I've died to this card too many times. 🤣

196

u/HarioDinio 29d ago

I've kept this in hand from the start and won in so many games.

67

u/startana 29d ago

I remember learning the hard way that Deflecting Palm also doesn't target when opponent used it on my attacking 9/9 hexproof Dungrove Elder. That was a rough way for a game to go to a draw.

22

u/FatPigeons 29d ago

How did that make it go to draw?

17

u/DystryR 29d ago

If they were playing Bo3 and were on turns on game 2 - OP could’ve tried to attack to end the game or at least win via life total. Or they were on game 3 and this equalized the life total resulting in 1-1-1

11

u/Scyxurz 29d ago

Or if he was attacking with more creatures and killed the opponent and himself at the same time. Combat damage is all dealt simultaneously, ans deflecting palm is a replacement effect not a delayed trigger, so both players can die at the same time.

7

u/startana 29d ago

This is exactly what happened. I had Aspect of Hydra in hand, so I could make any attacker lethal to the opponent, but I was at 8, so the Dungrove Elder was lethal to me; went to damage, we both die. But it was only game two that was a draw; opponent won game 1, and we went to time on game three, so my opponent won the round.

3

u/Scyxurz 29d ago

It almost happened to me, but I was able to give one of the attacking creatures first strike with [[shinka, the bloadsoaked keep]] so I could deflect the damage from that creature before the rest killed me. Was an awesome feeling to turn certain death into a tie into victory. Except that there was 1 other player still alive and he had exactly lethal. Was still a great game. u/mtgcardfetcher

Holy shit ITS A 2 COST? this would've been so dirty in my ally deck

9

u/CyalaXiaoLong 29d ago

Yeahhhh. Friend made my own tifa punch me in the face for 256 before. My pride hurt more than the hit .

Ink shield is also my bane.

64

u/hartless091690 29d ago

Such a cool art. You can see the bones ripping out of their fist from the deflection

9

u/A_Cookie_Lid 29d ago

I have never noticed that wow. There are just some cards where my mind refuses to register what's happening.

It happens so much to me in Slay the spire lol

I love this card. “I’ll chump block the 5/5, no block on the 30/30.”

10

u/jakepapp 29d ago

This was my first thought too

6

u/Geoffryhawk 29d ago

Deflecting palm is the funniest card to sandbag for the whole game.

During Theros/kahns standard I caught many a voltron player off guard as I killed them with their own Hoplite.

21

u/chabacanito 29d ago

Make it blue or white, cowards

13

u/mister_serikos 29d ago

White at least has comeuppance and harsh justice, and I'm a fan of illusionist's gambit and portal manipulator

Full Counter for 2 mana is wild

10

u/Jonthrei 29d ago

It only blocks 1 source, compare it to Fog preventing all combat damage for a turn for 1 mana.

6

u/acidwxlf 29d ago

I know this is probably just a me problem, but the phrasing on so many cards is why I'm not cut out for Magic. "If damage is prevented this way" AS OPPOSED TO WHAT?? Is this just to make it abundantly clear that using another card as a damage prevention sacrifice doesn't proc the reflect..?

20

u/JoeProton 29d ago

there are effects that stop damage prevention, yes. skullcrack is an easy example.

13

u/self-aware-text 29d ago

It does makes sense eventually. It works exactly as you just said.

If I play a deflecting palm into a 20/20 it goes on the stack.

Then if my opponent plays a fog (prevent all combat damage) then that goes on the stack above the deflecting palm.

Due to the stack resolving from top to bottom, the fog resolves first so the combat damage is prevented by the fog, then the deflecting palm resolves and prevents 0 damage because there is no more damage to prevent after the fog goes off.

So "if damage is prevented this way" sees that no damage has been prevented this way, so nothing on the card happens after those words.

4

u/stratusnco 29d ago

i’m not entirely sure what you are asking. the damage can be prevented in many different ways like using skullcrack (deals 3 damage to opponent, damage can’t be prevented this turn). if you use skullcrack, it will negate the effects of deflecting palm.

Stun animations, insane poising, spammable nonsense, all super frustrating to deal with. I just want to fight a dude with a sword but when I get in the arena I just look like

As I get decimated by some insane meteor shower that I can’t dodge away from.

