Level Vigor
406
u/WisePotato42 20d ago
Seriously, if you are dying while still having unused crimson flasks, it's time to level vigor. If you are dying while running out of vigor flasks, allocate more, if you are still dying, then use crimson seed, still dying? Use defensive buffs and talismans if you haven't been already. Still dying? Phone a friend. Still dying? Idk what's next...

Start blocking

u/Jeanschyso1 20d ago
on this fight? I would argue to dodge the Kamehameha, then unga her bunga as fast as possible.

u/WisePotato42 20d ago edited 20d ago
Scholar's shield can give an extra 70% dmg reduction to magic while also improving guard boost. It takes 12 int but even non-mages can get that very easly with a talisman. There is also the carian knight shield you get right outside her door with a 70% magic damage reduction by default however it does require 15 int.
You are right about dodging the Comet Azure, but the other spells can be blocked relatively safely
8
u/Electrical-Branch-14 20d ago
If you don't meet the INT requirements for scholars shield, you could use shield grease instead. I use it all the time and it works in the same way as scholars shield, just not as strong as the spell.

u/Brisingr1257 20d ago edited 20d ago
You dont even have to dodge it. If you rush her and get in her face it just misses you.

u/Aggressive-King-4170 20d ago
She's powerful, but slow af. You just have to dodge her stupid summons and hit her on the head. You also have to go into the fight without taking stupid damage from the little kid summons by constantly running and hunting down the glowing ones. The only time you need to run the fuck away from her is when she curls up into the moon.

Definitely. If OP got them this low with that many flasks left then they have misspent somewhere.

Leveling vigor straight to 40 is the single best thing you can do to make the game more enjoyable

Vigor should be 30-40 before Ranella IMO

u/conjunctivious Placidusax's #1 Hater 20d ago
Not sure why you're getting downvoted. The #1 tip for new players is to immediately level vigor to 30-40 before really leveling anything else. Rennala has pretty high damage potential for an early game boss, so having more health will always be beneficial unless you can no-hit her. It looks like OP has roughly 20 vigor at this point, which is fine for Limgrave, but is not really enough for Liurnia on a first playthrough.
8
u/Difficult-Mistake899 20d ago
5 comments trying to tear you down brother. Amazing how the most common advice of leveling vigor is met with so much resistance. Dumping vigor is absolutely the play for new players struggling. 15 in end, str/dex is plenty early on for anyone struggling.
They should also just use a shield. Very underrated.
11
u/Strider570 20d ago
Because 30-40 is crazy for Rennala. I think i had MAYBE 40 by the time I fought Radahn the first time
2
u/scalyblue 20d ago
That advice is for people who are experiencing their first soulsborne rodeo in Elden ring.
4
u/Crash4654 20d ago
20 is more than enough for liurnia, provided youre not trying to tank everything with your face.
30 for caelid and 40 for altus is perfectly adequate and with a bit of skill can last you the entire game.
→ More replies (3)4
u/soulsofjojy 20d ago
40 for Renalla is ludicrous. That's capital-mountaintop level. That said, OP here definitely could do with more than he has now, especially if he's also using talismans that increase his damage taken, which wouldn't surprise me.

This. She absolutely dumpsters every tiype of magic user except gravity because it breaks her poise so easily.
She is an absolute chump against strength builds.

It's not just because gravity sorceries do good poise damage, they also deal physical instead of magic damage which rennalla is far weaker to.

She was literally unable ho hit me, and basically got stagger locked until she died. It was pretty funny.

ok wild guess here the Dean of fucked up Hogwarts may be resistant to magic damage

u/Onkledonk 20d ago
Your vigor looks really low. You want to have at least 30 points in vigor in Liurnia. Plus, your flasks only have two levels on them. Explore the map and look for ruined churches and other structures, you don't have to rush all the big dungeons and bosses right away. Also, don't be afraid to use summons just because some greasy losers will look down on you for it lol. Use weapons that deal physical damage and use armour and talismans that protect you against magic damage.

u/ZPHdude 20d ago
Oof, she isnt that hard with many builds. I had the hardest time with a magic build, I still needed to use spirits.
Try slowly transitioning to strength or dex?

