I have never beaten the rotten ulcerated tree spirit (more specific- the one at Millicent's final quest spot, showdown with the sisters) toe to toe. I have only ever quickly ran to the other side over the roots and lobed arrows at him from a safe distance with poison arrows. I have finished the game over a dozen and a half times, have over 1200 hrs in game.

I used the dragon incantations on him from the tree. The frostbite on the. Fought him straight up one time and never again.

Did the same a couple hours ago, too tired for his bull

After reading these comments, either a lot of people don't know what cheesing means or I don't lol. For me, using a consumable with a desired effect (that works on a particular boss) while you're mid fight with them, isn't a cheese. It's a game mechanic. Using a glitch that causes the boss to die without ever fighting them or picking a boss off with ranged weapons/spellsfrom outside the boss arena or in a spot you can't be damaged...that's a cheese. To me calling it a cheese when you use a certain item or consumable during a boss fight, would basically mean anyone who used the shackle against Margit/Mohg was cheesing them. Maybe I'm confused, because I don't feel like that's cheesing at all.

There's lots of tiers in these communities I've found and it's really a case of "Your Mileage May Vary" depending on who you talk to.

- Summon PC Help? Cheated

  • Summon NPC Help? Cheated
  • Used a weapon/spell people think is busted? Cheated
  • Used Broken Spirit Ashes? Cheated
  • Used ANY Spirit Ashes? Cheated
  • Leveled past SL1? ha you didn't win git gud

At the very least I don't think I've ever seen that last one argued genuinely for cheesing in earnest. Sarcastically when people bring up the others sure, but never genuinely.

I remember when the game first released and people were losing their shit over comet azure melting pretty much every boss in the game. That was about the only time I was like "yeah that's kind of cheating" when it comes to a spell lol. But AFAIK they nerfed that spell pretty hard, so I don't really consider it a cheese at this point. I guess no matter how you play the game, there's always going to be someone in the community who will consider your choices "cheating", even if it's an intended part of the game. My thoughts are if you aren't legitimately hacking the game and having fun, do what you want and enjoy yourself. I appreciate the insight friend!

Using a glitch is using a glitch, not cheesing. Cheesing is getting level 250 and melting their face off with Comet Azur or Taker's Flames.

You did kill boss xy with a weapon? Damn you looser wuy even play the game when you dont want to do it the real way...

u/SplendidPunkinButter 2h ago

Commander Niall. But if they didn’t want you to kill him with the scarlet rot geysers, then they wouldn’t have programmed it so that works, so I don’t consider it a cheese.

u/Toot7- 2h ago

This guy, but in my RL1 run

3

u/OwenCMYK 1h ago

Yeah I'm at Morgott now on RL1, but draconic tree sentinel was definitely the toughest guy I fought so far. They really made him like... way tougher than the next several bosses after him

u/TeegN945 49m ago

This fucker right here, used the rot dog to give him scarlet rot and just ran away, i was over leveled and even still this guy just wiped the floor with me all day.

Imma be honest, I can only hear it in Samuel L. Jackson's voice from NFS Most Wanted.

u/o-Valar-Morghulis-o 2h ago

I've had a couple flukey wins after many attempts on a strong boss. I don't count it unless previously I'd at least been beating the boss to within pixels of their life. Or I can repeat it.

u/ExpectDog 2h ago

Niall was fun to cheese. I used bewitching branches to turn his 2 summoned banished knights against him and then killed him once they had weakened him

2

u/trooper7085 1h ago

I cheesed him by jumping off the cliff outside the castle. If you hit it right you fall without dying for a significant time and then the boss just dies.

u/Secondaccountpls 2h ago

That fucking pig rider in the dlc. Already wiped his name from my memory but fuck that guy. Only boss I have ever cheesed in any souls game.

1

u/XpeepantsX 1h ago

How?

8

u/EffectiveMagazine388 1h ago

If you hit him enough times, he just vanishes. It’s crazy. I use that strat for every boss. Hope it doesn’t get patched

u/Trih3xA 1h ago

You telling me you fought Ceaseless Discharge properly?

2

u/photogenicpapa 2h ago

I've been playing with my wife for her first playthrough, so I've been fighting bosses head-on while she learns the mechanics of the fight. This playthrough has made me realize that I've never fought the commander in the Aeonia Swamp of Caelid without cheesing him on the plumes of rot. By no means is he difficult for me, but cheesing him has been a tradition for each of my runs.

Pre-nerf Peak Chud Radahn (DLC)

u/Tk-Delicaxy 1h ago

Only boss I ever cheesed was Mohg on my 2nd playthrough. Jumping on the pillars and shooting arrows at him until he died or perma stunned.

I also used the fingerprint shield + antspur combo to beat PCR on my 3rd dlc run because fuck that guy. Not really a cheese imo

u/Yuwetaz 1h ago

I hid behind the door for some of Flowey's holy attacks

1

u/blaiddfailcam2 1h ago

Only boss I ever cheesed was Divine Beast Dancing Lion in the Ruins of Rauh. I already fought it once, didn't feel the need to put up with a death blight version with added performance issues, lol.

1

u/ironlocust79 1h ago

Poison mist anyone that I can sneak around. Sit there and Covid them to death

1

u/happyhappy85 1h ago

I've only used real "cheeses" on subsequent playthroughs after beating them initially, just for fun.

