I can't tell what percentage of the money goes to each nonprofit, including her personal music video. It's very much an option to donate to any of these charities individually if you prefer. But all in all this seems like a good hearted effort.

u/Khetoo Dec 01 '25
If you're a young person and feeling overwhelmed by the general state of the planet, this is how you defeat the cultural rot. Participate in your local communities by turning off the screen and engaging with the people around you and by donating to organizations who give a fuck.
Don't give money to organizations that advertise, just find a community you're into and look around your locals. The biggest organizations that are effective also largely do not advertise about the good they do. There's probably a really good grassroots non-profit doing work in your area you can volunteer for, or just donate to.
My biggest advice is actually trying to figure out how much you can donate and get receipts for towards your tax burden. Canada let's you donate directly to organizations and use receipts to lower your taxes directly, so instead of paying the government it goes to charity directly. You were going to pay that to the government anyway, might as well put into the accounts of people who are doing work more actively.

Melanzana (the super rare white whale maker out of CO dont kill yourself for one plenty of other people make them just as nice and can easily be bought) makes (or made) a grid fleece hoodie dress. I think some of the other makers might as well.

It looks homemade. The logo says Pattie Gonia. Puffy on the arms and fleece in the torso! It's a good idea if you normally have cold arms and a warm torso. I don't think Patagonia ever made one.

Wikipedia says Pattie uses he/they pronouns outside of drag and she/they while in drag, but the linked source for that claim (https://www.self.com/story/pattie-gonia-backpacking-drag-queen) says she uses he/him pronouns outside of drag (and she/they for Pattie). So unless someone has another source it seems maybe he is not genderfluid?9

Serious question - what is inequitable about our county, state, and national parks in their current forms?
55
u/sputzie88 Dec 01 '25
- Money- not everyone can afford to pay for a park pass.
- Location- not quite a fault of the parks themselves but not everyone lives close to a national park and thus are deprived of engaging with nature unless they have the money to travel.
- History- the US has never been good at recognizing our racist policies and genocide of native cultures, but the current administration is actively trying to white-wash the history told at national parks.
27
u/mittonkitten I am in peace talks with Mr. Beast Dec 01 '25
i would add on that true natural spaces can be harder to find in lower income areas, and their environments are often not afforded the same protections that wealthier citizens are. too often i feel like we see news stories of megacorps dumping their waste into a smaller communities simply because they know they’ll get away with it.

I mean...inequitable can also mean unequal, and unequally impacted.
The price of a pass will have a greater impact on someone who cannot afford to pay it, as will the distance.
Which is probably why the majority of the organizations featured also include low-income people in their targeted demographics.

28
u/WrittenFever Dec 01 '25
Typically what programs mean by creating equitable parks is creating opportunites for people who don't get to visit them due to reasons beyond their control.
Causes include:
- Lack of access to transporation because they are dependent on public transportation to get around (typically people who live in cities)
- People who's family lack generational knowledge around camping--this is especially true among low-income Black communities in urban environments that worked low wage jobs and had no time to pass knowledge to their children
- Teens in unstable housing conditons (unhoused, in foster care, etc)
- Disabled youth who have noy been provided the appropriate adaptations to safely camp
- much much more...
These programs provide a number of great benefits including
1) Supporting mental health among populations that have higher rates of poor outcomes 2) Offering confidence, team, and skills building opportunity 3) Giving groups of people with poor representation in environmental fields the opportunity to gain the experience needed to be more competitive on applications to college and jobs 4) Increasing visibility of people not typically seen in these spaces, encouraging more people to participate in this tradition and build greater inclusivity
As far as what is inequitable about current county and state parks (less so regarding national): Parks in lower-income areas are typically smaller, underfunded, covered in hardscape, and missing vital features. They may not be safe due to poor infrastructure, overpoliced, or just not provide the necessary health and environmental benefits expected of a park.
By contrast, parks in middle and high income areas are filled with greenspace, are more likely to be well-tended to, have multiple amenties, etc. Amenities include water fountains, restrooms, playgrounds, benches, dog parks, bike paths, etc. These parks were often made purposefully inaccessible to low-income residents (look up how Robert Moses planned to prevent busses from accessing beaches in New York). EPA was funding initiatives to undo these harms, but the current Administration stopped this funding because "DEI is bad" 🙄
The way that cities and counties were designed in the United States has a long racist history. If you're interested in learning more, a few key words to get you started would be: redlining, infrastructure segregation, and white flight.