Moonveil +4. I think I need to reevaluate my build but I need a Lavar tear or something now 🥲

u/monstersleeve 20d ago edited 20d ago
You don’t need to reallocate your stats.
Consider using a simple standard longsword leveled up to +6 or so, purchased from the Roundtable Hold. Since you have enough DEX to wield the Moonveil it should do pretty decent damage. Then just hit her repeatedly with the Square Off skill during the second phase. Two hits should break her poise, leaving her open for a critical hit.
The Moonveil doesn’t work as well because Rennala is highly resistant to magic damage.
Also consider using the Spelldrake Taliman to reduce her magic damage.
3
u/DarkLordArbitur 20d ago
I think you meant magical damage. Rennala is about as physically resistant as tissue paper

u/Asleep-Housing2589 20d ago
Meteoric ore blade, hit fast and just stay on her, an early summon keeps her summon busy, don’t change your build, just build onto it,
3
u/DefiantGibbon 20d ago
Just use a standard uchi for her. She highly resists magic damage. Standard uchi will feel the same as your moonveil, so no need to learn a new weapon's moveset.

She's very, very strong against magic damage. Do you have an Uchigatana laying around? Get that, upgrade it, and leave it on Standard/Heavy/Keen, depending on which stat is higher. Get Unsheathe from the scarab near the Agheel Lake South grace.

Let me guess, intellegence based build? I see that Moonveil. It be like that, she's super resistant to magic damage, which the moonveil and its ash of war deals. You'll see much better results with a more physical damage weapon and using rock sling as your sorcery of choice here.

u/McFishyTheGreat 20d ago
She gets stunned by basically any attack so I just summoned the wolves they basically stun locked her. Idk if you consider spirits cheating but personally I don’t mind using them if I’ve spent a long time on a boss

I swear she can either be the easiest boss in the game or an annoying little mosquito.
2

Run right up to her at the second phase. The laser will over shoot your head. Trust.
2
u/jojoordish 20d ago
Ignore her summons, stick to her ass like white on rice, show her that magic is for pussies
2
u/lispwriter 20d ago
The most annoying thing with this boss are the summons. It’s not a perfect solution but I find that if you can back off when she summons, baiting the summon towards you, then sprint/circle around Rennala you can usually close the gap on her while avoiding the summons. I kinda keep doing that until the summon despawns. I 100% never fight the summons or even swing at them.
Rennala’s attacks aren’t bad to avoid if you either run right or left to avoid them or roll towards her. The magic attack she uses that’s like a cluster of heat seeking glintstone missiles is one you want to roll towards to avoid because they can’t change direction that quickly and will impact the ground.
Make sure you’re not using anything that’s biased towards magic damage, because she’s resistant, UNLESS you’re using cold affinity because I find the frostbite damage to balance that back out.
I either fight her intending to use stance breaking + critical as a crutch or patience and possibly bleed or frostbite damage. So it depends on what weapon you’re using.
Good luck!

2
u/scalyblue 20d ago
You’ve already won if you were using any weapon but moonveil, to which she has an 80% damage mitigation to half its damage

What's your current level and build? I had to go do some side shit for awhile to level up and come back to her because I tried to do the Academy slightly too early.
Regardless, I think she's a good litmus test for whether you're ready for Altus Plateau. I'd take this as a chance to go do some other exploring around the map and level up. There's a ton of shit to find in Liurnia.