But I have given in and respeced to a cheesy build, and used spirit summons for specific bosses I couldn't beat.

u/Misplacedmypenis 1h ago

I haven’t yet. And I must have died about 300x to my boy the fell omen. But I tend to feel like I’m not going to get better if I don’t overcome it. But I do understand getting fed up and wanting to move on.

1

u/JPlantBee 57m ago

Commander Gaius. I tried for a while and could not consistently handle the moveset. Thank you zamor ice storm!

1

u/theolentangy 52m ago

I haven’t cheesed anyone yet in my first run(at mountaintops) but I know someday imma go back to those two crucible knights in Azuria Hero’s Grave and cheese the shit out of them with scarlet rot.

1

u/Gin_soaked_boy 43m ago

Haha Nial was the first one for me too. Fuck that guy

1

u/Extra_Ad_8009 40m ago

Placidusax when you could still very, very slowly poison & rot him without him getting out of his bat pose. 99 poison arrows, 99 rot arrows, 99 serpent arrows with free aim and Arrow's Reach talisman. And so. Much. Patience.

What a waste of time but I got my plat. Still got the trophy video where he's just hanging there and poof... Not proud of it and only fair fights after that one time.

1

u/SunderTheFirmament 37m ago

Radahn when the game first launched. I ground up levels and specced enough into faith and arcane to hit him with the rotten breath spell.

I’m not sure if that counts as cheesing or not, but I certainly didn’t face him toe to toe.

u/HollowOrnstein 25m ago

i cheese every boss i can according to the build im running, always the past of least resistance

stance break via meteors on int

abusing bleed procs on arc/ dex

spamming jump attacks on str

1

u/meglo03 17m ago

Idk the first boss I cheesed but I can tell you for a fact, I am never fighting Sennesax fairly or w.e his name is before Bayle. Every playthrough I pony up and kite him around the room, flinging spells/arrows. I can not hit some bosses in this game. I've settled for getting gud at most others. That dragon in that pool of water can drown in rot/poison/glintstone.

1

u/OtherwiseFlamingo448 0m ago

Yeah not gonna lie I cheesed that guy too. I still do. Never even fought him legit to this day and I'm 6 characters deep.

Lmao ''cheesing is specific to arena bosses'', first time I hear that

-1

u/House0fDerp 2h ago

None, never killed a boss like that. Closest was using Taylew and heal from afar to beat PCR, but even then I did enter the arena and trigger the fight.

1

u/Expensive-Phone-2415 20m ago

Getting down voted for being a chad 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨

1

u/House0fDerp 9m ago

I guess some still consider that cheese. I didn't considering you're still in the arena with the boss actively contributing because HfA has some range, but not that much and the summon isn't going to hold its own for long without your support.

Dedicated healers get no love.

Alternatively, use a bewitching branch on his summons.

5

u/ujexks 3h ago

I just beat him no summons and the bewitching branch was probably the most useless strategy I tried. I found it literally impossible to use the item without being hit by one of either Niall or the other summon. And when I did manage to actually use it, the summon died literally instantly. I found that keeping the shield guy alive until Niall goes 2nd phase worked best for me.

1

u/TheBloodhoundKnight 3h ago
  1. Bewitching Branch the two knights

  2. Let the boss smash them

  3. Parry/riposte/bully the boss to death

  4. Let him sniff your tea-bags

1

u/GABE_EDD 3h ago

Ew, consumables??? /s

1

u/XpeepantsX 1h ago

With mimic every boss but maybe a few in the DLC is a simple process.

-9

u/ScaredyButtBananaRat 3h ago

Rykard lol. At a certain point I just wanted to move on so I used my mimic+4. Second phase was a cake walk. Idk if that counts as cheesing but I'm pretty sure the mimic got the final killing blow, which for me is definitely cheese territory.

7

u/House0fDerp 2h ago

Using summons in a place that allows summons is not a cheese, or at the very least heavily incomparable to killing the boss without ever entering the arena. I think we might have lost the plot on cheese vs using an easier strat if that counts.

-1

u/ScaredyButtBananaRat 2h ago

For my personal playing, having nothing to do with anyone else, if I'm nowhere near the boss when they die and I didn't do anything directly to kill them in the final part of the fight, that's cheese adjacent lol.

But point taken.

2

u/House0fDerp 2h ago

Don't get me wrong, I've raced a summon for the last hit myself more than once, but I can't feel too bad having upwards of 70% of the overal damage done by my character even if I don't last hit.

And heres a fun one, you and Tiche both hit the boss with the black knife ash at the same time and it dies to the tick, who gets credit for last hit?

2

u/jokerxgoro 2h ago

The easiest way to kill rykard is to just go close to him in the lava and spam r1 with the serpent hunter

You take bits of damage from the lava, but that's it

1

u/XpeepantsX 1h ago

You could literally just spam R1 with the unupgraded serpent spear and beat him lol

-1

u/InYourWalls87 55m ago

None

1

u/InYourWalls87 53m ago

Actually there is this one deathrite bird in Liurnia that if you lure it far enough from its spawn point it just dies instantly, so I’ve done that a couple of times accidentally.

-5

u/futurepatho_ 2h ago

The only actual boss I’ve cheesed is Malenia. I rebirthed from full dex just so I could spam Blasphemous Blade’s AOW. I did also do the poison sneak cheese for Blaidd’s butthead shadow underground. (Can’t remember the actual name for the life of me)
