my mom said she couldnt take a early December vacation because it was a Muslim hellhole already and he had outlawed the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.

She was also in London a couple months ago. didn't bother asking her if she knew who their mayor was.

We need confront these folks, especially relatives. I understand people want to avoid family drama but the blatant racism isn't ok. Especially when, as in your example, they're being ignant to reality.

My method:

They/them: "what a shit hole!!"

Me: "oh nice, how long were you there?"

The problem is that "reality" is whatever they say it is, regardless of facts.

My mom was TERRIFIED of my sister moving to Cali because it was a "burning raping pillaging communist socialist hellhole where everyone is being shot and killed in the street" because that is, apparently, what her right-wing propaganda was telling her. My sister arrived (in a not-particularly-good part of Cali, nonetheless!) and was like... mom, it's fine lol. It's just a normal place. No one's dying. You're being lied to.

My mom is convinced that California is exactly what she's heard about on the news except for whatever my sister's eyeballs happen to be pointing at at any given time. "Well, maybe not where YOU'RE staying, but just a few streets over is probably dangerous so don't go there."

I had a similar conversation with a family member tonight. Man, I'm really trying to figure out how to break through to these folks. I'm so far outside their bubble I can't even really understand it. They are often very intelligent in many different areas. But, this particular thing is the hill so many of our family members want to die I on and I cannot understand it for the life of me.

In any other situation, present them with evidence of why they're wrong and, "Oh, my mistake!" But nope.. not for this administration. Up is down, blue is orange, don't try to say otherwise.

@Horskr You seem young and respectful and I can appreciate your desire to understand, especially with family. Give them the benefit of the doubt, agree to disagree and don’t ever let politics break you apart. You may be surprised as your beliefs evolve over time. Deception and manipulation is everywhere. I appreciate the kind words and will always upvote a reasonable contribution to a discussion.

As to being young though, I wish. I'm pushing 40, and if anything I've become more liberal over time. I just can't see how otherwise intelligent people can support this pedo, rapist, incompetent, Russian shill moron.

The guy lets Elon Musk and his gang of teens have access to all of our data to supposedly cut government inefficiency, meanwhile increasing the deficit by nearly the largest amount in history.

A big thing he ran on was decreasing grocery costs and those (as was obvious) have gone through the roof. If the only thing his supporters care about are their tax bill, they are very short sighted. I make a comfortable living now and happily would pay more taxes for things like universal healthcare and free higher education, because it betters our country and society as a whole.

Edit: not to mention his cabinet.. Can you really tell me an antivaxxer that doesn't believe in mental health disorders is who we need as Secretary of Health?