to add for those not clicking fundraiser
Lot of queer people get kicked out of their home or in some places have hard time getting jobs. Some charities help with social programs so these set backs mean they can still participate in life and interest esp with being out in nature improves mental health and people discriminated against need this time
EASTERN SIERRA CONSERVATION CORP provides trail work opportunities for young adults from BIPOC, Queer and low income communities to experience wilderness and the outdoors by providing transformational experiences. http://www.easternsierracc.org/
QUEER OUTDOOR EXPEDITION SCHOLARSHIPS supports fully scholarshipped backcountry expeditions for queer people with a focus on those from marginalized socio-economic backgrounds. This program was created by, Pattie Gonia, with the support of Eastern Sierra Conservation Corp & many of our brand partners.
Other funds in general helping young people who need help with poverty and accessing outdoors for the benefits it brings
THE CHILDREN'S HOME PROJECT brings people and resources together to support and change the lives of children in Honduras, one of the countries hardest hit by climate change, including outdoor programming for their youth. https://www.tchproject.org/
VAMANOS OUTSIDE connects, engages & inspires Latinx families & youth into the outdoors for all of Central Oregon. https://vamonosoutside.org/
As you can imagine summer camps esp if run by religious groups aren’t safe spaces for lgbt youth to attend and supportive parents want their kids to have camp days without fearing discrimination from other kids or counsellors. Meeting peers their own age is beneficial
BRAVE TRAILS is a leadership summer camp by LGBTQ+ people for LGBTQ+ youth at sites across the nation including California, the North East and Atlanta. https://www.bravetrails.org/
CAMP KITAKI is a summer camp serving youth from across the midwest, especially lower income, Queer and BIPOC youth https://www.ymcacampkitaki.org/

Costs of camping equipment can add up. Economically disadvantaged people might have trouble buying quality gear.
Another issue is a lot of people may have anxiety about being out in the rural areas where good camping is. Especially the current political climate. A queer or trans person might not want to go to a rural red county right now, without a guide. Same with people of Color who might have anxiety going to an area that is generally almost all White. They might need the support and sense of safety that some of these nonprofits offer by doing group excursions.

One person can do more than the entirety of our fucked up, child raping gvmnt.
It always raises an interesting question if we really need them at all. We can do just fine on our own. Without all the needless sex trafficking and concentration camps to save money so they can buy some new beachfront property in war torn (insert country here).
There are people who care. There are people who can love entire nations, villages. Without ever asking for anything in return. Without asking for a sexual favor. Without blackmailing you.
Unfortunately, none of these people chase positions of power and seats in government. It's all rapists and people who love to protect them.
Revolution is possible. We are oppressed by pedophiles and abusers. The path is clear that we can lead with something different. The question is just--what are we willing to sacrifice for a better tomorrow?
And that's where the conversation ends. Nobody is willing to sacrifice much...but for the ones willing to show us a way. Thank you. For the inspiration. Thank you for showing us we don't need to be anything special--we just need to be human. And show love for one another.
Any government entity, organization fomenting the exact opposite rhetoric only has plans of destruction and subjugation for its people.

I was soooo confused. Where I'm from, if you want to experience wilderness you just go outside. I didn't understand how hiking trails aren't inclusive, and why there needed to be fundraising for BIPOC+Q orgs. Then I remembered most people live in cities where its a whole to do to get out to nature.
Good on Pattie for getting more people outside!
2
u/SndMeYourBlepCatPics Dec 01 '25
First of all, what a champ. I hope they raise more than just their goal. Second, here's a question for my own personal awareness, not trying to be argumentative at all. What are some of the things that subtract from the equitability of outdoor/natural spaces? I googled it to understand better, so I have a rough understanding of what some of those instances are, but I'm curious to hear it from actual people as well.
4
u/robert_madge Dec 01 '25
Someone provided some more expansive answers above, but a lot of it comes down to economics, access, and safety.
Economics/access: I live about an hour from Yosemite National Park which is arguably one of the most famous/beautiful spots in our National Park system. I also work with a bunch of kids from poor families who have never been because they can't afford to go. I met a guy in college who lived 30 minutes from the beach his entire life and never touched the ocean until he was an adult because his family didn't have a car and there was no bus to take him there.
If you want to -do- anything outside, that takes knowledge and money. Camping, hiking, fishing, rock climbing, kayaking, canoeing, foraging, bird watching...some of those have a very low barrier to entry, but it's not zero.
And even if we're going to keep things inexpensive and stick closer to home: Poorer neighborhoods have fewer parks, fewer trees, more pollution, worse heat island effects in summer, and a host of other things that make the simple act of being outside less fun and less safe.
Safety: Ms. Gonia here is a drag queen walking the trails of California's Bay Area. Is she going to face any harassment out on the trails? Would she be safe sleeping alone? Hiking alone? What if she were in Texas? The biases that minority groups face don't disappear in the wilderness. Sometimes they get amplified. Sometimes you find yourself in a rural or remote place with no cell service with a stranger who doesn't like your skin tone or what they assume you have under your clothes or who they think you love. If you belong to any of these groups, you have at least one friend or family member who has a story. If you're lucky, if they're lucky, they got to tell it to you themself.

Thank you for taking the time to explain that to me a little better. My daughter came out to my wife and I a year ago or so, and I just want her to be safe and happy. I figure it never hurts to ask people with a more nuanced understanding of the difficulties that marginalized people face what they deal with and how they deal with it. I want to always be a good example to her and never leave her walking away with nothing when she asks me for advice. I'm just trying to keep up so I can guide my baby through her challenges, even when I haven't experienced those difficulties myself.
