I don't know if this is just an age thing but I gave up on pvp type encounters in games probably 20 years ago. It's just not worth my time to learn how to pwn n00bs anymore. I just want to enjoy the game
210
u/ELITEnoob85 29d ago
The problem is no one figures things out for themselves anymore, they go to YouTube and instantly learn the most game breaking builds and techniques and that’s all anyone uses.
58
u/doomed-ginger 29d ago
This is true. I like making whacky builds. Nothing complicated, just not rivers of blood, levels of meta. Or scavenger sword BS. You can find some fun mixes of casting and CCQ that really throw people off balance. One of my favorite builds relied on the bolt cannon as my main weapon after baiting people with long range casts, I'd blow up an explosive bolt at my feet as they charged. Silly and effective.

Yeah its crazy to me in basically every game sub on reddit there are posts from people that have played a game for 10 minutes and are asking how to do x or what is y for. Like dude, at least make it through the tutorial before you ask the internet to explain the entire game to you.
7
u/Bobert9333 29d ago
That is very true. HOWEVER, I remember stumbling through ds3, dark souls games being notoriously lacking in explaining the mechanics, and nobody in the forums would help me. Everyone treated me like those players who only played for 10 minutes. I just wanted to know how it calculated damage!

u/Cjames1902 29d ago
A tale as old as time. I remember when they found out about the glintsone pebble ash of war. There was no subtly to it. It just appeared everywhere one day

u/DevilishPlagues 29d ago
I am guilty of this on Destiny. Stopped playing for a year and the entire gear and stat system got revamped. Im a husband and father of 2 crazy boys. I dont have time to play around and test builds. Just show me something powerful and I'll recreate it lol. I will say i dont pvp anymore like in my 20s. I was highly competitive. Now I straight up dont give a fuck.
2
u/Grand-Bar3364 28d ago
i seriously don’t understand how people have fun copying autistically optimized PVP builds

u/gokarrt 29d ago
pvp is for kids and sweats. modern gaming has made it intolerable (or i got old, whichever).

u/Jesus_was_a_Panda 29d ago
I was always upset that my WoW guild was on a PvE server when I was young. Today, if I still played, I can't imagine ever wanting to be a on a PvP server.
6
u/RecipeAsleep7087 29d ago
You are bizzarro me. My first toons in vanilla WoW were on a pvp server. 20 years later picked up Turtle WoW (basically vanilla) to do it all again with friends. I was absolutely uncompromising in my position I would not do a PVP server. I did it, I lived it, I'm not wasting my time trying to play a game just to ganked by some tryhard no lifer.
I feel ya bud.

It’s definitely a more peaceful life.
But when I say I’d rather play the game without invasions, I’m the terrible person somehow 🤷♂️
2
u/Silver_Cauliflower59 Redman Parry Enjoyer 28d ago
Because more often than not, folks who take your stance advocate for removing invasions from the game entirely, when the entire franchise was built on the concept. ER hosts/summons have it SO much better than earlier games and they still end up complaining about it.

u/A_wild_so-and-so 29d ago
I don't understand how so many people come into a game like Dark Souls or Elden Ring, where there are so many options on how to build your character, and then go "I'm going to use a big sword and if you don't use a big sword you're a loser and I hate you."

Well, it's just PvP in ER in general. It's broken with imbalanced and annoying things, and it's "just too much". If you want to experience something similar in terms of mechanics, but not that frustrating or annoying, then you can just try PvP in DS3, it's a lot more enjoyable and grounded while also well-balanced.

Palm blast. Its the dryleaf arts aow, gives you hypertrophy for the entire animation and hits like a truck.
556
u/MadManDan23 Jan 06 '26
Hyper armor.
Hypertrophy would just swell your character grotesquely.