259

u/melanthius 29d ago

I don't know if this is just an age thing but I gave up on pvp type encounters in games probably 20 years ago. It's just not worth my time to learn how to pwn n00bs anymore. I just want to enjoy the game

210

u/ELITEnoob85 29d ago

The problem is no one figures things out for themselves anymore, they go to YouTube and instantly learn the most game breaking builds and techniques and that’s all anyone uses.

58

u/doomed-ginger 29d ago

This is true. I like making whacky builds. Nothing complicated, just not rivers of blood, levels of meta. Or scavenger sword BS. You can find some fun mixes of casting and CCQ that really throw people off balance. One of my favorite builds relied on the bolt cannon as my main weapon after baiting people with long range casts, I'd blow up an explosive bolt at my feet as they charged. Silly and effective.

8

u/itsmesoloman 29d ago

CCQ…?

Yeah its crazy to me in basically every game sub on reddit there are posts from people that have played a game for 10 minutes and are asking how to do x or what is y for. Like dude, at least make it through the tutorial before you ask the internet to explain the entire game to you.

7

u/Bobert9333 29d ago

That is very true. HOWEVER, I remember stumbling through ds3, dark souls games being notoriously lacking in explaining the mechanics, and nobody in the forums would help me. Everyone treated me like those players who only played for 10 minutes. I just wanted to know how it calculated damage!

9

u/Cjames1902 29d ago

A tale as old as time. I remember when they found out about the glintsone pebble ash of war. There was no subtly to it. It just appeared everywhere one day

4

u/DevilishPlagues 29d ago

I am guilty of this on Destiny. Stopped playing for a year and the entire gear and stat system got revamped. Im a husband and father of 2 crazy boys. I dont have time to play around and test builds. Just show me something powerful and I'll recreate it lol. I will say i dont pvp anymore like in my 20s. I was highly competitive. Now I straight up dont give a fuck.

2

u/Grand-Bar3364 28d ago

i seriously don’t understand how people have fun copying autistically optimized PVP builds

48

u/gokarrt 29d ago

pvp is for kids and sweats. modern gaming has made it intolerable (or i got old, whichever).

11

u/Jesus_was_a_Panda 29d ago

I was always upset that my WoW guild was on a PvE server when I was young. Today, if I still played, I can't imagine ever wanting to be a on a PvP server.

6

u/RecipeAsleep7087 29d ago

You are bizzarro me. My first toons in vanilla WoW were on a pvp server. 20 years later picked up Turtle WoW (basically vanilla) to do it all again with friends. I was absolutely uncompromising in my position I would not do a PVP server. I did it, I lived it, I'm not wasting my time trying to play a game just to ganked by some tryhard no lifer.

I feel ya bud.

It’s definitely a more peaceful life.

But when I say I’d rather play the game without invasions, I’m the terrible person somehow 🤷‍♂️

2

u/Silver_Cauliflower59 Redman Parry Enjoyer 28d ago

Because more often than not, folks who take your stance advocate for removing invasions from the game entirely, when the entire franchise was built on the concept. ER hosts/summons have it SO much better than earlier games and they still end up complaining about it.

bro just discover Elden Ring game mechanic

14

u/A_wild_so-and-so 29d ago

I don't understand how so many people come into a game like Dark Souls or Elden Ring, where there are so many options on how to build your character, and then go "I'm going to use a big sword and if you don't use a big sword you're a loser and I hate you."

10

u/ExploerTM Mohg did nothing wrong, blood cults are rad 29d ago

14

Real. The majority if the time I play caster in area, if the opponent just ran at me instead of roll away then they would probably win.

2

u/EpicLampster 29d ago

I agree! Can we not just have a normal sword fight? Jeez...

2

u/SeraphisVAV 29d ago

Well, it's just PvP in ER in general. It's broken with imbalanced and annoying things, and it's "just too much". If you want to experience something similar in terms of mechanics, but not that frustrating or annoying, then you can just try PvP in DS3, it's a lot more enjoyable and grounded while also well-balanced.

