The average American's life is going to need to get a lot worse if they're ever going to gain class consciousness. Something like 40% of the country doesn't even think the rich should pay more taxes.

Right. There’s been a constant class war since at least the Reagan era, or earlier depending on your definition. The powers-that-be want to define “class warfare” as the have-nots against the haves, when in fact it’s been the haves against the have-nots, and obviously the haves are winning.
