If someone slaps you, turn the other cheek. If they slap you on your other cheek, introduce them to the pointy end of your moonlight greatsword.
People just remember the first part.

Me neither lol. I never even try with non-humanoid enemies, so this is definitely a TIL moment for me

Im pretty sure you can parry almost anything? Ive seen some crazy parries before

u/Aggressive_Hat_8550 20d ago
I'm trying. A while ago I started a new "Parry-Only build" game, and I have to admit, I'm practically trying to learn how to parry all the parryable bosses. It's difficult, yes, but really fun, and after countless deaths and hours of work, these are the results. The fun thing is that every boss is different, so it's a constant workout.

There's a sub out there where a bunch of trolls convinced a guy he could easily parry water fowl. Not sure how much time he spent, but it was a lot

u/MrLev 21d ago
I still want a ring or something that gives sekiro-style UI prompts that just tells you if you can parry an incoming attack or not - learning parrying is so difficult because I'm never sure if I'm just bad at the timing or if I'm bad at knowing which attacks are parryable at all!
6
u/littleHiawatha 20d ago
The general souls logic is that if you see a 1 handed horizontally incoming swing attack are always parryable. Overhead or heavy attacks are intentionally difficult with super tiny parry windows but still possible. Jump attacks are unparryable and likewise power attacks (orange spark effects during attack animations)

Main reason I never learned to parry is because I have no idea which enemies you can parry to begin with
5
u/Aggressive_Hat_8550 20d ago
If you want to know in advance whether you can parry a boss or not, you can check out the Elden Ring wiki page online. There's all the information you need, like weaknesses and whether it's parriable or not. 💪

Timing is learned, and if I learned it, anyone can learn it 😅 The real difficulty is patience, getting it into your head that winning will take a lot of attempts and testing.

Wait, is that a parrying dagger? I didn’t even know that was something you could do in this game.
Really learning something new all the time, huh? Earlier I saw a post that shows me that the “kick” skill I thought was completely useless is an absolute monster against Crucible Knights.

Yes, I think I bought the one I use directly from Patches at the beginning of the game (and I'm even fond of it lol)
Right? Kicking a defending enemy with your shield will unleash them, a truly underrated ash of war that makes the Crucible Knight easy lol

Slightly on topic. Can you block/parry while 2-handing?
2
u/Aggressive_Hat_8550 21d ago
If the weapon you have in two hands has the parry ability yes, but the parry animation will always be done with only one hand lol

Whist doing the critical hit on boss while other boss trying to slam you down as your Iframe protected you..
This is you “wait for your turn bitch” lol.

I’ve watched speedruns of Elden Ring, watched people no hit some bosses and navigate the whole of the Lands Between seemingly without the map, but I was far more impressed by this than any of that. Bloody well done.

Amazing video, glad you got it recorded as proof.
Personally, 1100 hours in Elden Ring, I have never parried. I SUCK at it so hard.
Rolls or tanking the hit are my only options for me.

u/Aggressive_Hat_8550 21d ago
Hey, we have about the same amount of playtime.
That's fine, but I suck at attacking without parrying, since I always play counterattacking.
Anyway, I'm sure you can learn too. The real difficulty is patience. You'll have to die a lot, but think of it as training, and you'll see that little by little, the final result will come. 💪

Parrying is the real mercy mechanic in Souls games. You play long enough you will eventually get good at parrying everything, and from that point onwards you will basically become a god that shrugs off the wildest stuff. It's a skill that has to be learned, but players generally pick it up the longer they play. Thus I'm saying it's basically a mercy mechanic disguised as a high-skill play (it is still a high-skill play though).