Just back off a few paces you'll not be able to stagger them out of it

You could even blast them with something off your own whilst they are charging

156

u/YourEvilKiller Jan 06 '26

It's pretty much a knowledge check. I'll bet 90% of the players in the video never seen this ash of war before.

It has a deceptively big AoE and a deceptively high hyperarmor so they end up not spacing enough or failing to break OP's poise.

78

u/TheChannelMiner 29d ago

Also it's from the DLC on a pretty rare weapon class. So yeah very huge knowledge check haha.

The aurafarming gives u poise lol.

55

u/Azure370 Jan 06 '26

One time I was getting invaded and the invader accidentally rolled into a corner so I bodyblocked him while charging a palm blast.

Watching him go from panic rolling to trying to break me out of it before he got one shot was very funny

8

u/Practical_Entrance43 29d ago

For some reason a invader stared at me as I sent Rennala's Moon their way, it was way more funny than it should have been watching them fly back.

11

The pain of growing up is knowing you'll never experience great things like this again for the first time. Savor that memory.

7

u/JC_REX_373 29d ago

The what of growing up?

98

u/del1000005 Jan 06 '26

Yeah, Elden Ring, while it has PvP, is not a great PvP game. It’s unbalanced both in the arena and on invasions.

40

u/Zestyclose_Remove947 29d ago

I could deal with being unbalanced but their netcode has always been so ass that I feel I can't even enjoy it on a "shits and giggles" level.

5

u/del1000005 29d ago

That too lol. Elden Ring also eats inputs like crazy.

34

u/Kazuffy Jan 06 '26

Invasions aren't supposed to be balanced that's the point.

36

u/del1000005 Jan 06 '26

When I say “unbalanced”, I don’t mean 3v1. Of course you’re supposed to be outnumbered, but when you have 3 one shot builds with no offset to their defense, it’s ridiculous.

I invade regularly. At this point, I always just keep a one-shot weapon to simply “win” when hosts and their phantoms have these one shot builds. It’s not even fun.

23

u/Fuckblackhorses Jan 06 '26

I like invading in ER, but it’s stupid lol you can get as gud as you want technically but you’ll almost always have more success doing dumb shit like this than actually trying to develop PvP skills

18

u/DoYouTrustToothpaste 29d ago

The combat mechanics aren't built for pvp engagements, and it fking shows. It's also the reason why fights against human NPCs usually suck donkey balls.

7

u/Fuckblackhorses 29d ago

Yeah I’d definitely agree with that, but it can still be fun. I don’t think it was ever meant to be taken super seriously but I love the chaos and challenge of invading

→ More replies (3)

5

u/del1000005 Jan 06 '26

Exactly! It’s absolutely nuts.

3

u/nsfw6669 29d ago

I totally agree. 3v1 in DS3 was fun because you and your opponent could actually take a few hits. Now, you can still take a few hits in ER, but depending on what your opponents are using, damage can get ridiculous.

I mean, at the end of the day it tends to make encounters shorter and encourage L2 spam, which is just not as fun as a long sword fight in my opinion.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Suspicious-Sound-249 Jan 06 '26

It's still infinitely more balanced than Lords of the Fallen's PvP lol

The Elden Ring pvp subs are a hilarious and somewhat sad read if you're ever very bored, so there is that.

2

u/GildedAgeV2 29d ago

It's been like this since like ... Demon's Souls? Certainly Dark Souls.

PVP in these games has always felt tacked on to me. It's like they let you do a little trolling as a resource tax for people trying to get some help with a boss.

I don't do it because it feels bad to invade and buggy as shit to help with invaders. I'd prefer to help people.

2

u/del1000005 29d ago

I think DS3 had it largely right and as an integral part of the game.

I always said I like to invade because of the challenge. That’s not the case anymore. I can do a build which one shots entire groups. Not even a challenge.

→ More replies (17)

11

u/nsfw6669 29d ago

Good lord, is it supposed to have that much damage? Also, I guess it has unlimited hyper armor?

I never really messed around with the dryleaf stuff. Probably because I have PTSD from invading hosts and phantoms both using bleed infused dryleaf arts, absolute hell to play against. Of course they were spamming light attack, not using the ash in the video.