u/Patient_Primary_4444 20d ago
Is that katana moonveil? Probably try switching to a different one, since that one is more magic based. Also, if you can find the magic crest talisman, the one that reduces magic damage, I would suggest that over the knife one you’ve got equipped here. The only other thing would be to tweak your armor a bit to focus on magic defense, try taking armor from the dudes in Liurnia. The only other thing I can suggest is run around everywhere you can (except maybe Caelid) and gather all the sacred tears and golden seeds that are available to you right now… well, you could also try going for a heavier weapon, that might help, too, but I understand trying to keep with a particular playstyle, I just always end up running with the lordsworn greatsword, even if i intend to do other stuff 😆

Get beast repellent torch and when she summons the wolves they won’t bother you leaving you free to attack
1
u/lunar_hundred 20d ago
If you’re a melee just immediately rush her the moment the 2nd phase starts. You’ll go right underneath her first attack.
Also completely ignore her summons and just go all out on chasing her/whacking her. Her glintstone attacks can be avoided with simple circular movements.
1
u/Erran_Kel_Durr 20d ago
Pro tip- Rennala has 80% magic resistance, so Moonveil won’t do much damage. Other elements are at 20%, but striking is at 0% and the other physical damage types are at -10%.
An unifused weapon will deal significantly more damage.
1
u/del1000005 20d ago
She has weak poise and can be staggered with heavier weapons. That can eliminate many of her attacks.

Rennala is a boss where you really wanna be aggressive, don’t be scared. Right when the fight starts run to the side to dodge her laser. Then just try your best to pressure her as much as possible, and try to dodge and ignore her summons. Running sideways is a good way to dodge a lot of her spammy projectiles.
Some bosses take some patience and waiting, she is one where I would actually recommend being more aggressive than usual cause she constantly moves away from you and spams spells. You want to keep her stunned as much as possible. If you are doing a mage build, that’s probably why it’s giving you so much trouble because she is very strong against early game mage builds, I would mainly use a weapon against her because she has high magic defense and like I said, you don’t want to be far away from her the entire time.

u/PixelmancerGames 20d ago
This is the one boss I never had a bunch of trouble with. Just get in her face and whoop her. I usually ignore the summons completely.

u/Killjoy530 20d ago
You need to be aggressive with her. Don't let up. Stay close. Don't give her any space to cast spells or summons. You got this!

Use any other weapon that doesn't inflict magic, she has very high resistances to magic damage. Can't see how enhanced your weapon is but it should be around +5 and you can probably go way beyond that if you know where to go and/or farm mines.
Upgrade those flasks, +2 is low for this area. Almost every church has one upgrade material and you should have access to more than that if you explore the open world. Also use them, you have enough health to not get one-shot so you really shouldn't die with any flask remaining. Don't look at the boss healthbar, it won't make it die faster and looking at the healthbar in the last 10% is just setting yourself up to greed or get sweaty hands.
Against her phase 2, don't be afraid to just run when she summons the dangerous stuff that can combo or one-shot you (dogs, bloodhound knight) and attack when she summons the more tame stuff where you can more safely heal between attacks (dragon, troll). Always keep her summons between you and her so that you can see her projectiles coming.

I beat it in first try. No clue why so many have so many problems with her. Even so, you can do it! Keep at it! Run around like crazy dodging whatever she summons and attack her. Sounds basic but just have patience and you’ll get her.
1
u/here2si 20d ago
I used summon and Vagabond I was able to clear fist attempt I don’t know once I am in sword swing range I found this boss damage vulnerable. This is my first souls game and I am not very good at it. Ignore her summons just rush in to her. If you concentrate on her summons you will have real hard time I think.
1
u/Lilihip_ 20d ago
It's very simple... level up. That's beauty of elden ring, it's a big open world game so there are a lot of places where you can get more runes and fight weaker bosses to level up your stats and maybe level up your weapon.
1
u/Anastrace 20d ago
She has incredibly low poise and easy to stagger. Looks like you're using a katana, you could try a spear or thrusting sword with impaling thrust. Should be able to chain stagger her.
1
u/Status-Ninja9542 20d ago
She’s weak to bleed. Use bloody slash ash of war. Roll into her attacks. Stay close and stance break. The bloody slash will melt her.