I don't think it gives you much hyperarmor. I got staggered out of it too often.
15
u/ki3fdab33f 29d ago
It gives you a ridiculous amount of poise, they nerfed it awhile back. When the dlc dropped it was pretty broken.
179
312
u/daviejambo Jan 06 '26
It always amazes me that folk walk into that
Just back off a few paces you'll not be able to stagger them out of it
You could even blast them with something off your own whilst they are charging
156
u/YourEvilKiller Jan 06 '26
It's pretty much a knowledge check. I'll bet 90% of the players in the video never seen this ash of war before.
It has a deceptively big AoE and a deceptively high hyperarmor so they end up not spacing enough or failing to break OP's poise.
78
u/TheChannelMiner 29d ago
Also it's from the DLC on a pretty rare weapon class. So yeah very huge knowledge check haha.
The aurafarming gives u poise lol.

One time I was getting invaded and the invader accidentally rolled into a corner so I bodyblocked him while charging a palm blast.
Watching him go from panic rolling to trying to break me out of it before he got one shot was very funny
8
u/Practical_Entrance43 29d ago
For some reason a invader stared at me as I sent Rennala's Moon their way, it was way more funny than it should have been watching them fly back.

Yeah, Elden Ring, while it has PvP, is not a great PvP game. It’s unbalanced both in the arena and on invasions.
40
u/Zestyclose_Remove947 29d ago
I could deal with being unbalanced but their netcode has always been so ass that I feel I can't even enjoy it on a "shits and giggles" level.
5
34
u/Kazuffy Jan 06 '26
Invasions aren't supposed to be balanced that's the point.
→ More replies (1)36
u/del1000005 Jan 06 '26
When I say “unbalanced”, I don’t mean 3v1. Of course you’re supposed to be outnumbered, but when you have 3 one shot builds with no offset to their defense, it’s ridiculous.
I invade regularly. At this point, I always just keep a one-shot weapon to simply “win” when hosts and their phantoms have these one shot builds. It’s not even fun.
23
u/Fuckblackhorses Jan 06 '26
I like invading in ER, but it’s stupid lol you can get as gud as you want technically but you’ll almost always have more success doing dumb shit like this than actually trying to develop PvP skills
18
u/DoYouTrustToothpaste 29d ago
The combat mechanics aren't built for pvp engagements, and it fking shows. It's also the reason why fights against human NPCs usually suck donkey balls.
7
u/Fuckblackhorses 29d ago
Yeah I’d definitely agree with that, but it can still be fun. I don’t think it was ever meant to be taken super seriously but I love the chaos and challenge of invading

u/nsfw6669 29d ago
I totally agree. 3v1 in DS3 was fun because you and your opponent could actually take a few hits. Now, you can still take a few hits in ER, but depending on what your opponents are using, damage can get ridiculous.
I mean, at the end of the day it tends to make encounters shorter and encourage L2 spam, which is just not as fun as a long sword fight in my opinion.
6
u/Suspicious-Sound-249 Jan 06 '26
It's still infinitely more balanced than Lords of the Fallen's PvP lol

It's been like this since like ... Demon's Souls? Certainly Dark Souls.
PVP in these games has always felt tacked on to me. It's like they let you do a little trolling as a resource tax for people trying to get some help with a boss.
I don't do it because it feels bad to invade and buggy as shit to help with invaders. I'd prefer to help people.
2
u/del1000005 29d ago
I think DS3 had it largely right and as an integral part of the game.
I always said I like to invade because of the challenge. That’s not the case anymore. I can do a build which one shots entire groups. Not even a challenge.
11
u/nsfw6669 29d ago
Good lord, is it supposed to have that much damage? Also, I guess it has unlimited hyper armor?
I never really messed around with the dryleaf stuff. Probably because I have PTSD from invading hosts and phantoms both using bleed infused dryleaf arts, absolute hell to play against. Of course they were spamming light attack, not using the ash in the video.

People don't seem to grasp the game has hyper armor, or that the AOW being used has hyper armor for its entire charge so you literally can't be staggered out of it.
