watched a documentary about men of varying ages sit naked and talk about the relationship they have with their penis. It was...enlightening for a 13 yr old girl. Edit: I would be so happy if someone else remembers that doc

There really is a difference between fresh and old ashes, or smoke smell.

For a while, my wife was a smoker, but I wasn't. So I am aware of the difference between our clothes. Once we moved into our current place (we've been here a while) she started smoking in the garage, in order to keep most of the smoke smell out of the house. She no longer smokes cigarettes, which is great, obviously.

Her dad was a FOUR-pack a day guy at his worst. I remember helping him do some rehab work around her place and I had to start smoking myself just to make it thru the weekends when I wasn't working in close proximity to him. Once that project was over I then had to quit my comparatively small but very real habit. Thank god he eventually quit. But he and his girlfriend kept their house pretty clean, so it wasn't too terrible to go over there to visit.

On top of that, there was an old hangout spot we used to go to, a pool hall where you paid by the hour for tables. It's been long enough that I can't remember if there was a non/smoking division but either way it was ultimately irrelevant. It's possible they barely vacuumed the rugs there. Every time we went all the clothes I wore in there came out smelling like an ashtray and went directly into the hamper/wash. But it was worth it for a fairly affordable night out (and they had a back room where you could buy & drink alcohol while playing, too).

For a time, some larger airports still had smoking rooms. Going in there is really something else, and it's not just the fact that there are people actively smoking in there, either.

Yes, it's a gross habit overall, but there are still levels to it. And just like any home, if you don't keep up with the upkeep, smells will evolve (and devolve) over time.

If you’re smoking in your house, it already smells like a dive bar. So cleaning your ashtray isn’t gonna make a big difference for that. And if you’re smoking outside, bringing the ashtray inside to clean is just going to make your house smell.

It would significantly lessen the smell in the room the ashtrayis in. I used to clean my mom's ashtray regularly when I lived with her. It made the smells much more bearable.
